Objectives and Activities** ## **Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document** The objects of the Society are to educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities. ## **Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.** We welcome Members aged 16 and above from a wide range of backgrounds who are able to pass a simple voice test. We enable our Members to participate in a creative, fulfilling, educational and sociable activity and provide opportunities for them to develop their singing technique, musical skills and knowledge of a wide range of choral repertoire from Baroque to 21[st] Century. We promote public concerts, typically three per year in Ealing or other London venues, all of which are widely publicised and admission to which is open to all. These concerts provide our audiences with enjoyable and stimulating cultural experiences through the high quality of the performances and the interesting range of music featured. We occasionally tour to other venues (both in the UK and abroad) aiming to share our performances with other communities. We regularly perform to raise funds in support of other charitable causes. We perform on certain occasions for residents/patients, families and staff of our local hospice and senior living establishments. From time to time, we commission and perform new choral works which extend the musical repertoire available for choirs. From time to time, we provide opportunities for local school children to participate in choral singing at some of our concerts, thus broadening the musical experience of the pupils. ## **Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit** The Trustees are mindful of the guidance on public benefit by the Charity Commission, as expressed in Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011. We make particular effort to raise our profile in the local and wider community in order to make more people aware of the Society and the events it puts on. The concerts promoted by the Society are open to all members of the public at a reasonable price, with concessions and reduced prices for under 18s made available where possible. Membership of the Society is available to anyone 16 years and above who can demonstrate their ability to contribute to the Society’s aims. Concessionary subscription rates are available, particularly for those under 30, and a bursary scheme provides free membership to qualifying young people aged 16-23. 3 ## **3. Achievements and Performance** **Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.** Our summer concert on 22 June 2024 at St Barnabas Church Ealing comprised:- the _Missa Tiburtina_ , Giles Swayne’s angry setting of the Mass reflecting on how humanity is destroying our world and ignoring the poor; _Tunes for Archbishop Parker’s Psalter_ , Tallis’s simple psalm settings interspersed between movements of the Swayne Mass; in a lighter vein Chilcott’s _Little Jazz Mass_ for choir, double bass and piano; followed by jazz composer George Shearing’s settings of ‘ _Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare_ ’. We were joined by four soloists, a pianist and a double bassist. The concert was well attended by an audience of 300. It was especially rewarding for the choir to learn and perform pieces not previously performed by Ealing Choral Society. Our autumn concert on 16 November 2024 at St Barnabas Church Ealing featured Howard Goodall’s _Eternal Light: A Requiem_ , intended for the living, creating a sense of solace amidst the inevitable loss accompanying death. For this concert we were joined by the London Mozart Players, along with three soloists, a harpist, an organist and keyboard players. The programme also included Vaughan Williams’ _Five Mystical Songs_ and anthems by Stanford and Bairstow, which afforded the opportunity for some choir member to sing solo parts. The concert was a huge success, attended by a sell-out audience of 390. We were awarded a grant by the Pitshanger Community Association (PCA) during the reporting period, enabling us to offer free tickets to community organisations within Ealing with the aim of reaching out to those who might not otherwise attend a choral concert, providing a new musical experience and hopefully ongoing interest, as well as diversifying our audiences. 23 free tickets were given out for this concert. We also held a retiring collection for the Ealing Churches Winter Night Shelter (ECWNS, an organisation providing the borough’s homeless with food, a safe and warm space to sleep and companionship, every night from November to March each year). This collection for ECWNS raised £990. On 14 December 2024, the Society gave its annual Christmas Carol Concert at St Barnabas Church Ealing, in support of The Store Cupboard, a local charity providing much needed food and support for people in our local community. Once again the concert was attended by a sell-out audience of 390 and generated a profit of £9,031 for The Store Cupboard. Also during December 2024, smaller groups of volunteer singers drawn from the choir sang carols at Ealing Broadway centre (raising £100 for Ealing Foodbank), the PCA Senior Citizens Tea Party, Ealing Riding Stables (for riders and their families) and Meadow House Hospice (for staff, relatives and patients, raising £700 for the hospice). All these Christmas events were much enjoyed by audience and singers alike. Our spring concert on 15 March 2025 at the Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square was a performance of Haydn’s _The Creation_ , accompanied by the City of London Symphonia and three soloists. It was wonderful to perform to an audience of 730 and hear their appreciation of the concert. We gave 49 free tickets for this concert to community organisations within Ealing, enabled by the PCA grant mentioned previously. We were delighted to be asked by the Mayor of Ealing to sing _I vow to thee my country_ at the VE day lighting of the beacon ceremony in Walpole Park on the 8[th] May 2025. We are very pleased to have increased our Membership levels during the reporting period to 109 members, including 17 new members (3 of whom are under the age of 24) who joined during the year. During the reporting period, 7 members under the age of 24 benefitted from our bursary scheme, providing them with free membership, and a further 4 members benefitted from reduced subscription rates for those under 30. 4 ## **4. unrestricted general funds to cover our commitments, as well as

each forward programme will be fundable and if any changes in

Whilst our overall unrestricted general reserves (£70,240) are
greater than specified in our policies, the Society’s aim is to utilise
these reserves in future seasons, in pursuance of our charitable

