Annual General Meeting

10[th] Itchen (West End) Scout Group

17[th] June 2025 – 18.30 – Scout Hall

Reports for the Year 1[st] January 2024 to 31[st] December 2024

Reports from:

At the 2025 AGM, we report on 2024, which was our first full year for our Squirrel drey.

We increased our Squirrel numbers to 12 young people, supported by 3 Leaders and 2 Young Leaders.

We had a brilliant year, continuing to discover just how much we can fit into our hour each week. Our 12 Squirrels earned a whopping 206 badges, including an amazing 8 Chief Scout’s Acorn awards.

Some highlights of the year included growing our own potatoes, making cards and gifts for care home residents, our ambulance visit, visiting the allotment, decorating our tree at the Christmas tree festival, visiting the library and celebrating our 1st Birthday. We attended our first Hampshire Scouts Squirrels Fun Day at Ferny Crofts.

I’d like to finish by recognising all of the important people that make Squirrels happen. To our Squirrels- thank you for your enthusiasm and for always getting stuck in. To our parents- thank you for your support behind the scenes. Please keep sewing on those badges! To the committee- thank you for the work that you do behind the scenes for our Scout group. Thank you to Dan and the other leaders that have stepped in and helped us when needed.

A big thank you to Elizabeth and Amelia for helping us every week, making sure all of the Squirrels are fully involved and having lots of fun. Your extra pairs of hands are invaluable. Massive thanks must also go to Sam and Teresa.

Thank you to all of the Squirrel team for your time, energy and good humour. Your help and support planning and running our brilliant programme gives our Squirrels the best start in their Scouting journey.

Rebecca Taunton | Section Team Leader

After a short discussion with Dan, he convinced me that a change is as good as a rest, and so I have taken on the role of Section Leader, moving from the Scout Troop.

This new arrangement is working well and the Colony has grown from strength to strength following the leadership change; which was necessary following the launch of Squirrels.

During 2024 the Beaver Colony has enjoyed a varied programme of activities that have enabled our young people to learn new skills, go on adventures, work as a team, develop independence and confidence, make new friends and most importantly, have lots of fun.

A good number of Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards were earned, and hundreds of other badges too across a diverse programme covering everything from healthy eating and fitness, to team building and fire lighting.

I am pleased to say that Mandy has completed her Wood Badge, and we hope that will be signed off and presented soon.

We are currently planning a nights away experience, and this is only possible because of the experience and willingness of the volunteer team.

Thank you to our Beavers for your enthusiasm, your laughter and for getting involved. Thank you to our parents for all of your support behind the scenes and for helping us out when we ask.

Thank you to our Leaders Mandy, Tracy, Clare, Kate and Steve, and to our Young Will and Esme, you are all amazing.

Tracy and Clare are stepping back from volunteering and we thank them both for their service; and we are pleased to welcome Katie and Caroline into the Colony shortly.

Heather Pearce | Section Team Leader

2024 was another year with lots of activities for the cubs

The winter term started with kite making, cheese night and pancake night. We then had an evening of task master games and challenges. We invited the mothers for a mother’s day cup of tea and the cubs dazzled us with their entertainment skills.

The summer term saw a trip to the science museum, athletics badge at hatch grange, a beacon lighting and outdoor cooking.

In the Autumn term we had fires and nerf wars, village quiz and crafts. The most notable night was the evening we asked the cubs to bring items to fill shoe boxes to send to Ukraine for children to open at Christmas who had been victims of the conflict. We were so overwhelmed with your generosity that we filled more shoes boxes than we were expecting and they were greatly appreciated, so thank you.

The cubs had 3 opportunities for weekends away, indoors in January at Pauline lodge and then under canvas at district cub camp in July and at our group camp in the summer.

The cubs achieved a massive 265 badges between them last year from Martial arts, Navigator, collector, entertainer, to the good old faithful backwards cooking and 70 challenge badges 8 cubs achieved their Silver award the highest award you can reive as a cub before moving up to scouts.

Our numbers have stayed steady throughout last year, and we currently have 30 cubs with 10 new cubs joining us last year.

Our leadership team as ever have worked together, to deliver our programme and offer opportunities and adventures to these young people.

Karen, Rich, Angus, Sarah and Jason, thank you.

Shane, Jamie, Elizabeth our young leader team who are still giving up their time to come and help, thank you.

Wider team, thank you for cover and help when needed.

Grown ups of our cubs also thank you for your support, your patience and help when needed.

