LEIGH-ON –MENDIP RECREATION FIELD MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
CHAIR’S REPORT FOR AGM May 2024
We have had a busy and exciting year at the rec, with grants achieved from the National Lottery, the Garfield Weston Foundation, LoM Parish Council, Whatley Quarry, the Halecombe Community fund, the Sperring Charity, and the Somerset Association of Local Councils Health and Wellbeing Fund. We also benefitted from the sale of prints and paintings by Mike Bloxham , a special tea by author Lizzie Leigh and the Nursery Rhyme trail organised by Vik Batten
We are grateful to all our sponsors and all that helped within the village to put on events to raise funds for “THE CORONATION PARK” which is now open and giving pleasure to many of the young people in the village.,
This was a massive undertaking for our small committee and I would like to extend my gratitude to them for their dedication for this project and especially David who worked so hard to secure the grants.
One of the grants we had was used to buy hedging for areas in the park. We put out a plea for help to plant this and we were totally over whelmed by the number of villagers who came to help.
We still have more equipment to install in the park and this will be completed this summer.
Cricket
It is with great sadness that we learnt that the Leigh cricket team has folded. Cricket has been taking place for many decades on the Rec and I know I am not alone when I say we will miss it greatly.
Tuesday Night Bowls
Bowls on the rec. continued last summer, with a few more members joining in.
This is a fun session that anyone can join, it gives people the opportunity to meet new people get some gentle exercise and, most importantly, have fun!
If you would like to participate, it will start early May. Times 6.30 to 8pm Tuesday evenings.
Football
Coleford Athletic Youth Football Club are continuing to use the field and we are delighted to hear they will be making more use of the field next season and during the summer with 4 teams playing.
Fund Raising events
We have continued with our monthly bonus ball draw and we thank everyone that has contributed to this.
Vanessa very kindly ran the Wreath making workshop at Christmas, and people again went away with their wonderful creations.
Thanks also to Des and Wendy Worley for running the excellent, (if challenging!), quiz night.
Finance
Our finances are currently in a healthy position, but most of our reserves will be spent on the new park and community space.
Village Day
Due to the absence of the village fair last year the Rec. committee hosted a smaller event on the Rec. We are pleased to say that it had a lovely fun feel and I thank all that helped to make it so.
Events for your calendar
6[th] June Lighting of the beacon to celebrate D- day at dusk.
8[th] June Opening of Coronation Park , with special guest, BBQ and bar.
20[th] July village day.
11[th] August Family day and car rally.
Upkeep of the field
This continues to be a very big task especially with the addition of the Coronation park and the committee do their best to keep this in hand. We do however need and accept any help in this area. So if you have any spare time we would be very grateful for any help that is offered. Please just contact any member of the team for job suggestions. There are a lot of things going on behind the scenes, such as all the secretarial jobs completed by David, financial affairs completed by Denis and general maintenance of the field and club house completed by the committee and fellow villagers. Also thanks to Frank who continues to do a lot of the donkey work at the Rec and to Matthew Bennett that pushes his trusty mower over the park and pump track.
Dogs
A polite reminder that the Rec is a DOG ON LEAD AREA ONLY sadly there are some people who think this rule does not apply to them.
We kindly ask that all dogs are on leads and dog mess is picked up in the rec. field and everywhere else in the village.
Thank yous to:-
Vanessa Barnes and all her family for continuing with the wreath making workshops at Christmas. To All that helped plant the hedging.
To All that helped at the village day
To All that have helped organise events
All those that pick up rubbish and generally care about the Rec.
