## **Trustees' Report For The Year Ended 31 December 2025**

The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2025.

## **Objectives and Activities**

## **Aims and Objectives**

The principal object of the charity is to educate the public in the dramatic and operatic arts and to further the development of public appreciation and taste in the said arts. To achieve this the Portsmouth Players:

a) produce high quality musical productions from professional venues using professional costumes, scenery and directors.

b) produce a variety of operatic and dramatic arts in the Portsmouth area of a kind that would be unlikely to be brought to the city by touring professional companies.

c) set competitive ticket prices for all its productions

d) offer membership to a broad range of people to get involved in dramatic arts.

## **Significant Activities**

During the year the charity was able to produce one show at The Kings Theatre, Southsea and four shows at the Barn Studio Theatre.

## **Public Benefit**

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities. The trustees refer to public benefit throughout this report.

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

## **Achievements and Performance**

## **Main Achievements**

**Shows 2025** - The last year were pleased to be able to produce five successful shows.

## **– Legally Blonde February 2025 Kings Theatre**

Director and Choreographer - Lee Thompson Musical Director - Lou Helyer

The first show of 2025 we welcomed back Lee Thompson and he was ably supported by Louise Helyer who returned once more as MD. They were joined by Ellie Thomas and Ellie Scott as Dance Captains.

The set was once again created with pink style by Caroline Moloney, and she went above and beyond to furnish the set.

Jenny Edwards joined us as Wardrobe lead for this show with great effect.

Creatively the show was very successful with a strong cast led by a strong creative team. It was well received with a good profit made

## **The Good Life – June 2025 Barn Studio Theatre**

**The Portsmouth Players Trustees' Report (continued) For The Year Ended 31 December 2025**

## **Main Achievements - continued**

We welcomed back Miles Eden as Director. Miles brought life and humour to the play which was thoroughly enjoyed by good audiences. Tammy English led on costumes, bringing the 1970’s back to life with great style. Caroline Maloney recreated the Good’s and Leadbetter’s home to life with wonderful effect. Scott Dowell and Paul Moroney led our technical team.

This was very well received and made a good profit.

## **Love You, You’re Perfect Now Change – July 2025 - Barn Studio Theatre**

Director Jo Alldridge and Charlie Frame Musical Director Harry and Lou Helyer

Jo and Charlie joined forces on this lesser-known show. It was a show of joint efforts with Harry and Lou sharing the musical leadership too. We welcomed Meg Dickson as the assistant on this show. The space was effectively transformed by Caroline Maloney and Tammy English once again led an excellent set of stylish costumes. Scott Dowell led on the sound and projections which had been created by Katie Bosher and Paul Moroney was the lighting designer.

Although the show was very well received, sadly the houses were slow, and we made a small loss overall.

## **Company- October 2025– Barn Studio Theatre**

Director and Choreographer - Tim Quinlin Musical Director – Lou Helyer

Tim and Lou were once again ably at the helm of this piece with Rosy Stephens as Assistant Director. The simple and effective use of the space and costumes brought the piece alive with Scott Dowell taking the lead. A profit was made and the show was very well received.

## **The Vicar of Dibley, Christmas - November 2025 - Barn Studio Theatre**

Director – Miles Eden

Once again Miles returned to direct this iconic piece. He was supported by an excellent cast and technical team of Caroline Moroney and Scott Dowell. The life like set, costumes, sound and lighting were spot on. The play was well attended and received and made a welcome profit.

## **Future Shows**

We currently have planned the following shows for 2026:

- Miscast Again – March 2026 – Barn Studio Theatre

- Avenue Q – May 2026 – Theatre Royal

- The Sound of Julie – September 2026 - Barn Studio Theatre

- Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - October 2026- Theatre Royal Theatre

## **2026**

## **Our Centenary year**

- We launched our new website and branding style at the end of 2025, in readiness for the centenary year • Open Weekend and Centenary Celebrations 27&28 June 2026

- Centenary Ball – Queens Hotel Friday 13 November 2026

## **Financial Review**

## **Reserves Policy**

The trustees are continually monitoring the level of reserves held by the charity. The trustees consider that the charity needs to retain a level of reserves approximately equivalent to the complete loss on one major production. The trustees therefore consider that holding a reserve of approximately £50,000 is sufficient for that purpose.

## **The Portsmouth Players Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of The Portsmouth Players For The Year Ended 31 December 2025**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of The Portsmouth Players (the Trust) for the year ended 31 December 2025.

## **Responsibilities and Basis of Report**

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent Examiner's Statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and contents of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
