Receive and consider Annual Report of GTB, including Annual statement of accounts.<br>– RT explained situation with new auditor and that accounts still in process and will published on<br>website when complete.<br>– The surplus mainly due to better income from Gift Aid and better accounting, thank you to all parents<br>who had completed the form.<br>– First year using Go Cardless and despite small fee benefits to volunteers makes it worthwhile.<br>– Received an RN grant of £2500, thanks Kev, for Watersports equipment.<br>– Next year we have more projects in the pipeline, please speak to James K if you would like to know<br>more.<br>– NR asked if any questions for RT, then thanked for all his hard work.<br>Andy G commented how good the report was and testament to what 8thWorthing do.<br>MM acknowledged James Flint service with presentation.|

## Minutes AGM 2024 cont. 

> 5 Making Appointments Handed to MM to recommend NR as Group Chair, all approved. RT appointed Kirsty as Auditor JK offered to the floor for any helpers with Boat deck. Parent asked what would be happening with Starboard Cubs, MM reassured and said Laura was staying on remotely. MM not fair to ask other leaders as they do enough already. Will be asking parents to help occasionally. September may look a little different.

## Lead Volunteer 8th Worthing 

Welcome to 8th Worthing Sea Scout Group’s annual report and accounts for the period 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025. This year has seen transformation changes in Scouting, however despite all the changes 8th Worthing continues to grow and offer a diverse range of activities for all Sections. 

I want to start my report by thanking all the volunteers that support 8th Worthing behind the scenes, the Trustee Team ensure that Leaders have the funds and equipment to run activities safely. This has included several premises updates, James Kennedy has led those efforts which has included a new heating and lighting systems for HQ. James has been pivotal in updating the Boat Deck and has supported Leaders through the year. Harvey Cranford and Robert Tennent have supported the transport team, this allowed for the smooth operation of the mini bus and servicing of the trailers for transporting all of the boat equipment for those fun activity days! 

In the last year Explorers and both Scout troops camped on the Lord Amory ship in London, allowing young people in all Sections a bespoke opportunity to enjoy a range of water activities and other fun events and activities in London. Both the Scout and Cub Sections completed joint camps in 2024 which allowed Leaders’ skills and abilities to be pooled together to offer more opportunities for young people. 


Beaver Sections offered members the chance to enjoy the Go Beavers experience; this was possible due to the support of the Team Members. I also wish to thank the other Leaders and parent supporters that made it possible. There was also a fun packed water activity weekend for Cubs and Beavers which was organised by Kevin Lawrence and supported by Leaders across the Group. 

As Lead Volunteer it was my pleasure to lead 8th Worthing at the Remembrance Sunday parade, being part of the wider community in Tarring and supporting St Andrews Church. Massive thank you to all members that supported the parade and the parents and supporters that also showed their respect.

## Lead Volunteer 8th Worthing cont. 


As Lead Volunteer I want to reach out and thank everyone for their continued support as this has enabled the delivery of a diverse programme across all Sections. The benefit of Scouting has been highlighted with Arden and Sam achieving the highest award in Scouting, gaining the King Scout Award and going to Windsor Castle for the Day of Celebration. I want to assure all parents that at 8th Worthing, Leaders we will do their best to help young people in all of our Sections to maximise their potential. 

Volunteering is key to the success of 8th Worthing from the young people that - participate in the Young Leadership Programme through to long term adult volunteers who have supported 8th Worthing for decades. 

On 31st March 2025, we had 193 young people across the seven Sections, with 45 adult Leaders and 19 Young Leaders delivering programmes. This was supplemented by a number of regular Parent Helpers, without whom some Sections would not have been able to operate. 

As a Group we benefit from outstanding facilities and equipment as well as Leaders with a variety of skills and knowledge. Volunteering can improve physical and mental health as well as enable you to develop new skills and meet new people. - Without existing and new volunteers, we will struggle to continue to deliver on going positive outcomes at 8th Worthing so I am asking you to consider giving some of your time, and the best bit is no experience is needed! 

