He mentioned he would normally reach for certificates but could not due to being virtual! Al mentioned there were a number of adults due a long service award and went through them. He said 10 Years was over 3 x’s the average time most leaders stayed in post and gave ‘BIG’ thanks to Paul, and commented on his great achievement.

Al presented the Commissioner's commendation, he said unfortunately it had not been possible to present the following awards in person due to Covid.

Lucy, Toby, Alex, and James have all been helping at Cubs despite having their own pressures. Harry and Charlotte helping at Port Scouts.

## Group Scout Leader

## **Petula Bladen, Group Scout Leader**

Welcome to 8th Worthing Sea Scout Group’s annual report and accounts for the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. Once again this report highlights the incredible dedication of the volunteers that, directly and indirectly, prepare so many young people with skills for life. Please read all the section reports for details of their events. The focus for my report is a Group overview and it is a little different again this year as we have had no groupwide events.

The following paragraph was the closing month of last years review :

_And so to the future. We have started to meet face to face again, watching the roadmap for our way back to camping and expeditions and water activities but we have learnt new skills and we will take those with us. It’s a brave new world that we face and we shouldn’t forget the lessons this year has taught us. We are resilient, we are flexible, we are creative, we are strong, we are 8[th] Worthing Sea Scouts and together we have survived Covid-19_

Over the following weeks and months scouting stumbled back into the great outdoors and despite the country wavering from time to time, on January 27[th] 2022 we finally regained our green status. Though even now we are mindful that the virus has not gone away and many of the good hygiene and social distancing practices we learnt during the pandemic have become part of our ongoing lifestyle.

As we returned to scouting all the sections got back on the adventure as if they had never been away. You will have seen all of the exciting things that have been experienced and achieved in the section reports. Our newly formed exec has focused on the exciting future ahead and each section has contributed over the past months by attending consultation evenings and responding to the surveys. You will have read this in the chairman’s report. A Group camp which has been delayed by covid is now being planned for next year. There are exciting times ahead for 8[th] Worthing.

This year has been a mixture of new beginnings and of sad loss. We said goodbye to Nick Davies ( Hairy ) in December, his silly hats and camping gadgets forever immortalised in our memories. And we said hello to a number of new leaders, returning leaders and Young leaders joining as adults. Welcome to one and all and thank you so much for being part of the team.

On 31[st] March 2022 we had 199 young people across the 7 sections, 35 Adults delivering program and 22 young leaders in sections. This was supplemented by a number of regular parent helpers, without whom some sections would not have been able to operate. Thank you is not a big enough word to express the gratitude and admiration I have for all of you. Leaders, young and not so young, who continue to work tirelessly to provide programs for their sections. Exec members with their eyes on the future whilst keeping the HQ and our assets maintained and secure. Parents, grandparents and all those pairs of hands and eyes that help supervise and encourage home activities and all those who have joined our parent rotas to make sure the evenings can run safely. Every person has played their part and all should be immensely proud of what has been achieved.

A special thank you to the two members of my team without whom, well nothing would work to be honest! Paul Chaplain, who has successfully implemented the change to OSM Accounts which will help sections manage their finance and save so much administrative time. He continues to support the OSM and Office 365 platforms that are so crucial to our communications as well as the one-to-one support for all those picnic moments ( problem in chair not in computer) Kevin Lawrence who continues to support all sections

in their adventures. Giving up weekends to ensure that younger sections get on the water experience, planning and leading training events and helping the bosuns team and others to ensure our marine fleet and kit are fit for purpose. Thank you both!

After 15 years with 8[th] it is now time for me to embark on a new adventure of my own. As I say goodbye, I remember all the wonderful events and activities that have been run, the laughter, the tears, the “are we going to make it” moments and the huge achievements of so many as they stepped on our new challenges and overcame them.

As I write this report, I have already handed on the GSL baton to Mark Mears and can leave with a happy heart knowing that the 8[th] team is in such capable hands

Scouting teaches us that we are Braver than we believe, Stronger than we seem and Smarter than we think. I am forever grateful for having had the opportunity to have been part of your great adventure and to have learnt these things.

I would wish you luck for the future but you don’t need luck because you have each other and as we face our new adventures, I quote Lord Robert Baden-Powell: **"Be Prepared." "Be prepared for what?" "Why, for any old thing."**

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

## Group Chair

## **Chairman’s Report for 2021/22**

## **Introduction**

Unbelievably this is still only my first year in the role of Group Chair, following Roger Green’s retirement after 23 years of sterling service to 8[th] Worthing in June 2021. I am immensely proud to hold this position and do what I can to ensure the Group, which was established in 1928, recognises its heritage but also changes and develops appropriately.

