THE CHISWICK CHOIR REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES 2022-23

The Chiswick Choir is a registered charity, number 278765, whose objectives are ‘to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities’.

In 2021, the choir rebranded as West London Chorus, although Chiswick Choir remains its registered and legal name.

The trustees for the year were A Speakman (Chair, appointed October 2016), S Everton (Hon Secretary, appointed Sept 2015 to March 2023), P Wickstead, (Hon Secretary, appointed April 2023) and S Richards (Hon Treasurer, appointed October 2011). Other committee members were M Fei, C Williams, S Von Bismarck, G Cuming, B Barker, S Chandler, P Evans, W Johnson, L Chalker and J Rolt. The rehearsal accompanist was Marija Struckova and the Music Director Hilary Campbell.

Concert Programme

The first concert on 3 December at St Michael & All Angels W4 1TT was the Mozart Requiem, with soloists K Trethewey, M McLorinan, J Robinson and S O’Hara, organist R Harker and the British Sinfonietta . The concert on 1 April, also at St Michael & All Angels, was entitled Psalms, Songs & Seasons, featuring Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs and McDowall’s A Time for all Seasons . The soloist was N Bennet, and the instrumentalists were A Denholm, I Shaw, O Butterworth, M Struckova and K Holmes. Our summer concert on 1 July at St Paul’s Church W4 3SD celebrated the King’s Coronation, with music by Bruckner, Walton, Parry, Elgar, Rutter, Holst and Britten, supported by Bella Tromba and M Butterfield.

Financial Report

The choir’s bank account is held with Santander, with a deposit account with the COIF Charities Deposit Fund.

Scholarship Scheme

Four annual scholarships worth £900 each and open to singers aged 18-30, or students in full or part time music education were offered. Thanks to sponsorship, we were able to award two soprano scholarships.

Friends of the choir are our regular supporters, receiving the benefit of tickets for each concert and an invitation to the annual Chiswick Choir and Friends’ party for paying an annual subscription.

Sponsors in 2022/23 were Forte Arts, Whitman &Co, Anthony Roberts and Fuller Smith & Turner plc.

Members’ subscriptions remained at £195 if paid once a year, £200 for members paying twice yearly and £210 if subscriptions are paid each term.

The choir finished the year with funds of £16,724. The membership subscription will be increased for 2023/24 although that for the Friends will be unchanged.

We are most grateful for the generosity of all our friends, sponsors and members of the choir.

Sheila Richards, Hon Treasurer