Finally, as Lead Volunteer I want to express my thanks and gratitude for your commitment on a weekly basis to ensure a diverse programme for the members. Volunteering is incredibly rewarding and beneficial to young people as well as the wider community.

## Chairman’s Report 

## Introduction 

This report comes as I complete my second year as Group Chair of 8th Worthing and it continues to be both an absolute honour to hold this position and, at the same time, incredibly humbling to watch the extraordinary efforts and dedication shown by our volunteers who all contribute to offering opportunities to young people in our area. 

8th Worthing Group includes Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and soon Squirrels sections and our volunteers continue to demonstrate a huge range of skills and we offer, amongst many diverse opportunities, camping, hiking, bee hive decoration, archery, games, air rifle shooting, paddle boarding, kayaking, cooking, fire building and bushcraft activities and this year I am particularly proud of our efforts to increase accessibility to all. For prospective new members we have a new web page for our waiting/joining list for all age groups that can be found at 8thworthing.org.uk. 

This year the Group Trustee Board has continued to focus on our transformation in line with The Scout Transformation Programme. The Transformation Programme separates Governance (Group Trustee Board) from operational (Group Leadership Team) matters. The Group Trustee Board is responsible for the Group running safely and legally and to ensure that 8th Worthing operates well today, and into the future, by managing its’ money by having an appropriate budget in place, having an annual statement of accounts that is audited by an independent person, that the Group follows Scouts Policies and relevant legislation, that we create an Annual Report and hold an AGM and we maintain and manage a risk register. 

This year we have lost three Trustees who I thank profusely for their dedication, – energy and commitment to 8th Worthing over the years we are hugely grateful – to Paul Chaplain, Kevin Lawrence and Elizabeth Holmes it is no exaggeration to state that without them 8th Worthing would not be the outstanding Group that it is today. 

The current Trustee Board is made up of myself as Chair, Robert Tennent as Treasurer, Mark Mears as Group Lead Volunteer and Alec Irving, James Kennedy and Harry Rippon as Trustees ably supported by Samantha Fullman. 

As promised at last year’s AGM we conducted an open recruitment campaign for new Trustees to add to the team with a particular focus on recruitment of two - young (eighteen to twenty five year old) Trustees. Despite an outstanding campaign we have not been able to add to our Board and, with the loss of three outstanding Trustees, we now have a number of opportunities. Being a Trustee can be an extremely rewarding opportunity and does not need a huge time commitment to be able to be an efficient contributor to the Board. I would encourage anybody who is interested in helping us either speak to me or email me in confidence at chair@8thworthing.org.uk.

## rustees 

Below are the Group accounts for the year ended 31[st] March 2025.  The accounts have been audited by an independent examiner, Kirstie Medlycott MICB of Angel Bookkeeping.  They represent the accounts for the Group and Sections combined.  Explorers are shown separately, as they are a District provision and therefore also included in the Worthing District accounts. 

The Group remains in good financial shape with the Group bank balance being £61,385 at year-end.  This is slightly down on the balance this time last year of £62,294, overall the Group had a deficit of £910. 

This deficit was less than expected.  As mentioned in last year’s Group Treasurer’s report we had planned many special projects in the 2024/25 year, however not all of these completed within the year.  A summary is below. 

Next financial year, 2025/26, the Trustees have agreed an operational budget that includes further special projects, as below, that will be partly funded by Reserves.  The budget vs. actual spend is managed monthly and scrutinised at each Trustee Board meeting to ensure we stay financially stable, and to ensure that we deliver against our Development Plan.

We started off the Summer term with Lee giving us a lovely evening on Bushcraft, then working towards the Global activity badge and looked at clean water, fairtrade and endangered animals. We also went on a minibeast hunt, explored Tarring, did the cyclist badge, went rock pooling and did a nature trail at Honeysuckle lane, and ended the term with a picnic and Games ant the HQ. 