## **The 8[th] Worthing Team**

I know that 2021/22 was a difficult year for many families with some suffering significant illness and some loosing close ones. In 8[th] Worthing we lost Nick (Hairy) Davis, someone I have known since I was a teenager, he was a unique and colourful character, who always made me laugh and quietly contributed to many, many years of Scouting in the Worthing District. With the generosity of Nick’s family, the Group has purchased a bell tent from the donations made in memory of Nick and we hope to have it on display at the AGM on Wednesday 6th July.

I would like to thank all the 8[th] Worthing team (uniformed and non-uniformed) that put in so much time and effort to make the 8[th] so successful. Without the dedication of the leaders and help from others, the Group simply wouldn’t function. Perhaps you could spare some time to support an organisation that helps to develop over 200 young people in our community every week?

Whilst this report covers the period up to March 2022, I must mention some of the significant changes within the Group after that date. Petula Bladen, our Group Scout Leader, decided to stand down from all her Scouting roles in 8[th] Worthing and the District in June 2022. Pet’s energy, endless enthusiasm, and drive to keep the Group going during Covid was simply outstanding and her massive contribution over the years will be missed by all. Mark Mears took the helm in June when he was appointed GSL previously being the Port Scout Leader. He has two children in 8[th] Worthing so is well versed on how the Group “ticks” and whilst he has some big shoes to fill, he too has energy and plans and has the full weight (that’s a lot if you include me!) of the Executive Team behind him.

## **Executive Committee**

I also wish to thank the Executive Committee for their patience with the new Chair “finding his way” through the Scout processes and terminology. Their invaluable contribution to the overall governance and strategy of the Group assets, finances, safety, training etc this year has been very significant.

The Executive Team are working well together and have had a busy and productive year. Key highlights include:

- Re-visiting the financial policy and delegated powers

- Improving the approach to safety management and reporting

- Creating and agreeing a detailed, cost neutral, operational budget for 2022/23

- Publishing a Development Plan following input from a wide set of stakeholders that sets the strategy and initiatives for the next three years

- Initiating the Roof Replacement Project

9

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022** The Group Treasurer, Diane Waring, has decided to step down due to her personal circumstances. She has done a great job keeping our finances in good order for over five years. I am currently doing the Treasurer role until a replacement steps forward.

Following Storm Eunice, when several asbestos roof panels blew off and landed in the school playing field, we agreed that the work on the Toilet Replacement should be put on hold, and the Roof Replacement Project “stepped-up”. A specification was drawn up, sent to four contractors, and a fixed-price quote has now been accepted by the Executive. An update on this project will be provided at the AGM.

A purpose-built off-site gas storage facility has been constructed for our Propane gas. This has permitted the gas to be removed from the HQ building, eliminating a significant risk, and the quantity and range of cannisters to be consolidated. In addition to this six-monthly HQ safety inspections have commenced, and a central online Incident/Accident log created reducing the amount of paperwork for everybody. This in addition to all of the other day-to-day activities (gas inspection, electrical testing, asbestos tests, fire extinguisher testing, weekly alarm testing, minibus service and maintenance) that takes place.

## **Development Plan**

The time spent creating the three-year Development plan for the Group with valuable input from a wide audience is commendable and puts us in a good place to move forward in an organised way. The plan will help us manage our assets better, prioritise our initiatives and improve our diversity and behaviours. A small step in this area is the creation and approval of a detailed annual budget for the Group.

## **Some of the Significant Others...**

Whilst the Bosuns report to the GSL Team, I must mention all the work they do behind the scenes checking, repairing and replenishing the rich set of equipment that the Group is fortunate to have in its possession.

A special mention to Robert for the effort he puts into claiming funds from the HMRC Gift Aid scheme. With his meticulous record-keeping and tenacity, the Group receives over £5000 income from the HMRC every year. Have you signed up for Gift Aid?

And Stacey, who does a first-class job keeping the HQ clean, tidy (and adequately labelled!) for all of us to enjoy.

Finally, I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy 2022/23 and I hope you get time to enjoy some of the vast range of exciting activities and events that the Leaders have planned throughout the year!

Mark Anderson

## Group Treasurer

Below are the audited Group accounts for the year ended 31st March 2022. They have been audited this year by an independent accountant, Mr Allan Gee. They represent the accounts for the Group and sections combined. Explorers are shown separately, as they are a District provision and therefore also included in the Worthing District accounts.

