It is governed by a constitution adopted in January 1998. The Holding Trustees of the Society are: The Charity Commission The management of the Society is vested in a Management Committee (Management Trustees) comprising: President Roger Allen Vice President Jean Lenton Honorary Chairman Paul Hibbert Honorary Secretary Paul Sim Honorary Treasurer Andy Fox Theatre Manager Ann Masters Publicity Officer Gary Smith Bar Manager Paul Sim **COMMITTEE MEMBERS** Members Secretary Edith Bocock Theatre Technician Roger Allen Newsletter Judith Fox Assistant Theatre Manager Shirley Williams The Committee and officers retire annually at the Annual General Meeting but shall be eligible for re-election ## **OBJECTS, ORGANISATIONS AND ACTIVITIES** The objects of the Society are to educate the public in the dramatic and operatic arts and generally to develop public appreciation and taste for these areas. The charity is administered by a Management Committee, consisting of elected officers and six other members of the Society. Activities include the production of theatrical productions, the hiring out of the theatre and of the Society’s wardrobe. Page 1 ## **NEWQUAY DRAMATIC SOCIETY** ## **ANNUAL REPORT continued** ## **REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS** Firstly, I must affirm that each one of us is a volunteer and the role of the volunteer must never be underestimated. So, I thank you all for the giving of your time, commitment and skills, all of which contribute to the smooth running of the Society, the Theatre and our online and digital platforms. Our management committee team has always been proactive and forward thinking. Our team of 2023 bringing everything together was:- Edith Bocock, Andy Fox, Judith Fox, Ann Masters, Paul Sim, Gary Smith and Shirley Williams and also our President Roger Allen, who attends our monthly meetings. I thank you all for everything that you do. Lane Theatre continues to undergo refreshment always looking to boost our profile both on and off stage. We have a very wide reach. Together with productions by our very own Newquay Dramatic Society and by Newquay Stage Company, we also continue to attract high quality tribute acts, drag acts, plays by external groups, many other performing genres and the Quarry Gospel Church. It is our responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 43(7) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to our attention. ## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s report** Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the financial statements. ## **Independent Examiner’s Statement** In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act; and  to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; or to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached. Many professional venues would be envious of our success which is in no small way due to a dedicated band of volunteers to whom we owe our thanks. Lane Theatre has, very much, become an attractive venue for visiting acts who have frequently played to sold out houses. Obviously, we are getting something right as far as the people of Newquay are concerned and ‘bums on seats’ are what matters to every theatre. Not only financially but the public recognition of the value we bring to the resort. Last Summer the venue was hired to host ‘Swing’, ‘Take A Chance On Us’ (ABBA Tribute) and Guitar Legends. The later two will be returning next year for a 6 week run in high season. Recognition also for our ‘in house’ productions with ‘ART’ receiving the Cornwall Drama Association award for ‘Best Play’ and it’s director, Stuart Ellison, ‘Best Director’. The powerful ‘Thrill of Love’ won ‘Best Set’ and ‘Calendar Girls the Musical’ was awarded for ‘Fine Ensemble Playing’. Well done and thank you to all involved. Apart from the ever popular tribute acts, ‘proper’ theatre has featured and, in particular, I would thank Liz Graham who brought us ‘Agatha Christie’ and Mark Farrelly with his wonderful portrayal of Quentin Crisp in ‘Naked Hope’. Mark stayed behind after the performance to meet with his audience and discuss the play (written by him). He was delighted by the reception of his work which has subsequently been recognised with an award by London theatres. Both are returning in 2024. CAMP Theatre with ‘Heroes’ was a charming and delightful evening. We are, also, delighted to have welcomed back our good friends Newquay Stage Company. My major concern is that the future of our theatre is dependent upon a small group of people who are not getting any younger. More members must get actively involved especially with Committee and FOH duties. You expect the theatre to be there when you wish to perform on stage but that can only happen if there are sufficient people beavering away behind the scenes It is important, also, that new ideas are forthcoming to keep the venue relevant.