In the Autumn term the Beavers did their safety, experiment and creative badges. We visited the windmill at High Salvington. The young people brought in Board games and a lovely evening was had by all. We also learned all about our teeth and had a visit from Sompting Morris Dancers (and the Leaders had to show the Beavers that we could Morris Dance as well!). We had a night walk along the beach, and ended the term with Christmas crafts. 

For the Spring term 2025 the Beavers did their space activity, Money Skills Badge and disability badges, for which Lisa who has learning Disabilities ran the evening for us. We visited Worthing library, had a Welsh evening, and James Kennedy lead us on a night hike around Steyning which everyone enjoyed, and also made Bird Feeders. 

I had 4 Beavers gaining their Chief Scout Bronze Award before going on to Cubs and these were Zachary Dines, Zak Manley. Rosa Carleysmith and Jude Green. I would also like to give special thanks to my Team Assistants Emma Wallace, Mel Doyle, and Alex Owen for all their invaluable help and support. I would also like to thank my Young Leaders past and present for all the assistance they give to the Colony.

## Starboard Beavers 

Starboard Beavers has been busy this year with lots of fun and learning activities. 

This year we have managed to gain 12 bronze awards, 86 challenge badges, 138 activity badges and a magnificent 107 staged badges.

## Starboard Beavers cont. 

Within our programme this year we have covered the disability awareness badge, health and fitness badge, international badge, explore badge, cooks badge, sports badge, hobbies badge, nautical skills, paddlesports, time on the water badge, hikes and of course covered the Challenge Badges which are needed to achieve our highest badge available within Beavers the Chief Scout Bronze award. 

None of our activities where we take the beavers out of the hall would be possible without the support of our parents. They really are amazing at responding when I request parents help. They put up with my endless messaging them reminding them of things and coaxing them to ask their child to complete badgework at home! 


Onto our Leadership team. I am so thrilled to tell you that both Hannah and Ronan who were our young leaders decided to stay with us having turned 18 and are now on our leadership team. 

Raine and Lizzie have both come back having had a short break which is fantastic. Unfortunately due to a knee operation which has taken longer to recover from than first thought Raine has been unable to join us this term. We wish her a speedy recovery. 

Stephen is my right hand man and is constantly reliable and has been there for me throughout this year. 

We also have our Young leaders Darcey and Anya who have been a fantastic help to us and they give great support to the beavers during our meetings. Thanks to them. 


So that’s the Starboard beavers report and I look forward to another year of running our beaver colony and hopefully “Making a difference” to these children’s lives.

## Port Cubs 

We've had a fantastic year at Port Cubs, filled with activities that focused on badgework, learning new skills, and building confidence. We believe in involving you, our cubs, in choosing the activities and challenges. This keeps things engaging and ensures we offer a varied and enjoy able programme. 

Camping continues to be a highlight of our scouting adventure. Every cub gets the chance to spend nights outdoors, cook their own meals, learn bushcraft skills, and boost their confidence through various sporting challenges. This year, we're eagerly anticipating an even more exciting camp with a - five day trip to Bushy Wood.

Welcome to the report for Starboard Cubs, as Lead Volunteer I am currently caretaking the Section and so pleased we have continued to provide a diverse program me in 2024/2025.

## Port Scouts 

Another packed year at Port Scouts with Watersports, Camps, Hikes, Community Projects, Pioneering, Tent pitching all before the end of Summer. 


We started off the Summer Term with some Crossbow shooting, Paddleboarding and Kayaking on Southwater Lake, Expedition Planning, Hikes, Tent Pitching before rounding off with sausages on the fire at Dapper Lane. 

Our Community Project was at Durrington Infants where we cleared an area to enhance their outdoor curriculum offering an opportunity to have a small forest school area and a wildlife garden. The effort from the whole troop, parents and grandparents was fantastic.

We took the eldest scouts on their Expedition Camp, where we walked from Holmbush over Devils Dyke to our Campsite. A great weekend for us to bring together all the scouting skills of navigation, camping and cooking we have learned over our time together. 