The Group remains in good financial shape with the Group bank balance being £92,395 at 31 March 22 compared to £72,554 for the previous year. The £19,761 surplus in the year was due to our overheads (gas, electric, water) being more favourably as meetings were still taking place remotely due to Covid 19 restrictions, our inability to provide a full programme of activities and the increase in subs from £12 to £15.

Next year, 2022/23, the Group has allocated a sum of £75,000 for the Roof Replacement Project and created a “break-even” operational budget that will enable a wide range of activities and subsidy for waterbased activities. This will deliver a forecast bank balance for the end of next year (31 March 2023) of circa £17,000. Whist the budget takes into account some level of inflation, the Executive will need to manage the budget closely and scrutinise any unplanned expenditure to ensure we stay financially stable and deliver against our Development Plan.

Following the disposal of the former Scout building in Anglesea Street, Worthing, it has now been confirmed that during 2022/23 Worthing District will provide 8[th] Worthing with £11,000 towards the development plan. This figure is not included in the above sums.

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

## Port Beavers

This report is for the period of 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022.

At the start of the Summer Term I “took over” as the Beaver Scout leader as our beloved Leader Jane Preston and her husband Keith Preston were “eventually” relocating to Herefordshire to be closer to family. As we were still unable to run a proper programme, we split our Beavers into 2 groups. Jane and Keith ran an earlier session, and myself along with my other leaders ran a later session. We used the same programme but did it our own way! The Beavers learned all about teeth, knots and as Beavers celebrated 35 years, we ran a 35 evening (things involving the number 35). The Beavers then worked on the Cyclist badge which they all passed with no accidents. Zoom cooking was another fun

evening led by Jane and Keith making fish shaped biscuits and our young Leaders ran a Health and Fitness evening. We ended the term with a campfire and campfire singing down at the compound in Goring.

During the Summer Holidays they had the opportunity to go to Southwater Country Park where some of our Beavers achieved their Time on the Water, and Level 1 Paddle Sports and Nautical Skills.

In the Autumn term the Beavers did their Air Activity badge, their Emergency Aid 1 badge, and their communicator badge. We had a visit from Jaws and Claws, which the children thoroughly enjoyed, and an evening at Out of Bounds on the Adventure Nets, (yet another enjoyable evening). We also said farewell to Jane and Keith with a “party” which was organised by Emma and Mel and my other leaders. Leaders, friends, past and present were there, and a good time was had by all. We had our annual sleepover at the HQ and took the Beavers to “Go Ape” at Crawley where they worked up an appetite for their fish and chips supper, and some even overcame their fear of

hights! We finished the term with a visit to see “Beauty and the Beast” with Starboard Beavers at the Pavilion.

For the Spring term 2021 one of our leaders Mel ‘took’ the children on the trip round the world that she did with her family when she was young. They tasted food from Europe, went Bowling, learnt about Beavers from other countries as well, and completed the International badge. Due to lots of sessions on Zoom and not being able to visit places, only a few of my Beavers going on to Cubs gained their Chief Scout Bronze Awards before leaving.

I would like to give special thanks my Colony Assistants Emma Wallace, Mel Doyle, Alex Owen, and Dane Earl, my ABSL Andrew Shakespeare, and my Young Leaders for all their invaluable help and support with which I couldn’t have done without for my first year as Port Beaver Leader.

## Starboard Beavers

Starboard Beavers has been as popular this year as it ever has been. Our numbers are at Maximum and our joining list is full to bursting with children wanting to join us at beavers. Despite Covid restrictions which were throughout the Spring term we have managed to gain 10 bronze awards, 61 challenge badges, 102 activity badges and a magnificent 107 staged badges.

We started our year in April with our Beavers being split into two groups to make the numbers smaller within the hall due to covid restrictions. We also held our Zoom meeting every third week so that the Beavers could all see each other and of course have fun making pizzas at home and the never-ending treasure hunts! However as this was the summer term we managed to take all the Beavers to Honeysuckle lane, Rock-pooling crabbing night and a Hike on Cissbury.

In July the Beavers had the fantastic opportunity of going to Southwater and having activities out on the water kayaking. The weather was fantastic and I had lots of messages from parents saying how much the beavers enjoyed the activity. Many thanks to all leaders from all sections who made this possible for our Beaver scouts.