Sam Birks | Section Team Leader

Once again, we had an incredibly varied programme including some of the classics, like Team Challenges, Chip Shop Challenge, Hungry Hippos, and Scout Sprinkles. We had some skill-based evenings covering KASP, First Aid, Orienteering, and fire lighting. And as ever, we had some totally new evenings like international popcorn day, go-kart building, pasta making and Go Ape!

We also had the opportunity to join our group summer camp with the Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, and Explorers for a week of activities at Pinsent. There was so much going on throughout the week it’d be impossible to recall it all, but as ever, my resounding memory will be seeing the Scouts interacting with other young people from different sections to support, guide, and encourage them through their first nights away.

A personal favourite must be our new Christmas tradition, where the entire troop works together to prep, cook, serve, and of course eat a Christmas Dinner! This year we served nearly 40 people (and washed up) in under 2 hours. We’ve already planned it in for December…

Another highlight though was our trip to Andark for another new activity, Scuba diving. We went in 3 sessions, across 3 different evenings, over 3 different weeks to ensure as many people as possible had the opportunity to attend, and it was worth it.

2024 also saw 166 badges completed, including 9 Expedition Challenges following a weekend in the New Forest, and a Chief Scout Gold Award!

As ever, I can’t thank Dan, Damian, Max, James, Nick, Luke, and Morgan enough for their efforts in building a programme the Scouts clearly enjoy so much!

We’ve already got 2025 off to a great start with loads of new things, but our Summer Camp, which this year is being held on the Isle of Wight, will be our biggest adventure yet – but more about that next year.

Josh Robson | Section Team Leader

Wow, what another great year it has been for our Group. As you’ve just read, our busy sections have provided so many amazing opportunities for adventure, fun, friendship, and a chance to learn real world life skills.

2024 has been a year that has seen the Group stabilise, and also a year where we celebrated our 95[th] Anniversary.

The Squirrel Drey is thriving following the launch and we’ve seen our first Squirrels move on to Beavers with their Acorn Award.

The Beaver Colony is also doing very well with Heather as the new Section Leader and new Leaders Kate, Ben and Steve joining the team.

The Cub Pack remains a big and busy Section but we have deliberately reduced numbers a little to make sure that adventure can continue for all, in this relatively small space.

The Scout Troop is also a big and active Section, and numbers remain high, but manageable.

In August we held a very special Group Summer Camp to celebrate our 95[th] Anniversary, and it was great to see 7 Squirrels, 14 Beavers, 20 Cubs, 21 Scouts and 18 Explorers taking part and having a great time. I am already planning an event for our 100[th] in 2029.

Whilst it was a celebratory year for us, it was a year where we have seen a neighbouring Scout Group close completely, it makes me realise now more than ever how lucky we are here. We own our own building, and yes it can cost a lot to run, but it’s an asset, it’s a great place for adventure and skills, and it is legacy we still plan to improve.

We have taken specialist advice from an ecologist, and we have a solution, and we are moving ahead with our plans for a detached annexe. When I get some spare evenings over the school holiday, I will lodge our planning application. We will ask for your support.

With Thanks to All our Volunteers

To our Trustees, to Mike our Chair, to Sue our Treasurer, to Joe our Secretary and to Carrie, Justine, Lorraine and Louise, and to Tracy for auditing our accounts, thank you for your continued support.

To my Section Leaders, Rebecca, Heather, Sam, Josh and to Ken for leading the Chimera ESU, I say a huge thank you.

Our latest ‘Meet The Team’ poster shows the full scale of the team here, and it’s impressive. I thank them all, they’re amazing. What is also shows is that it’s a large and flexible team. Volunteering here is great fun, and it is not pressured. If you need a week off to attend an event, sure, we’re a big team and we help each other.

I am also particularly humbled by and grateful for our Young Leaders, they do so much, and the team keeps growing. I thank all my Young Leaders so very much; Amelia and Elizabeth who support the

Squirrels, Will and Esme who support the Beavers, Elizabeth, Jamie and Shane who support the Cubs, and Morgan and Luke who support the Scouts.

Although earlier this year, Luke turned 18 and we are thrilled he has taken up a Role in the Scout Troop.

So to our wonderful Leaders and Young Leaders who volunteer their time so freely… I say a massive ‘thank you’ for running such large, dynamic and busy Sections.

Finally, to all of you, our parents, our friends, the District Team and our supporters, thank you. We could not do all this without you.

We now look forward to another great year ahead.

Daniel Wiseman | Group Lead Volunteer
