In the year 202314 the Law Centr dealt wilh 431 new elw, across cw Peckham aud Lewisha]n offices. In 202Y3 the
number trf cases had atmost doubled largely beca￿fje of the of Larnbeth 8nd Southwark tenanis going kn Court
for possession hearing& after the eviction ban was lifted. Thi5 w&s putting a significani strain on the l￿u$lng team and on
resourc&%. In June 2023 the Law Centre IcaTned that it had been unSucco￿ful in the reapplication to tun tht duty scheme
at Clerkenwell Court. Th¢ L£Eal Aid contrdct was awanled to 2 private practice fllTh of solicito￿. Sinc¢ this date rhe
number of cascs the lkn)u5it]g t&4rn is seeing has rethKed to a maTWle level and the Law Centre cm explore
ways to rwh tenants with rarlier advice. Litiked to thi& the Law Centre ￿e1ved fimding from the GLA via Londo
Legal Support Trust and from the Access to Justice Found￿10￿ which enabl￿ the houstng team to Set up a telephone
advice l]ne for wple facingp)&%&&sion hearings.

EmploymenVDiscrlmlnatioD
In 202314 the Law CentsE provided advice in 34 employment c&%4 conunuing to provith a regular telephone outr¢A¢h
session for Client5 referred by Citizens Advitt Southwark. Although the Law Centre holds a Legal Aid c4)ntrdcr for
discTimination, the lack of legal aid for a350ciated matters such as unfa]r dismissal makes this area of work extrelnely
challenging. FurKling to provide representation at Tribunals is not available and Tnany of our clients are not able to
represent thcmstlves. Without the ￿ndIng from the Southwark Council contrart the LAW Centre would not be able to
provide this area of law.

has been set up involving frontline agencies atKI l¢xal parcnts.
(￿￿ approach has be¢n to build on ihe knowledg¢ and expertise already ￿Sent within the comnwnity. Funding has been
secured Fro￿ the Bariug Fi>undation for ihe Law cen￿ to act as a legal hub for education issues. Over the last ycar we
have providBd a number of education rights tsaining sessions on a)ras such as education rights for the Traveller
comlnunity. We are also gateful to The Ltgal Edwation Fund who fund a projecl which is n]n in partnetship with the
S¢xial Iniegration Regenerdtion Group, a froniline community agency which trnins community mentors to support and
ernpower parents.
Communlty Cxre
Th¢ Law Centre callie5 Out comrnunity caTe WO￿ particularty in the areas of homel￿nESS alld Eection 17, 5UPPOrt for
de*l￿te familie5 who have been given Recour5C to Public Funds. (NRPF) staDJ5 because of problems with their
itnmigrdtion status. Seciion 17 of th¢ Children Art 1989 (S.17) gives local authorities tlte power to provide
accommodation a￿1 finan¢ial support to families with 'children in ne&l'. even if they have no recourse to public ￿nds.
The Law Centr¢ is alsLI seeing an TDcreasing number of vu]ne￿ble adults with NRPF who need Care Act assessments.
This is linked to ow imrnigration advice for homelek8 patients and the Lot￿0￿ cl￿]1 fim(kd irnrnigration advice for
rough sleepers.
Asylum and Immigrntmkn

In July 2022 we begpn a major new PToject fvnded by LoTMlon Councils for 3 yths. The Iaw Centre is the South east
London sU￿r¢s1on31 lerf and works in partnership with Lewisham Refijgee aTMI Migrant Network.

Trust for Lond(rf). Additional partnetship fimding has been provided by tthviskn Council to support some of Ihe most
complex cases forpeople in initial asylum accoMM￿tiOn.
The Law Centre PToTrides Casewo￿ and rcpre5enlation for homelcss patients in parknership with tbe homelessness teams
at Guy'5 and St Thomas, hospitals. As a resuli of the succcssfvl outomes this project has demonstrdted in tcrnis not only
of benefits for very vll]nerable patient$ but also savings to th¢ NIIS. the project is being funded on a ￿lling basis by the
Gsrr Hospita] T￿￿ A similar project fimded by the SE London Integrated C*e Servi¢¢, taking Teferrals from
h05Pitals in LewÉshBm, Bromley and Green¥sicb began on a pl]￿ basis in 2022. An ¢valuation CaTried out ID 202314
showed similar wccessful outcome5 for this projteE. The ICS have now extend￿ fimdingurttil March 2025.

The Law Centre's reserves hav¢ been set in a¢coffdance with the Law CeDtr's reserve ￿liCY, which is forruulat¢d
pursuani to Charity Commission guidance. Besl practi¢e sugg&%ts that the Law Centre should have an appropriate
proportion of its annual outgolljgs available by woy of r￿er¥* and the level of the law Centte's reserves is regularly
monitored by the Tn￿te￿.
As part of the Law Centre's Fitthncial manager￿￿t proce&8es, th¢ Board of TrusW has set a target of WOTking towar
accumulating and mainlaiDing a reserve fU￿j wm.th represents 3 llKmths' annual OP£Tating Costs. This amount is
reflectii'e of gtnEtal good practice in the charity seclor. In the finan£i8] year 202415 this would arnowit to approximately
£650,0￿. These r¢5erves enable the Law Centre to deal with the followmg contingencies:
- Rcductions in or withdra￿1 of ty fi￿ding.
- Reductiott in Legal Aid eaTned Inco￿t. and