As is tradition we held our water gun/super soaker night at the end of the summer term and great fun was had by all with the Beavers enjoying soaking us leaders and young leaders and of In September we went to the Adventure Nets in Rustington which was a great success, we had one of the Beaver scouts Grandad come to give us a talk about Bee keeping and in October we held a junk/ recycling modelling night with many amazing creations being achieved.

In November we held our first sleepover for nearly 2 years! We chose a brand-new venue to us Flip Out the trampoline park in Chichester. It was great to see the Beavers having such an amazing time and enjoying each other’s company. Even though they didn’t get a lot of sleep they were all still enthusiastic to have an hour-long private jump which we had first thing in the morning.

We also attended the Remembrance Day service at the town hall. The beavers were exemplary in their behaviour throughout the service.

In December we joined up with Port Beavers and went to watch Beauty and the Beast pantomime at the pavilion..........Oh yes we did!

In February we visited Worthing bowl for a 10 pin bowling evening.

In March we went to clip and climb in Rustington and the Beavers were like little mountain goats using the equipment!

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

At the end of each term we hold a badge presentation evening. Due to covid restrictions we held two of our presentations via Facebook live so the parents could watch it. Traditionally the parents attend this night and I am pleased to say at the end of the Spring term we were able to hold this again with the parents joining in with our campfire songs!

Within our programme we have covered the emergency aid badge, builder badge, communicator badge, safety badge, nautical skills, nights away, paddle sports, hikes and of course covered the Challenge Badges which are needed to achieve our highest badge available within Beavers the Chief Scout Bronze award.

None of our activities where we take the beavers out of the hall would be possible without the support of our parents. They really are amazing at responding when I request parents help. They put up with my endless messaging them reminding them of things and coaxing them to complete activities at home!

We have had an amazing team of young leaders join us to help our leadership team since September. They are totally self-motivated now and are a huge asset to our leadership team.

Due to work commitments Raine (Squirrel) my ABSL has been unable to attend beavers but we hope to have her back soon. Rabbit (Liz) has supported us all the way through this year despite being pregnant and ultimately at higher risk of contracting covid until she had her second son Rexel hope to have a cuddle with him soon and of course will welcome her back once her life isn’t so hectic! Fox (Stephen) has been my rock and aside from one meeting when unfortunately, he contracted COVID he has supported me and helped me throughout this whole year. I would just like to mention how amazing our GSL Petula has been throughout the years. She has been our guiding star throughout the whole covid restrictions period and beyond. Unfortunately, she has taken the decision to retire from scouting and we will miss her very much but we wish her well in her new adventures.

We welcome our new GSL Mark who has taken on the role.

So that’s the Starboard beavers report and personally I look forward to another year of running our beaver colony and hopefully “Making a difference” to these children’s lives.

_As always_

## Starboard Cubs

Starboard Cubs Annual Report 2022 – April 2021 – March 2022

This year has seen some huge changes for Starboard Cubs. We started this reporting year in Easter 2021, still doing online Cubs, and we’ve finished it getting ready to go back to camping for the first time in nearly 3 years! All through this year and all the Cubs have been fantastic and risen and adapted to all the challenges, and as a Leader it is so satisfying seeing them enjoying Cubs, and once they move on having new experiences at Scouts.

As well as changes to our programme we’ve had some big changes to our Leadership team. After bringing us back from online to face-to-face meetings Jemima Martin stepped down and Jayne Gathergood has taken over as Akela for both Starboard and Midship Cubs. We also said goodbye to Moses (Baloo) and two of our Young Leaders, Toby and Lucy who have moved to Starboard Scouts. We’ve been joined by Stacey Wheatley and brilliant new Young Leaders Robin, Beattie and Courtney, alongside the existing team of Andy (Bagheera) and Alex (Chil) and occasional guest appearances from Kevin (Wontolla) and Petula (Ikki). Since coming back we’ve also been helped by lots of parents who have volunteered to come along to help during evenings, a huge thank you to you all, the evenings couldn’t run without your help!

During the year we’ve done firelighting at the Compound on the beach, crazy golf, toured the bus station, kayaking at Southwater, games at Lancing Ring, axe and knife safety, scarecrow building and scarecrow hunting around Worthing, pumpkin carving, fireworks, Remembrance and St Georges Day parades, hobbies evening and ice skating, pioneering and lots of games! And that’s just during our meetings, the Cubs have been extremely busy at home as well. In total over 200 badges have been awarded this year, including several Chief Scouts Silver Awards, the highest award that a Cub can earn!

