parallel evolution of the Tru5Ysfocus, projects and outreachwork whith now includes lobbying and advotscy
work at community, industryarÈd legislatNe levels. In keeping. the Sandford St Martin Award5 have grown to
include dig￿31 and online media a5 well as entries from traditional broadr3St channels These activit￿$
through which the frust engage5 With an ever-widening Cirde of content-produceT& broadcastet5,
policymakers, f3ith8roups and members of the public-provKle and infornithe platForm from which the Trust

reviewingtheTrust'saims and objeCt￿e5. in planning futu￿ artNlties. and in the administration of the annual
Sandford St Martin Awards competition.
Religious programmlng is general￿ considered to be core public servKe broadostin8 IPSBI territory. In
common with genres such as history, saen￿. cl￿r￿nt affair5 or children's pro8￿mming, this sort of contert
is the delivery of public benefit over commercial profit. And like these other core PSB genres. programmng
about relEgion or bel¢ef has fa￿d increasing finanoal. technologjcal and polttKal pressures over the last
decade.
During 202312024 the growing Influen￿ of social medta and dsgrf(al platforms contributed to wh3t was the
steepèstannual decline in broadcast television audiences Sin￿ record5 began. All PSBS have experien￿ a
fall irh both their audleft￿ Share and Fn income.

Considered. to speak about the proposed amendment5 tg the Bill.
SSMTwès still actwety engaged in lobbying whenon May 22nd an eaty UK elertionwa5 announced and as is
the protocol, the Media Bill wa5 rushed through the final stages of k61slat￿n without fvrther debate. To
ensure passage of the Bill. the Government made an l1th-hourcon￿sSi0n on public service broadc35ting,
and accepted one of the amendments SSMT had been lobbyingfor which ensures thatthe Reithian
principles to inform, educate ondentertoin remains an explicit part of publicservice broadta5ting remit.
Unfortunately, however, despite what had been whlespread sUPPOrt in both Houses, the Government did
not accept SSMfs amendment which would have seen key public gen￿5 like programmes about
religion or belief, suence, art. history or internat￿nal affairs induded in the public service broadcasting
rem￿.
Goin8 forward, SSMT is focussing on the implementation of the new Media Art and is liaising with

enables all the U K's PSBS to fulfil thèir Obl￿atIonS acr055 their video-on-demand IVODI services as well as
their broadcast channets forthe first time. It a￿0 simplrftes those oblgations by removing specrficgenre
requirement5, such as forarts, educatlOFI. Science, reltgton. and matters of international slgnrf1¢an￿, many
of which are 501ely or primarily proV￿￿ed by the UK'S PSBS. Th45 has led to concerns that the dtver5ty of
prov*sion for UK ert￿en5 will decline. Thi5 projert overseen by Catherine Johnson, Professor of Media and
Communication at the Unwersty of Leeds. and in collaboration wtth the Intemation31 BroadcastingTru5t,
and the Campaign forthe Arts will develop methods for mtsnrtoring the provision of public servicè