Autumn term we refined our shooting skills with Rifle Shooting and Archery. We learned some First Aid skills, practised her Pioneering and knot skills, went on night hikes, visited the local Ice Rink and even managed to have a Christmas  Party before the end of the year.

A total of 260 badges were awarded to our troop of which 19 were for Time on the Water, 11 for Nautical Skills, 26 for Paddle Sports and 27 for Sailing. 5 Chief Scout Gold Awards achieved. 

Finally, we welcomed 3 new leaders to our team, Arden Flint, Jamie Smith and Ross - Peters not to mention our fantastic young leader Bailey Norton Griffiths and saw Sam Mears and Arden Flint collect their King Scout Awards at Windsor Castle. Huge congratulations to them both. 

Best of all, we have had lots of fun, adventure and laughter.

Over the last year members of Starboard Troop have been awarded with 91 challenge badges, 101 activity badges, 134 staged activity badges. 

– Three Scouts being awarded with the Chief Scout Gold Award Etty, Anya and Oliver. 

At Starboard Troop, we have done all the normal things that a Scout Troop would - - do in a year pioneering, hikes, rifle shooting, archery and of course some time on the water. 

Below are quotes from some of the Scouts about what that have enjoyed in this year’s programme.

## Osprey Explorer Unit 

At the end of March this year, we had 48 invested Explorers. We continue to be one of the biggest Explorer Units in the UK. Osprey ESU continue in partnership with 8th Worthing and we appreciate the mutual benefits that being a part of the group bring. We have 19 members of the Unit serving as Young Leaders within the group. 

Core Programme 

The Unit’s core program contains two main elements: 

1. The Chief Scouts (CS) Awards 

2. Nautical Skills / Water Activities 

Also central to the programme is the DofE Award: 

– – – Bronze Platinum Award Silver Diamond Award Gold Queens Scout Award 

- programme of activities for anyone aged 14 25. Founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956, there are 3 progressive levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. At each level participants undertake activities in 4 Sections: 

– – Volunteering undertaking service to individuals or the community Physical – improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities Skills developing – practical and social skills and personal interests Expedition planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad 

Gold programme participants must also do an additional 5th Residential section which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity. 

The DofE offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to learn about commitment, responsibility and independence. Gaining any one of the 3 levels of the DofE Award is a huge achievement. 

We have had a successful year with these awards, seeing Osprey Explorers achieve: 

– - 5 x Bronze Awards Henry Bullock, Ronnie Green, Sammy Henderson Ford, Conrad Szilvasi, Amy Vernon 

– 3 x Silver Awards Leven Fullman, Thea Loxham, Noah Stepney 

– 1 x Gold Award Arden Flint 

We currently have 24 Explorer’s working towards their Bronze award and 11 towards their Silver.

## Osprey Explorer Unit 

As stated above, many of our participants carry out their Young Leader Training through Explorers and help with various sections in the Group to complete the Volunteering Section of their Award. 

Other activities include coaching dance, being a Young Leader for the Girlguiding and teaching IT skills. 

The Physical Recreation section always includes a wide range of activities. At Bronze level, this year has included swimming, playing team games (such as football and rugby), dance, sailing, gym work, martial arts (such as kung fu), basketball, mountain biking, home fitness and walking. Silver has included dance, golf, tap dancing, walking, badminton and swimming. 

The Skills section is always interesting as the Explorers show what a wide variety of skills they have and what really interests them. At Bronze these include learning a musical instrument (such as piano and guitar), performing arts, crocheting, music appreciation, cooking, coding and money management. Silver includes baking, cooking, learning a musical instrument (such as bass guitar), performing arts and chess. 

We held successful expeditions for both Bronze and Silver levels this year. 

In May, 14 Explorers took part in their Bronze Qualifying Expedition in the West Dean area and in August, 5 Explorers completed their Silver expedition in the New Forest. 

