THE CHISWICK CHOIR REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES 2020-21

The Chiswick Choir is a registered charity, number 278765, whose objectives are ‘to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities’.

The trustees for the year were A Speakman (Chair, appointed October 2016), S Everton (Hon Secretary, appointed Sept 2015) and S Richards (Hon Treasurer, appointed October 2011). Other committee members were Mary Fei, C Williams, A Mercer, A Krajewski, G Cuming, M Violentano, B Barker, C Ashford-Russell and J Rolt. The rehearsal accompanists was Maria Struckova, and the Music Director was Hilary Campbell.

Concert Programme

Once again, the Covid pandemic disrupted our programme. Thirty members of the choir sang in a socially-distanced concert of Chilcott’s On Christmas Night in December at St Michael & All Angels W4 1TT. This was streamed to the choir. We were unable to hold either of the remaining two concerts.

Non-Concert Choir Activities

Government guidelines relating to the pandemic meant that most of our rehearsals continued on Zoom, although we were able to hold a few live rehearsals prior to the December concert, with members socially distanced and singing in masks.

Financial Report

The choir’s bank account is held with Santander, with a deposit account with the COIF Charities Deposit Fund. We received two generous legacies from deceased choir members, and shall use one to fund a Composition Competition and the other towards recording a CD in the next financial year.

Scholarship Scheme

Four annual scholarships worth £900 each and open to singers aged 18-30, or students in full or part time music education were offered. As the scholars had not had their usual opportunities, the holders continued in post for a further year.

Friends of the choir are our regular supporters, receiving the benefit of tickets for each concert and an invitation to the annual Chiswick Choir and Friends’ party for paying an annual subscription.

Sponsors in 2020/21 were Killik & Co (platinum sponsor), Horton and Garton, Fuller Smith & Turner plc, Cote Brasserie and Chiswick Herald. Several of the sponsors assisted the choir through provision of services rather than cash.

Members’ subscriptions remained at £195 if paid once a year, £200 for members paying twice yearly and £210 if subscriptions are paid each term.

The choir finished the year with funds of £60,418. The membership and Friends’ subscriptions for 2021/22 will be unchanged.

We are most grateful for the generosity of all our friends, sponsors and members of the choir.

Sheila Richards, Hon Treasurer