During this year we also had the incredibly sad news that Nick ‘Hairy’ Davies had passed away just before Christmas. Hairy started as an Assistant Scout Leader at 1st Worthing in 1979 until 1983 and then 10th Worthing in 1993,

moving to Scout Leader in 1996 until June 2000. Hairy then joined 8th Worthing and Starboard Cubs in around 2007 but overall it means he was a Leader in various guises and various Groups for over 40 years and some rough maths means that he has taught and helped over 600 Young People, a huge legacy.

So how do we follow a year like that? The rest of 2022 will see Sleepovers,

camping, water activities, hiking, more badges, more fun and hopefully more Cubs

that grow into Scouts and Explorers and come back and teach the next generation! And wait till you see what we’ve got planned for 2023.......

## Midship Cubs

Since returning to Cub Scouting at 8[th] Worthing, where I started my scouting journey as an assistant Beaver leader in 2000 then after a few years moved on to cubs. It’s like I haven’t been away! Thank you all for welcoming me back.

Now with Midship and helping at Starboard Cubs, so far our weekly

program that I have been involved with has covered the

Communicators badge and Christmas Crafts to make us all feel

We did a beach walk and a problem-solving night. In January we

had our investitures which was an honour for me to do, I even

Continuation and re-capping of Emergency aid was covered and run by Kevin, this also helps to reinforce an important skill.

Recycling! Something as the Cubs will tell you I am passionate about, we learnt that almost everything is recyclable via different places to take our waste, these companies then turn toothbrushes and paste tubes into tables! We all need to do our bit to look after our damaged planet for our children and grandchildren in my case. Reuse or recycle. Thank you to James for putting this night together.

So using plastic bottles, washed gravel, Terrarium compost and baby plants, we created our own bottle gardens as a gift for someone special. Mine did really well and I have now potted up my

Camp Gadgets night, lots of knots and lashings to learn. The young people loved this and quickly remembered their knots and created washing up stands, which did stand up! Mostly. Washing up, which is a skill and ends up being loved by the Cubs on camp, it actually does! They care for their own kit they bring

with them. So after our camp you will have a new washer upper!

Up and coming are our Joint Starboard/Midship sleepovers and in August our joint camp. Can’t wait.

Kevin ran our night hike, which they all enjoyed and they didn’t get lost!

To top off the term Petula ran our Easter egg hunt on the field but the wind blew the eggs around! we moved back inside to have an Illuminated egg and spoon race which was a big hit.

So all in all accepting our recent leadership changes, I’d like to

thank the Cubs and their carers from both Starboard and Midship’s for bearing with us, stepping up and helping at our meetings and offering to help at our future meetings, sleepovers and our summer And our team that works together. Petula, James, Stacey, Megan

from Midship Cubs. Again, Petula and Stacey, Andy, Jem, Scott, Alex, Bettie-Rose, Robin, Michael, Courtney and not forgetting Alex. From Starboard Cubs.

20

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

Gone, but never forgotten” Hairy” Nick Davis, building a camp fire in heaven no doubt.

Thank you Jacky for your Treasuring over the years, happy retirement!

To Stacey for taking up the mantle and now covering Midship accounts as well as Starboard.

A big thank you to you all for your hard work and continued commitment to young people in scouting. Enabling us all to continue to deliver Scouting skills for life in a safe and measured environment to our young people.

Our Scouting adventure continues. “Look Wide” Baden Powell used to say.

- “Be Prepared” Always.

## **8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

Summer Term 2021 brought us back together with face-to-face Scouting after the virtual world we experienced for the previous 12 months. Started back with some Covid restrictions and smaller groups and just want to thank all the Scouts and Parents for their support during the restrictions and supporting the Leadership Team to keep the Scouts safety at the heart of everything we do.

Map skills were tested on our hike at Lancing Ring, thanks to James for sorting a great route it allowed us all to brush down our hiking boots and practice map skills. Moving to Investitures in June and it was brilliant to have the whole section together, welcoming James, Owen and Tommy to Port Scouts. Despite the restrictions we managed to have a number of brilliant nights in the summer teaching skills including axe throwing. End of the summer term took us to

Out of Bounds centre for Crazy Golf and Adventure Nets, special mention to the Scout or Young Leader who knocked me for six! On the last night there was a special mention and goodbye to Harry Chaplain and Charlotte Walker, both have been Young Leaders with Port Scouts for over 4 years and have developed into Leaders of the future!