Charity Commission’s guidance of internal financial controls for

Most transactions arise and are completed within the active season (September to June). The financial year ends on 31[st] May, and when concerts are scheduled during the following June the relevant concert transactions are attributed to the next financial year, and may be accrued. Other transactions concerning the whole season, e.g. rehearsal costs, are attributed to the financial year ending before the end of the season. These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. The accounts have been prepared in accordance with: - the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 16 July 2014 - the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) - and with the Charities Act 2011. The charity constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102. ## **1.2 Going concern** There are no uncertainties related to events or conditions that cast significant doubt on the charity's ability to continue as a going concern. ## **1.3 Change of accounting policy** The accounts present a true and fair view and no changes have been made to the accounting policies adopted previously. ## **1.4 Changes to accounting estimates** No changes to accounting estimates have occurred in the reporting period. ## **1.5 Material prior year errors** No material prior year errors have been identified in the reporting period. ## **Note 2 Accounting policies** ## **2.1 Reconciliation with previous generally accepted accounting practice** There has been no requisite change in accounting policies following first time adoption of FRS 102. Bursary transactions are shown as transfers of funds for 2024 and 2025. No other figures have changed. No reconciliations are required. Page 3 of 11 **Ealing Choral Society: Registered Charity No. 278174 Year ended 31 May 2025** ## **Section C: Notes to the Accounts** ## **2.2 Income** ## **Recognition of income** These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when: - the charity becomes entitled to the resources - it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources - the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability ## **Offsetting** There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102. ## **Grants and donations** Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria are met. ## **Legacies** Legacies are included in the SoFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the charity or have been met. ## **Tax reclaims on donations and gifts** Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the terms of the appeal have specified otherwise. ## **Support costs** The charity has not incurred expenditure on support costs. ## **Employees** The charity does not have any employees. ## **Volunteer help** The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts. The Society receives voluntary help from its Members and Supporters in the form of serving on the Committee or Sub-Committees, providing assistance to Committee Members (e.g. for Publicity, Concert Management and Social Events tasks) and performing other key roles (e.g. Associates Secretary, Ticket Secretaries, Website Administrator). Approximately 45 to 55 volunteers are involved in the running of the Society each season. ## **Trustees** Trustees did not receive reimbursement for personal expenses during 2025 (2024: Nil). The only payments made to Trustees are reimbursements against receipts from non-related suppliers of goods or services used wholly for the aims of the Society. They are included in general expenditure under the appropriate headings. A fund-raising Quiz Evening has been held regularly for many years. In the 2023-2024 season the Society also held a party to celebrate its 60[th] Anniversary. Replacement card reader and overhead lights for St Barnabas concerts in 2024-2025. # Honorary Treasurers’ Forum, Making Music and EAL (Ealing Arts and Leisure). ## **Note 10 Website Design and Build Depreciation** The cost of the design and build of the website is considered capital expenditure, which has been depreciated by a third over three years, reaching zero value at the end of the 2023-2024 season. ## **Note 11 Transfers between Funds** The Bursary Fund is a designated unrestricted fund. It is an allocation of general income made by the Trustees, effectively to pay the subscriptions of suitable young members, aged 23 and under. During the financial year 2024-2025, there were 7 payments, totalling £300, from the Bursary Fund to the General fund. The grant of £933 from the Pitshanger Community Association was transferred from the Restricted Fund to the General fund. ## **Note 12 Equipment and Music** Equipment owned includes staging, scores, glasses and carol books. No further depreciation was applied to staging, scores, and glasses this year as all items had reached zero value in previous years. The Society owns 9 carol books which have a market value of £14 each. These are not included in the Statement of Financial Activities or the Balance Sheet. ## **a) The Store Cupboard** Ealing Choral Society performed a carol concert in December 2024 in support of The Store Cupboard, a local not-for-profit project providing affordable food and support for those in need in our community.