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the Leaders who have supported our – Explorers to achieve these awards Paul Chaplain (Bronze Expedition Lead Supervisor / Silver Mentor), Lee Martin (Expedition Supervisor / Bronze Mentor), Jennah Costan (Expedition Supervisor / Bronze Mentor), Lucy Poole (Expedition Supervisor / Bronze Mentor), Kevin Lawrence (Expedition Supervisor), Samantha Fullman (Expedition Supervisor), Steve Briscoe (Bronze & Silver Assessor), Tavis Stringer (Bronze Mentor) and any others that have either acted as an Assessor or welcomed our Young Leaders into their Leadership teams.

In addition to the core activities, we have enjoyed a varied balanced programme this year and these are some of the things we have done:

– Life Skills Look after Baby Kevin, Without a recipe, Learning about motorbikes, Emergency management 

– Youth Shaped Scouting Programme planning 

– Miscellaneous Night At The Races, End of season BBQ, Make your magic, Gala on Elm Street, Wicked, Xmas party, Neon lights 

## Events 

In April, we went and supported our friends in the Worthing Gang Show. Well done to all who took part, either on stage or behind the scenes. Amazingly, 3 of our Explorers were part of the cast and 4 of our Leaders were in the Production Team. 

In June, we went back to Northampton Active for some whitewater kayaking with 6 Explorers. Thank you to Paul and Kev for running it. 

Also in June, a group of Explorers took to the English Channel for a bit of yachting on the local Supeta yacht, learning various sailing skills and enjoying the Summer sun. Thank you to 3rd / 5th Lancing Sea Scouts for having us. 

In the same month, we attended the Group AGM to hear about all the good work 8th Worthing has been doing and how Osprey fits in with that. We even had a talk from two Explorers about their journey completing their King Scout Award, the highest award you can achieve in Scouting. 

In October, 2 Explorers had a kayaking session in a swimming pool so they could learn and enhance some of their skills. Thank you to Great Ballard School for the use of their pool, Paul for running the session and Arden for supporting. 

In November, we paid our respects to those who gave their lives for us by joining up with 8th Worthing for their Remembrance Parade. Thank you to Lucy and Tavis for leading Osprey in my absence. 8thworthing.org.uk/join

## Osprey Explorer Unit 

## Camps 

In July, 29 Explorers and a team of 7 Leaders headed to the Dockland Scout Project to stay on a ship moored in Canary Wharf, London for a week. They visited the O2, took part in an immersive experience; Phantom Peak, solved a murder mystery on the boat, got a behind the scenes tour of the Houses of Parliament, took in the sights at the top of Tower Bridge, watched Wicked on the West End, visited Mudchute Farm to feed the animals, powerboating, kayaking, giant paddleboarding, created and filmed movies, got dressed up for a fancy party, went to the London museums and raced against each other in the Monopoly Challenge! Thank you to Paul, Kev, Lucy, Jennah, Val and Steve for all your help. 

- In September, 5 Explorers represented Osprey at the Royal Navy Multi Sport Competition. By night, they camped on the grounds of HMS Sultan in Gosport. By day, they competed in various physical challenges, winning the football tournament and the majority of their other matches, even getting a note from the organisers acknowledging the teamwork on display for all to see. Thank you to Jennah for being the Assistant Coach for this challenge. 

- Also in September, 9 Explorers attended WS24, a 24 hour camp held at Beacons Hill. They completed various challenges over the 24 hours and tried their best to stay up for the whole event … some may even have achieved it. Thank you to Lee for supporting and running the Bushcraft element. 

In December, 26 Explorers went up to London for Christmas Camp. Unfortunately the original plan of Winter Wonderland was cancelled due to the storm, so a Plan B was discussed with the attendees and shopping before the cinema came up as the favoured option. On Sunday, we stopped off at the Tulley’s Farm escape rooms on our way home. Thank you to Jennah for planning and running the camp and Paul and Lucy for supporting. 

In February, 2 Explorers returned to join District and take on the Bivvy Camp. They slept outside for the event in the freezing temperatures all in the name of International Bivvybag Day. Thank you to Lee for supporting the Osprey - contingent and Al (14 24 Team Leader) for running the event.