September and straight into Water Activity days at South Water, massive thank you to Yvonne and James for organising the SUP and Kayaking days for the whole Section. Engagement was brilliant and it was so good to see all the photos on Facebook, pity Andrew lost his phone in South Water Lake! The days were supported by so many parents, also acknowledging the support from other Leaders from other Sections across 8[th] Worthing which made these days possible.

Fire Starters in October, back to Dappers Lane for a brilliant night of scouting skills, and the with some changes to our Young Leaders team, Samuel was joined by Arden, Josh followed by Ben. We have finished the year with a brilliant and engaging Young Leader Team at Port Scouts. That was followed by our first camping experience since Covid. A number of Scouts went on a fun expedition camp which has enabled some of them to achieve their Gold Scout Award.

The festive season came upon us in December and pleased to have the return of the Festive Generation Game and the welcome return of festive wreaths on a face-to-face basis. It was brilliant to see so many parents and family members coming along to participate in a brilliant night. This was followed by a festive games and disco night, reaching out to thank our resident DJ Neil Evans! Ice Skating finished the year in style with a number of other Scout groups in Worthing.

2022 arrived and the first night was Have Your Say, massive thank you for the brilliant turnout of parents on the night who showed commitment and have continued to make a massive contribution to support Port Scouts. Just want to reach out and show the Leadership appreciation of the support parents have shown and continue to show in future events that are planned in summer 2022.

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

In February we had a special night which involved the distribution of Silver and Gold Scout Awards to a number of members and past members. These awards are a recognition of their achievements which has been particularly hard due to the Covid restrictions. Congratulations to the following:

**Silver Scout Award** : Tajus Jasokinas, Fiyinfoluwa Balogun, Ronnie Green, Dylan Cox, Isaac Cox & Aaron Loxham.

**Gold Scout Award** : Michael Edwards, Hayden Jackson, Logan Wheatley, Arden Flint, Ronan Gilham, Ollie Thorpe, Ben Smith, Kieran Doyle, Hannah Cory, Maisie Chambers, Oscar Messingham, Thea Loxham, Megan Mears & Cameron

On the same night we completed investitures and welcomed

We also had to say goodbye to Leven, Oscar, Hannah, Thea, Maisie & Megan. This was a special night for all the Leaders as these were the first Scouts, we have seen through their

Moving into Spring term we had a number of brilliant nights including Warhammer Programme and Back to Nature, improving gardening skills for Scouts and Leaders alike!

We now move into Summer term and have loads of excellent events and activities planned. These include HMS Belfast visit, Supeta Yacht experience and finally the Port Scout Summer Camp. The Camp is being led by Andrew and there is an action-packed programme lined up for all Scouts attending.

Finally, none of this would be possible if it was not for the brilliant Leadership Team. I would like to firstly welcome the new members to our team in the last year, Bryn Clements, Clare- Louise Wright, Arden Flint, Josh Shaley and Ben Smith and I would like to recognise their achievements since joining Port Scouts. I would also like to thank the following Leaders for their continued support, Andy Gilham, Jo Gilham, Yvonne Barr, James Flint, Andrew Shakespeare and Samuel Mears as well as Tom Naylor Smith who has continued to support us in the role of Section Treasurer.

It has been my pleasure leading Port Scouts for the last 12 months; I hope you are ready for an exciting Summer 2022!

## Starboard Scouts

This year at Starboard Scouts was an amazing challenge that I would like to say has gone very well. The summer term started off with a blended online and in person meetings with the troop being split into groups to take part in these.

We utilised our connection with The Compound to run COVID-19 safe axe, saw and fire lighting sessions as well as running some of the mechanics badge online. We went for hikes across the downs and learned some local knowledge as well as having some fun at adventure golf, geocaching and Olympics before the

At the final meeting of summer, we said goodbye to Sam Briscoe who was moving away from Worthing. The scouts and leaders presented her with cards and

gifts and we thanked her for the amazing work she did for Starboard Scouts and she passed on the reigns to Sam Rippon and myself.

Once back in September, we kicked off the term by introducing our new starters and playing a troop favourite of Pirates! During this term, we were meeting in person for every evening for the first time in 18 months that both leaders and scouts loved. We did a mixture of useful first aid skills to doing a wide game in the dark to crafts and games before the Christmas break.

In the spring term, we celebrated a lot of festivals and

occasions that happen including Chinese New Year and Pancake Day! The troop decided to go Ice Skating and have a night by the fire at Streamside. We planned an expedition challenge camp and some scouts and Explorers planned their route for this to happen over Easter.

