2. Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document

The objects of the Society are to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities.

Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.

We welcome Members aged 16 and above from a wide range of backgrounds who are able to pass a simple voice test.

We enable our Members to participate in a creative, fulfilling, educational and sociable activity and provide opportunities for them to develop their singing technique, musical skills and knowledge of a wide range of choral repertoire from Baroque to 21[st] Century.

We promote public concerts, typically three per year in Ealing or other London venues, all of which are widely publicised and admission to which is open to all. These concerts provide our audiences with enjoyable and stimulating cultural experiences through the high quality of the performances and the interesting range of music featured. We occasionally tour to other venues (both in the UK and abroad) aiming to share our performances with other communities.

We regularly perform to raise funds in support of other charitable causes.

We perform on certain occasions for residents/patients, families and staff of our local hospice and senior living establishments.

From time to time, we commission and perform new choral works which extend the musical repertoire available for choirs.

From time to time, we provide opportunities for local school children to participate in choral singing at some of our concerts, thus broadening the musical experience of the pupils.

Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit

The Trustees are mindful of the guidance on public benefit by the Charity Commission, as expressed in Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011.

We make particular effort to raise our profile in the local and wider community in order to make more people aware of the Society and the events it puts on.

The concerts promoted by the Society are open to all members of the public at a reasonable price, with concessions and reduced prices for under 18s made available where possible.

Membership of the Society is available to anyone 16 years and above who can demonstrate their ability to contribute to the Society’s aims.

Concessionary subscription rates are available, particularly for those under 30, and a bursary scheme provides free membership to qualifying young people aged 16-23.

3. Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.

Our summer concert on 21 June 2025 at St Barnabas Church Ealing was entitled The Isle of Song, taking the audience on a musical journey around the British Isles. It celebrated the living, breathing heritage of British song throughout the ages, featuring music by British composers and songwriters (including Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Holst, Queen and The Beatles). The repertoire ranged from simple folk songs to works in a grander style, exploring the song traditions of our green and pleasant land, and affording the opportunity for some choir members to sing solo parts. We were accompanied by our pianist Charles Economou. The concert was well attended by an audience of 300. It was especially rewarding for the choir to explore works from different genres, with many pieces not previously performed by Ealing Choral Society. We were awarded a grant by the Pitshanger Community Association (PCA) during the reporting period, enabling us to offer a number of free tickets for this concert to community organisations within Ealing, with the aim of reaching out to those who might not otherwise attend a choral concert, providing a new musical experience and hopefully ongoing interest, as well as diversifying our audiences.

We reprised our June concert (with additional works by Stanford and Haydn) on a hugely enjoyable and successful choir tour to Bournemouth in July, performing at Wimborne Minster on the 5 July 2025. Around half the choir participated in the tour, together with our Director of Music and pianist, as well as associates, family and friends. The concert was free, with an audience of 200, and the retiring collection raised £1201 for the Wimborne Minster Music Foundation. A highlight for many was the audience waving their arms and singing along to the final bars of Hey Jude !

We organised a Come and Sing Day on the 13th September 2025 at Haven Green Baptist Church Ealing, singing Fauré’s Requiem and Handel’s Zadok the Priest, expertly led by our Director of Music Peter Asprey who delivered a fantastic experience for participants. The event was attended by 42 ECS members, who volunteered their help, and 108 non-ECS participants from the local community and beyond. We were joined by 2 soloists and an organist. The retiring collection following the free concert held at the end of the day raised £453 for the Help Musicians charity. The event was supported by a grant from the Pitshanger Community Association to encourage outreach into our community.

Our autumn concert on 15 November 2025 at St Barnabas Church Ealing featured works for the season of remembrance – the UK premiere of Jessica French’s Strengthen for Service , Haydn’s Paukenmesse (Mass in time of war) and Matthew Coleridge’s Requiem. A memorable experience for the choir was a rehearsal via zoom with Jessica French, who is based in Seattle, to hear her speak about her music and guide our rehearsal. As the performance was a UK premiere we recorded it professionally at the concert, and it is available to watch on our YouTube channel. We were joined by the Orpheus Sinfonia, along with four soloists and an organist. The concert was a great success, attended by an audience of 320.

On 13 December 2025, we held our annual Christmas Carol Concert at St Barnabas Church Ealing, in aid of Bereft Bereavement Support, a local charity providing specialist bereavement counselling and support for the adult residents of the London Borough of Ealing. Once again this carol concert was attended by a sell-out audience of 390 and generated a profit of £7,000 for Bereft Bereavement Support . Also during December 2025, smaller groups of volunteer singers drawn from the choir sang carols at Pitzhanger Manor, the PCA Senior Citizens Tea Party, Ealing Riding Stables (for riders and their families) and Meadow House Hospice (for staff, relatives and patients, raising £1,200 for the hospice). All these Christmas events were much enjoyed by audience and singers alike.

Our spring concert on 14 March 2026 at the Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square was a performance of Bach’s Magnificat in D, Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum, and Mozart’s Litaniae Lauretanae, accompanied by The Hanover Band and five soloists. The audience of over 700 were very

appreciative of the performance. During the rehearsal period the choir benefitted from a workshop on the Magnificat given by Jonathan Sells, an international concert and opera singer, artistic director, and conductor.

