## 2 EXETER & DISTRICT KIDNEY PATIENTS ASSOCIATION TRUSTEES REPORT

## YEAR ENDED 5 APRIL 2021

The Trustees present their report and the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 5 April 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” (FRS 102) in preparing the annual report and financial statements of the charity.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

The relief of persons who are suffering from disease or illness affecting the kidneys: especially for patients receiving treatment at the Exeter Kidney Unit and its satellites.

## **Summary of the main activities in relation to these objectives**

Help for kidney patients regarding welfare and state benefits, nursing support for young kidney patients, production of newsletters and a grant supporting research into Covid vaccines and dialysis patients

## **Public benefit**

The trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit and believe this is achieved via the charity's objectives and activities.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The year has been inevitably different to previous years, with the Covid 19 pandemic rendering gatherings of most kinds unviable. Our committee meetings became virtual and our usual program of activities for patients, such as theatre trips and activity weekends, came to a halt.

We continue to assist with grants to patients in need, a sadly not uncommon consequence of becoming seriously ill with kidney problems. We provide help to patients via a dedicated service from Citizens Advice in Exeter, which offers expert assistance on claiming benefits and other such problems. We publish and distribute a regular newsletter to keep patients informed of any trips, kidney research news, diet ideas, items of interest, etc. We operate a website for patients’ information. We have a policy to supply TVs on Dialysis wards to entertain patients whilst undergoing haemodialysis treatment and are looking at further areas of ancillary equipment which may be of use, such as machines on which to exercise while on dialysis. We would assist with funding of Transplant team at British Transplant Games and World Transplant games if team members are selected.

A new development this year has been to join with the National Kidney Federation in supporting a research project run by Kidney Research UK into matters pertaining to the Covid 19 vaccines and dialysis patients.

We also wish to note with gratitude a legacy we have received from the estate of the late Joan Tolley, previously a long standing member of our Committee. Her gift will have a big impact on our longer term ability to assist kidney patients

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Brief summary of the charity’s policy on reserves**

We are implementing a new policy to hold cash reserves to cover projected regular expenditure for 12 months plus a contingency of 30%. In addition, we will hold cash to cover anticipated substantial expenditures in the same period. We will conduct periodic reviews across the hospitals, with patients and other interested parties, to ensure we are aware of areas where financial assistance is needed. Any further available funds will be invested on a longer term basis, to generate income for our work. Similarly, longer term investments will be reduced if needed, to maintain our cash position in line with the reserves policy. During the year there was an excess of receipts over payments of £27,629 (2020: excess of receipts over payments of £43,411).
