## **Wymondley Wood Chairman’s Report** As we close the door on yet another incredibly busy year already the next one is kicking off along much the same lines, bookings have been flowing in and I believe Maureen is already taking booking enquiries for 2027! There really is little time to breathe between seasons for our hard-working team especially with the outdoor environment. Last year was an exceptionally busy one for us (as the income flow shows) with use of the building pretty much maximised throughout most weekends of the year, as a facility that only earns money from our visitors it is what we hope for but don’t always get. We have been very fortunate that a steady attendance by local schools during the weeks greatly helps boost the figures and helps the building by keeping it occupied and thus deters any unwanted visitors. We are now fully electric on site having had the propane gas tank removed and the old cooker replaced with a shiny new electric on. Recently we have changed the light fittings in the main hall for LED’s which will, we hope, ultimately help reduce running and maintenance costs. Allied to this we have finally managed to get a Smart Meter fitted to our electric supply so we really are doing our very best to keep a close rein on our running costs. We are now looking at the condition of the outside of all buildings as they are approaching the time for recoating/painting with preserver, we have always carried out this every 5 or 6 years, even though the recommended period is longer, as we feel it essential to keep the wood in as good a condition as possible and by regular application you can see how well the buildings have coped with the British weather. A full external survey of the site will be undertaken, we will then go out to tender for the works. Doing things this way will enable us to plan the expenditure to ensure we don’t over commit our funds. As ever I have to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers who give up their time freely and happily to ensure that everything runs smoothly and our visitors get the best possible experience during their stay with us. The evidence for this is in the huge number of regular visitors we have who are booking the next visit as soon as they have finished this one. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers to join our team whether as Wardens or just a pair of hands to help with regular maintenance duties both in and around the site, any amount of time anyone can give is great for us, please spread the word. Our Warden team has unfortunately been depleted this with the sad passing of Colin Green who alongside his wife Karen were long-time supporters of the Centre. His loss will be widely felt. We have also seen 2 other long serving couples leave our Team, David and Sheila Daw also Nick and Liz White. Again huge thanks to them and their commitment to the Centre. I know Maureen has managed to find some new Wardens to plug some of the gaps, well done on that score. In summary it’s been a great year, busier than ever and stretching every element of our organisation to the limit but, as ever, we have coped with the pressure and look forward to this one. We have had 16 schools visit us, from all over Hertfordshire and beyond. Three of these paid two visits each. Our own Guide and Scout groups continue to book the house whilst the field is always in demand. Sadly, there aren’t enough evenings in the week to accommodate everyone who wishes to book. During the Summer holidays we had a Guide group in the house for 10 days and Scouts from North London spent a week on the field. There are very few days in summer when we have no visitors.