We are very pleased to have increased our Membership levels during the reporting period to 115 members, including 21 new members (4 of whom are under the age of 24) who joined during the year.

During the reporting period, 7 members under the age of 24 benefitted from our bursary scheme, providing them with free membership, and a further 6 members benefitted from reduced subscription rates for those under 30.

held		 We believe it is prudent to have sufficient amounts in hand in our
unrestricted general funds to cover our commitments, as well as
any unexpected losses, and also to enable future planning.
Our current policy is to maintain unrestricted general funds
between £20,000 and £30,000.
The Trustees carefully monitor the financial situation to ensure that
each forward programme will be fundable and decide if any
changes in reserves policy are necessary.
Amount of reserves
held		 At the end of the financial year the Society’s reserves stood at
£77,712. Of this, £10,000 has been allocated to a designated fund
for a large scale concert, £3,000 to a fund to refresh our website,
and £1,661 to a designated bursary fund providing free
membership to those under 24 years.
Whilst our overall unrestricted general reserves (£63,051) are
greater than specified in our policies, the Society’s aim is to utilise
these reserves in future seasons, in pursuance of our charitable
aims of concert giving and related activities.

Financial Controls We have the following measures to ensure compliance with the
Charity Commission’s guidance of internal financial controls for
charities:-

Annual budgets are prepared and approved by the Trustees.

Financial management information is discussed by the
Trustees at regular meetings.

As required by law, the annual accounts are subject to
Independent Examination.

The Society does not make grants to any third parties.
•
All payments from the Society’s operating bank accounts
require approval by two signatories on the accounts.

Expenses are reimbursed only in cases where an individual has
incurred the expenses in the course of carrying out the
Society’s business and with prior agreement of the Society’s
appointed Treasurer.

5. Structure, Governance and Management

Note 1 Basis of preparation

1.1 Basis of accounting

These accounts have been prepared on an accruals basis. Most transactions arise and are completed within the active season (September to June). The financial year ends on 31[st] May, and when concerts are scheduled during the following June the relevant concert transactions are attributed to the next financial year, and may be accrued. Other transactions concerning the whole season, e.g. rehearsal costs, are attributed to the financial year ending before the end of the season.

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts.

The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.

1.2 Going concern

There are no uncertainties related to events or conditions that cast significant doubt on the charity's ability to continue as a going concern.

1.3 Change of accounting policy

The accounts present a true and fair view and no changes have been made to the accounting policies adopted previously.

1.4 Changes to accounting estimates

No changes to accounting estimates have occurred in the reporting period.

1.5 Material prior year errors

No material prior year errors have been identified in the reporting period.

2.1 Reconciliation with previous generally accepted accounting practice

There has been no requisite change in accounting policies following first time adoption of FRS 102. Bursary transactions are shown as transfers of funds for 2025 and 2026. No other figures have changed. No reconciliations are required.

2.2 Income

Recognition of income

These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:

Offsetting

There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.

Grants and donations

Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met.

Legacies

Legacies are included in the SoFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the charity or have been met.

Tax reclaims on donations and gifts

Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.

Support costs

The charity has not incurred expenditure on support costs.

Employees

The charity does not have any employees.

Volunteer help

The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts. The Society receives voluntary help from its Members and Supporters in the form of serving on the Committee or Sub-Committees, providing assistance to Committee Members (e.g. for Publicity, Concert Management and Social Events tasks) and performing other key roles (e.g. Associates Secretary, Ticket Secretary, Website Administrator). Approximately 45 to 55 volunteers are involved in the running of the Society each season.

Trustees

Trustees did not receive reimbursement for personal expenses during 2026 (2025: Nil). The only payments made to Trustees are reimbursements against receipts from non-related suppliers of goods or services used wholly for the aims of the Society. They are included in general expenditure under the appropriate headings.

~ Legacy from the Estate of Dr Shane Beadle (former ECS Chairman), for a large scale concert. £1,000 of this was allocated to the Come and Sing event, but was not used as the event broke even. So the Fund remains at £10,000.

This will be utilised to refresh the ECS website, with updates to style and functionality.

Note 19 Funds received as an agent

This refers to income and expenditure administered in respect of other charities/organisations during the financial year. These are not included in the Statement of Financial Activities or the Balance Sheet.

a) OneStage Tour Agents and Neo Restaurant

As part of the tour to Bournemouth/Wimborne Minster on the 4[th] to 6[th] July 2025, the choir collected £24,340 from 48 singers (including 2 Associates) and 17 additional tour participants (spouses/partners including 6 Associates). The full amount was used to pay OneStage Tour Agents and Neo Restaurant (Group Meal) for lodgings and subsistence and there are no outstanding balances.

b) Help Musicians Charity

A retiring collection on behalf of the Help Musicians charity was held following the concert at the end of the Come and Sing event on the 13th September 2025. This raised £453 which was transferred to the charity.

c) Bereft Bereavement Support

The choir performed a carol concert in December 2025 in support of Bereft Bereavement Support, a local charity providing specialist bereavement counselling and support for the adult residents (the over 16s) of the London Borough of Ealing.

Bereft Bereavement Support also collected an additional net income of £2,926 in advertising and donations for this event. The event therefore raised £7,000 (£4,074+£2,926) for Bereft Bereavement Support.
