and procedures to manage them.

The Orchestra appoints a professional Musical Director and Concertmaster. Currently Philip Ellis and Annmarie McDade.

There is a Programming Committee planning for future concerts. Members in 2024/2025 were Philip Ellis, Hilary Plaskett, Gillian Herbert, and Jennie Burtsell

The Trustees have considered the matter of risks and there appear to be none of major significance. The orchestra maintains a sufficient financial reserve to cover a late cancellation of a concert due to unforeseen circumstances. The Orchestra maintains an insurance policy against third party liabilities with a limit of £5,000,000 for any one accident.

Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the
charity set out in its governing
document
Summary of the main activities
undertaken for the public
benefit in relation to these
objects (include within this
section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit)
Aims and Objectives -The Objects of the Society are to promote,
improve, develop and maintain
1) Education and training in orchestral performance.
2) Public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in
all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals and in
such other ways as the Society, through its committee, may determine.
In planning our activities, the Trustees kept in mind the Charity Commissions
guidance on public benefit at our meetings. The focus of our activities is to
promote the art and science of music through participation in and presentation of
public concert performances.
Each concert is preceded by at least five rehearsals and a final rehearsal on the
concert day.
When performing at Holy Trinity Guildford the church hall remains open to the
public during the final rehearsal opening the door to the passing general public,
including children, in order that they may experience a taste of the orchestral
activity. There are reduced price tickets for those 21 years and under.
2024/2025 was the first year that Gill Herbert was the Chair of the
Trustees following the resignation of Jo wood at last year’s AGM.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Since his appointment in 2023 Philip Ellis has led the orchestra through varied, interesting and demanding programmes and is very popular with the orchestra. Annmarie McDade is a popular and enthusiastic leader. The orchestra has performed well and there have been memorable performances from our guest soloists The orchestra could not function without the enthusiastic support of the players who participate in our rehearsals and perform in the concerts. Recruitment of strings and woodwind has remained good, and Alison Wyld has developed a reliable horn membership. Next year we hope to develop membership of trumpets and trombones who will participate in rehearsals as appropriate.
