After the death of the Suryivor of the Settlors on 24 June 1994, the Trustees have power to pay or apply the
capital and income of the Trust Fund to such charities OT for such charitable purp05e5 and in suclL proportions in
such manneT and subject to such teTms and conditions as they may at their unconttolled discretion having regard
to 8ny directions given or wishes expressed by the Settlors tts the Trustees.
Fundratsing disclosures
Investment Management C05ts
The Trust's investment portfolio 15 managed by th¢ investment manager - Rathbone5, who acquired Spiers &
Jeffrey in July 2019. Following the iniegraiion of Spier5 & Jeffrey into Rathbones, client fees were incieased.
The fees are now a flat fee, based on the ¥&lue of the fund rather than a combination of lower management fees
but also transaction costs. The Trustees discussed this fee increase at that time, comparing the fee5 Wlth other
brokers. The trustees agreed that th¢ b¢nefit of continuity was more s]nportant and agreed to the fee incT¢a5¢.
Public bEfteJli
Th¢ Trustees consider that all grants are Tnade for the public benefit and are aware of the guidance in that
respect published by the Charity Cornmission for England and Wales.
The Trustees confirni that they have complied with the requirements of section 4 of the Charities Act 2011 to
have due regard io thc publi¢ benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wale5.
Grant makingpollcles
The TNsi established its grant ]naking policy to achieve its objectives by 5UPPOrting various smill to
medium sized charities.
The Trustee5 regret tltst due to the large n￿llber of unsolicited applications for grants received each week they
are not able to notify those which are unsuccessfill.

The Misses Barrie Charitable Trust is a registered charity, number 279459, governed by a Dec12ration of
Charitsble Trusts dated 18 Decernber 1979 by the late Miss Sheila Coupar Barrie and the late Miss Moira
Mo￿lSOn Barrie.
New Trustees are appointed by the existing Trustees. The Trust Deed does not PTovide for any minimwn or
Maximum number of Trustees or for any fixed terni for which they may act.
At the Trl￿tees, meetings, nornially held twice a year, the Trustees agree the broad strategy and areas of activity
for the Trust, including consideration of grant tikklng, investment. reserves and risk management poli¢ies and
perfomjance. The day to day administration of wts arAd the processing and handling of applications prior to
consideration by the TNstees 15 delegated to the Administration Office. Save Ès nentioned below all Tn￿teeS
give of their time freely and no Trustee remuneration was paid in tbe year. Detai15 of related paty transactions
and Trustees expenses are disclosed in Note 13 to the accounts.
John Carter, one of the Trustees, is a partner of Ra￿ll0nd Carter & Co, the Administrators of the Trnst. A fee is
charged for thcse services and is agreed annually by the other Tn￿tee$.
FitEancial instruments
Objeclives andpolicies
The charity's activities expose it to a number of financial risks including credit risl cash flow risk aDd liquidity
risk. The use of fil￿ntial d¢Tivatives is governed by the charity'5 policies approved by the board of trust¢es,
which provide written principles on the use of fu]ancial derivatives to tnanage these risks. The charity does not
use derivative financial instrLments for speculative purposes.

We have audited the f￿ancial staternent5 of The Mi55es Barri¢ Ch2riiable Trust for the year ended 5 April 2023,
which compris¢ the Statement of Financial Activities, Balance Sheet and the related notes. The f￿anCial
reporting fram¢work that has been applied in their preparation is applicable law and Financial Reporting
Standard appli¢abl¢ in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective l January 2015>- (Charities SORP
QFRS 102)).
This report Is solely to the charity's trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 144 of the Ciwities Act
2011 and regulations rnadt under section 154 of that Act. Our WOTk has been undertaken so that we might state
to the trustees those matters we are required to state to trustecs an auditor5, report and for no other purpose.
To the fullest extent pern]itted by law, we do not accept or aSSu￿e responsibility to anyone other than the
charity and its trustees as a body, for our audit work, for this repor¢ or for the opinioDS we have forrned.
Re5peetive responsibilities of truste￿ and auditors
As explained more fully in the Statement of Trustees, Responsibilities (set out OD page 5), the tn15tee5 are
responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being saiisfied that they give a true and fair
view. W¢ have been appointed as auditors under s¢¢tion 144 of thc Chariiies Act 2011 and report in accordance
with regulations made under section 154 of that Act. Our responsibility IS to audit the fmancial staietnent5 in
accordance wsth applicable law and International Standards on Auditing (UK and Ir¢Sand}. Those stat]dards
require us to coinply with the Auditing Praciices Board's (APB'S) Ethical Standar(ts for Auditors.

The financial staieTnents have been prepared in accordance with the second edition of the Charities Ststetnent of
Recommendtd Practice issued in October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the Unsted
Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 1021 and tbe Chuities Act 2011.

The Misses Barrie Charitable Trust meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. The accounts
{financial staiementsl have been prepared under thc historical cost convention with items re¢ognised at cost or
transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts.

The trustees consider that there are no mateTial uncenainties about the charity's ability to continue as a gosng

Interest on fvnds hcld on deposit is included when receivable and the amount can be Me￿ured reliably by the

All expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to that expendiwre, it is probable

These include the costs altributsble to the charity's compliance with constitutional and statutory Tequirements,
tncluding audi¢ strat¢gi¢ management and trLtstees meetings and reimbursed expenses.
Taxation
The charity is considered to p&gs th¢ tests set out in Paragraph I Schedule 6 of the Finance Act 2010 and
therefore it meets the defjnition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes. Accordin?oly, the
charity is potentially exempt from taxation in respect of incorne or capitsl trains received within Categories
Covered by Chapter 3 Part I l of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 or Section 256 of the T￿atiOn of Chargeable
Gains Act 1992, to the ¢xtent that such income or gains are applied exclusively to charitable purposes.
Fixed 2s$et investments
Fixed assei investments, other than prowdmme r¢lated invesllnents, are included at market value at the balance
sheet date. Realised gau]5 and losses on investtnents are calculaied as the difference bettveen sales proceeds and
their market value at the start of the year. or their subsequent cosL and are charged or credited to the Statement
of Financial Activities in the period of disposal.
Unrealised gains and losses represent the movement in market values during the year and are ￿edited or
charged to the Statement of Financial Activities based on the market value at the year end.

Trade and other debtors are recognised at th¢ settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.
Prepay]nents are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.
Cash and cash equivalents

months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of the deposit or similar aceount.

Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resultints from a P￿ event

after allowing for any trade discounts due.
