Trustees Report 2020/2021

You are all aware that the Museum closed for the full year and therefore income was extremely limited. We were fortunate (or may be unfortunate in the timing) that our application for the Co-operative Community Fund was accepted. I say unfortunately because of course the impact of the number of customers shopping in person during the pandemic was extremely limited and therefore our award was small in comparison to other years. Let us hope the next 6 months sees an increase.

There was little chance of opening during the year, and this qualified us for a Government Business Interruption Grant via Teignbridge District Council. We made the application and were not sure how much we would receive but as it was based on the Rateable Value of the building, we were awarded £25,000. which as Sylvia will show in the accounts was a godsend. Obviously, we still had to cover the rent, insurance, utilities, servicing of the boiler, alarm and fire services as well as paying the Electrical Survey.

During the next few months, we are going to need a big push on attracting new stewards, as none of us are getting any younger, some 12 stewards have now decided to stand down for various reasons and although we will cope this year on the limited opening hours, we will have a shortage if we are back to normal next year. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

For this year we intend to open to the public on the 21 July from Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 3pm until the 4 September this will cover what is usually our busiest time with school holidays etc. Obviously, we must be Covid secure, so we have the extra expense of the numerous precautions. On this note I would like to say thank you to Victor Beard for the Screen in the steward’s office – Victor has made and installed this for us.

I also want to say a big thank you to our Vice Chairman Andrew Wright who attended the Museum weekly for the whole of lockdown checking on security and allowing the various services to be carried out and keeping it clean.

Thank you also to everyone involved since May in making the Museum as Covid secure as possible and getting ready to open. Let us hope that the visitors come along, and we would ask you to promote it as much as you can as not having a Tourist Information Centre any longer, word of mouth will help enormously.

Just looking forward to next year, we will continue with the Dawlish Warren display and we hope to celebrate the Queens Platinum Anniversary together with a Tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh. Thank you