During the year we had 8 new joiners start the section, both from cubs and from outside of 8[th] Worthing. We also welcomed and invested 2 new leaders – Kitty Smith who previously was a Scout at 8[th] Worthing and Tom Brownbill who has stayed on with us since turning 18.

In this period, we awarded almost 250 badges including 11 challenge badges, 70 Staged badges and 140 activity badged including the majority of the troop earning the mechanics, forester and scientist badge. We were very proud of the amazing turn out both us as a troop but also 8[th] Worthing as a whole showed at Remembrance Day Parade in Worthing.

As mentioned, this year was a challenge with us going back to full time face to face scouting as well as Sam moving on but I would like to thank all of the Scouts for being terrific as well as Kitty Smith, Tom Brownbill, Jackson Howard, Ben Walker and our young leaders Lucy Blower and

25

**8th Worthing Annual Report 2022**

Kathryn Briscoe as well as parent helpers for joining in with us and all other leaders in the group and the district that have shown immense support for us. The biggest thanks goes to Sam Rippon who took on the reigns of Section Leader with me to

run this troop and make the transition as smooth as possible. I really could not have done it without all the fantastic help and support.

## Osprey ESU

Osprey Unit Annual Report 2021/22

At the end of March this year, we had 35 invested Explorers. We continue to be one of the biggest Explorer Units in the UK. Osprey ESU continue in partnership with 8[th] Worthing and we appreciate the mutual benefits that being a part of the group bring. We have 24 members of the unit serving as Young Leaders within the group.

## **Core Programme**

The Unit’s core program contains two main elements:

The Chief Scouts (CS) Awards

Nautical Skills / Water Activities

Also central to the programme is the DofE Award:

Bronze – Platinum Award Silver – Diamond Award Gold – Queens Scout Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for anyone aged 1425. Founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956, there are 3 progressive levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. At each level participants undertake activities in 4 Sections:

**Volunteering** – undertaking service to individuals or the community Physical – improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities Skills – developing practical and social skills and personal interests Expedition – planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad

Gold programme participants must also do an additional 5th **Residential** section which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.

The DofE offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to learn about commitment, responsibility and independence. Gaining any one of the 3 levels of the DofE Award is a huge achievement.

We have had a successful year with these awards, seeing Osprey Explorers achieve:

- **10 x Bronze Awards** – Michael Edwards, Javier Marino, Samuel Mears, Ibrahim Sey, Jamie Bunce, Alex Walker, William Davies, Luke Morl, Josh Shanley, Logan Wheatley

**2 x Silver Awards** – Lucy Blower, Samuel Mears

Over the past 12 months, 34 current Explorers have actively worked towards their Bronze award and 10 of them have successfully passed, giving us a conversion rate of 30%. 4 current Explorers have actively worked towards their Silver with two passing, giving us a conversion rate of 50%.

All these have been achieved following our expeditions in October and we were able to restart a proper DofE programme following the 2-year hiatus. Now we are back to normal, hopefully we can build on this conversion rate.

Despite this, the average conversion rate for Bronze is 22% and Silver is 36% meaning we are above average for both levels.

As stated above, many of our participants carry out their Young Leader Training through Explorers and help with various sections in the Group to complete the Volunteering Section of their Award. Other activities include coaching sports such as football, swimming and netball, working on the Durrington Community Cycling Project and becoming a Young Leader in Guiding (instead of Scouting).

The participants also show their other abilities in the Physical Recreation and Skills Sections of the award:

The Physical Recreation section always includes a wide range of activities. At Bronze level, this has been playing football, dog walking, gym work, mountain biking, martial arts, running, golf, squash, triathlons, swimming, kayaking, ice skating, skateboarding, physical theatre, motorcross racing, cycling, paddleboarding, badminton, home workouts, watersports and netball. At Silver, the participants have been cycling, hiking, improving their general fitness and gym work.

The Skills section is always interesting as the Young People show what a wide variety of skills they have and what really interests them. At Bronze these include playing a variety of musical instruments such as the trombone, drums, guitar, trumpet, piano and clarinet, cooking, photography, engineering, model making, animal care, performing arts, drawing / painting, money management, windsurfing theory, learning a new language such as French and German, bike tricks, reading, sculpting and first aid. At Silver these include first aid, cooking, learning new languages such as Russian and Chinese, learning sign language, photography and model making.

