The ¢harity's objective is to relieve the physically handicapped and disabled by establishing and maintaining a
holiday home or homes for persons who by reason of their physical deficiency or infim)ity ￿quire spec131 attention.

environment to people with di8abilities, whether through age or ill health, requiring s￿￿al aitention. No changes

The purpose of the charity is detailed in the charity objective and prinrip31 activities above and is available to all
members of the general public who due to physical deficiency or infimiity require special attention from a holid8y
home.
ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE
Over 1.000 people every year take a holKlay at Merton House. w¢th a Significant number coming several
year, demonstrating that a real need is being met.
The hotel is 51tuat8d at RO85-on-￿e in the beautifvl We Valley", a wpulartouristarea, In a particu18dy pictu￿$qUe
spot in the town overlooking the horseshoe bend of the River We. The commanding situation rnean5 that 8ven
guests with limited mobility are able to enjoy the lovely views ol the Herefordshire countryside frcrn the hotel sun
bunge or its gardèns.
B8cau58 of its speaalism the hotel does not cater for th8 casual tOUri5t or wsitor'off the 5treef. Histoncaly the
predominant number of holidays have been on a weekly basis but increasingly the hotel is able to offer flexible
shorter breaks ol a few days. The words ol appreoation from guests and the many repeat visits show that the aims
of the charity continue to be achieved and for this the managernent ancj staff deserve credit for their commitment
and efforts. We continue to be hugely indebted to the help and support olvolunteets and fnends of Merton House,
and in particular The Rotsry Club of Birmingham and its marnt*ts.

benefits ol a holiday or a break away 8re well ￿ognISed but the opportunity Is limited for those with disabilities
and for les5 rnobile elderty people 35 hote15 are rarely d15abled friendly, and if they are they may be unrealislically
expensive.. but th8t is our target market Important features indude emergency pull cords in 811 bedroorns and
bathrooms, wet rooms forwheelchair a￿$8. and support rails in all bathroom5 These mean the hotsl Is nolrealty
Suitab￿ for the able Lx)die(J and it does not seNc& that more profitable sector ol the community.
The hotel ￿ also speryal in the service il provides For eKamp18, transport Is a probl8m for many èldérly and
disabled people. restricting their ability to go away even if they ran find 8 Suitable de5tin8tion. But M8rton Hous
can arrange door to door transport for the vast majority of its guests. There is specially adapted Ir8nsport for
wheelchair users and several mobility scooters for the free use ol guests. The hotel liaBe5 With local doctors and
distnct nurse5 to ensurp that, where guests need on-goiry m8dical attention, that It can be provided on holiday. It
ac(xpts guests who are dependent on oxygen". en5ure5 that guests have t￿ physical aids that their reducéd
mobility might require., and takes care to cater for guests, special dietsry need3. Moreov8r. the aim 15 to make the
holiday as affordable as possibie by keeping charges lo the rninimwn. Trips are awailabl& on rnostdays in the hotel
minibus to nearby beauty spots or places of special Interest, and on several evenings of each week entertainment

increase In the numbers of sleepers. For the current year the number of sleepers were 4.987 and 5,459 In 2024.
Expenditutè in the main has continued to w811 controlléd, lika many organisats.ons our staff costs have been
impacted by the increase in the National Minimum Wage Proparty ￿paIrS were le$$ this yoar following $ubst8nbal
expenditure last year to the roof and sun lounge Light, heat and power costs have been impactsd by the rise in
the global enèrgy pric8S.
RESERVES POLICY

The hotel business is highty seasonal and ours, despite its uniqueness, is no different. Accordingly, the hotel
invariably trades at a significant loss In tre wint6r months.
Thè hotd OF¢rates on low profit margin$ 8ThJ operationally has in the past raffjty broken even. It therefore
cannot readily generate addib'onal revenue to rnake gocAY losses arising from any partiwlar downturn or
exceptional expenditure.

nearfy 50% This is becaLJ5e wè aim for thè holidays to be as affordable as possible.

Taking these factors into account, the company's policy is to seek to maintain reserves of at least4 rnonths'nomial.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
Despite a considerable amount ol money having been spent in prev￿)uS financial years, the age of tho building

The company acquired the treehold land and buildings kn¢)wn as C8ntral Garage. It demolished the
buildings to prowde additK)nal car pathing faalities for the hotel. The cost of demolition was written off and
only the ortqinal cost-plus legal charges are included in tangib￿ fixed assets.
Freehold property is not depreciat8d, nor is It shown at market value as tx)th ol these are ¢Jeemed
inappropriate because the property considered to be a perrnanent 8ndowm8nt of the charity.
