As with many other tyganistions, we are continuing to get to grips with the Thew post pandemic W0￿d. After much debate
in Council ￿Jr 2022'SprinB' Conference wa5 again held wrtually. With 319 participants lup from 302 in 20211, the
tonference began. ¢y rhe evening of Friday 08104122. with the cran￿)k Memorial Lecture.. 'Warriors, Wildlife and
W(xnen-. Big Cat Conservation in TanzaNa and Be¥￿￿1.. given by PTof. Amy ￿"£kman, fhrector of the Wildlife Con5erYation
Unit, University of Oxford_ As usual, the c(M)ference included a full programme with a wide range of excellent talks and
rapid fire. sessions on the Saturday. The twelve talks included'when is a d(xmouse eNlangered?' and'marine mammal
rnoustaches.. the form and funtti￿ of diverse aquatic whiskers,. The sixteen'rapid fire. 5e55ions ranged from 'Other
mammals at badgers. setts. to'The Oarwin Tree Project.. A new k4atforrn for understanding our biodiversitrf. Following
the AGM on Sunday morni￿. we had 45 minute workshop sessions. with three options running concurrently ID each.
We returned to an in person'Annual' Conference. successf1￿lY held at Nottingham Trent University, in August 2023.

Conservation Trust IGWCTI. the James Hutton Institule IJHII and Naturescot in 2021, we promoted the use ol Mammal
MapkEr by vdvnteers to record Sbghtin8s, and COnd￿t transect surw. of mountain hare (Lepus tJmidus1 in Scotland.
Additional functionality was added to Mammal Mapper to allow the rec(*thne of eround nesting birds. and paper fomis
prowded in case of technol￿ lirnrtations.
Harvest mouse Inationwidel
The harvest mouse SUn￿V initsaled in 2021 prO￿d wjwlar with ¥dunteers and local Broups, and a report presenting
the methodology and results of the first sur4ty was dissemtnated to all participants. along with interpreted local dat3
rèports for engagèd gr￿pS that requested this. Trainings were offered to Ic(al grc#Jps on surneytechnioues in preparation
for the 2022-23 suTr*wng Seas￿ (October 2022- March 20231 which We￿ extremely warmly received. and indicatlOn5
are that the￿ was even rn0￿ local e￿agement this year. We plan to repeat this 5uThey annually and in time to be
kxesent a populati￿ distribution rnap for the Britlsh Isle5 as a result ol this [￿JeCt.
Greater White Toothed Shrew- Searching For Slwews
Thanks to our active cornmunity of nature champions and lttal groltp members. ewdence was identified and confirmed of
the presence of the invasive Greaier White TC￿thed Shrew in Britain for the first time_ Local mammal group member and
ecologist lan Bond identified the species in è ptrxxo of a at-predated specimen submitted ty supporter Melissa Young,
and then proceeded to ¢c¥￿UCt DNA tesring on the remains to confirm this. Mammal Society 5prun8 inio action bv
launching the'searching for Shrews. projecl. calling lor any and all sightings of shrews to be recorded wa Mammal
Mapper to improve our ability to tTrck and emdence the spread of this potentially destructive invasive species.

Mammal Mapper app

way of recordin8 data. anLI we had 23,452 ￿COrdS submitted by l.GOJ unique users recorded in 2022, cornpared to
21.CK)O in 2021. As well as being resFon5ive to prioritie5 in our ca115 to artion fw u5et5 of the app le8 Searching FOT
Shrews). we introduced new functionality in the form of a 'wild boar carcass alert. in reSP￿tse to the risk of exotic
disease5 such as African Swine Fever IASFI. which is spreading across Europe. Records generate an Immediate alert
email to APHA so that the record tan be examined and if there is suspicion of disease in the UK. or APHA receive
multiple dead sightings, then vetinary staff can wsit the carcass and sample it lor disease.
National Beaver Database
Mammal Society have been cornmissioned by Natural EnRland to de￿lop an onl1r￿ portal to uTrttrdate beaver data.
to support strategic beaver conservation efforts by Natur31 England and the Enwirorwnent Agency. The portal has been
specified and build is underway pending launch in 2023.

membership of the Society. We encourage the use of systematic recording- particularfy using the Mammal Mapper app
camera trapping also always pro%Es a F¢)pular appToach. Beth Smith, formerly our Informati￿ Officer. has
recruited students across the UK to take part and has also iThtiated a new series of online stLMJent blogs. on the Mammal
Society website. about their research.

Djring the year ended 31 Decernber 2022 Mrs J Pressland was paid a salary of £22.25412021.. £21.3981.
Mrs J Pre55land is a related party as She is the wife of Mr R D p￿$S13nd, a trustee. Mrs Pre5sland resigned
in Febrvary 2023.

Mr R PresslarKI resigned as a trustee and honorary treasurer at the No%tmber 2021 Council rneeli￿.
hawng completed six years as a trvstee, in accordance with the S￿le￿$ gO￿rnanCe rules. Council then
voted to Co-opt Mr R Pressland to continue a5 a trustee and honorary treasurer, until the AGM planned
for April 2022. as. de5Plte a year lo￿ 5eareh with appropriate advertisements for the role. no sulta￿e
replacement candidate ha5 ￿en forthcoming. The situation had not chan8ed by the AGM and Counal
38ain C￿opted Mr R Pre551and to continue to an EGM planned for later in 2022. The EGM specifically
to put to Members a vote to change the SLKieWs Articles to allow. on annual vote by Mernbers at the
annual AGM. for IK)th the honorary treasurer arKJ secretary rdes to ektend annually beyond the
current consecutive six year temi limit. where no suitable ￿plaCement trustee has been found. Oue to
likely13ck of numbers lor a very brief EGM. it was decided to hold things over to the 2023 AGM. Again,
due to likely low numbers attending. which was the case in June 2023 AGM, the EGM was postponed,
ntil the ScKietys Annual Cmference held. in person. at Nottirygham Trent University in August 2023.
Mr Pressland, meanwhile, continued to serve as Treasurer. c(FOPted by Covnol. The change to the
Articles was passed by vote at the AGM. Mr R Pressland continue5 to 5er¥e as honorarytreasurer until a
further wte at the nexr AGM.