We were able to get back to Expeditions this year and were able to get 18 Bronze Expeditions completed in either Small Dole or the New Forest as well as 7 Silver Expeditions completed in the New Forest.

The expeditions for this coming season are also underway with 11 Bronze participants, 10 Silver and 1 Gold who we have referred to one of our colleagues at the Chichester Open Centre so they can complete their expedition this year. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the Leaders who have helped our Explorers to achieve these awards – Jacky Green (exDofE Administrator), Paul Chaplain (Bronze Mentor / Expedition Leader), Lee Martin (Bronze Mentor / Deputy Expedition Leader), Andrew Shakespeare (Silver Expedition Leader), Kevin Lawrence (Gold Mentor / Expedition Leader), Steve Briscoe (Expedition Assistant / Assessor) Ben Rees (Expedition

Assistant), Jackson Howard (Expedition Assistant), Bryn Clements (Expedition Assistant), Richard Worsfold (Bronze Mentor), Lucy Poole (Bronze Mentor) and any others that have either acted as an Assessor or welcomed our Young Leaders into their Leadership teams.

## **Camps**

Port Scouts ran an Expedition Camp to get their Scouts their Chief Scout Gold Award. Due to the pandemic, unfortunately some Scouts were unable to achieve it before moving on to Explorers so 6 members went along to rectify that. Thank you to James Flint, Yvonne Barr, Andrew Shakespeare and anyone else from Port Scouts for organising.

4 Explorers and 2 Leaders joined up with the rest of the District in February to take part in an overnight world record attempt. They successfully achieved the record of Most Amount Of People Sleeping Outside At The Same Time.

Thank you to Al Chartres (District Commissioner / District Explorer Scout Commissioner) for organising the whole event and Lee and Kevin for leading the Osprey contingent.

We are currently planning for our first Summer Camp since 2019. It will be taking place from Saturday 23[rd] July – Saturday 30[th] July at Longridge, situated alongside the River Thames. Some of the activities planned are a water park, survival camp, weir trip, banquet, sailing, white-water rafting, Marlow treasure hunt, Osprey Challenge, laser tag, crate stacking, giant swing and aeroball.

We are also in the early stages of planning to go back to Switzerland in 2023 for 10 days along with the rest of Worthing District Explorers. We visited there in 2019 and can’t wait to get back!

## **Programme**

## **Events**

For our first year back to Remembrance Service since 2019, we had 22 Explorers and 5 Leaders. Thank you to Thomas Brownbill for the laying of the wreath, the 4 Explorers who helped to issue the Order of Service’s to the public and other attendees and to all the Young Leaders who stepped in to assist with the running of their other sections.

Paul organised and delivered an indoor canoeing session in December which 9 Explorers took part in. Not only did they learn some new skills for the kayak and enhance some that were pre-existing, they also all added time to their Time On The Water badges. Thank you to Paul for organising and Lee for assisting.

**Leadership Team** In September, we were very lucky to welcome Lucy Poole to the Osprey Leadership team. Lucy was originally a Guide but since turning 18, decided to make the move into Scouting (their loss is very much our gain!). Lucy was also a part of the production team for this year’s Worthing Gang Show and was vital in ensuring the dance numbers made it to the stage. Since arriving at Osprey, Lucy has fitted in seamlessly with the team. Unfortunately our Unit Treasurer, Jacky Green, made the decision to retire from Scouting after 36 years. On behalf of

Osprey, I would like to thank her for the years of dedication and time as an Assistant Explorer Scout Leader and Treasurer under Paul, Petula and lastly myself. You will be greatly missed.

In addition to that, Petula has decided to step down from the Unit. Petula joined Osprey in 2010 as an Assistant Explorer Scout Leader under Paul before replacing him as Explorer Scout Leader from 2016 – 2020. Since then, not only has Petula remained an integral part of the Osprey team as an AESL, but also Group Scout Leader for 8[th] Worthing, District Explorer Scout Leader and District Additional Needs Advisor for Worthing Scouts. Another diamond who will be greatly missed.

Lastly, thank you to the entire leadership team for making my first “normal” year of being Section Leader possible: Kevin Lawrence, Lee Martin, Lucy Poole, Paul Chaplain, Petula Bladen and Richard Worsfold. Thank you to Jacky Green for supporting DofE and managing the accounts. Thank you to all 8[th] Worthing Section Leaders and their teams for their support of the Young Leader programme and to all of our Explorers and their families for being a part of the adventure.

Looking forward to what the next 12 months has to offer for Osprey Explorer Unit!
