## **Secretary’s Report 2022 - Abby Kellow**

Mr President, fellow members, county officer, advisory and supporters; I am pleased to report that St Mabyn Young Farmers have had another very successful year, competing in numerous competitions, hosting various fundraising events, boosting membership numbers and having fun whilst doing so.

We started the year with the annual indoor sports competitions at Bodmin College, we had an excellent turn out of members taking part, however we were not placed in the top 3 but a very enjoyable evening was had.

Next we supported some of our members as they competed in the speaking day held at the Pavilion centre. Our junior public speaking team consisted of Alison Warne, Grace Smallwood and Jess Dally. The girls came first place taking them to South West Area, a big thanks to Maria Warne and Ed Harris for giving up their time to train them. Our after dinner speaking team consisted of Maria Warne, Cari Thomas, Rebecca Mitchell, Christina Merritt and Natalie Ham, they came away with a great result of 2nd place! The brains trust team consisted of Christina Merritt and Maria Warne who teamed up with two others from different clubs, coming 1st overall, taking them through to the South West Area round.

The club began the festive season with an evening of ice skating with Wadebridge YFC and Camelford YFC. This was followed by our annual club carol service including the Christmas draw. We also went carol singing around the area in the usual mode of transport, although this year in the large stock box rather than the small one due to the increase of members!

In the new year the club was busy practising for the pantomime competition, we teamed up with Wadebridge and Camelford to put on ‘Snow White and the magnificent seven dwarfs’. We spent many nights at Trevathan Farm shop and Shirley Whites potato sheds, which paid off as we came home with joint 3rd! Thank you to Rebecca Mitchell, Heather Harper and Emma Bennett for being our directors and thank you to the Symons family and the white family for their continued support by allowing us to use their facilities.

February came around and we held our annual dung run, the weather definitely wasn’t on our side but a very successful day was had, raising an amazing $1,315.

In March, 31 members travelled to Weston Super Mare for an entertaining time at South West Area weekend. Jess Dally, Alison Warne and Grace Smallwood competed in the junior public speaking competition and came a

very respectful 4th place. Christina Merritt and Maria Warne competed in part of a joint brains trust team and came away with 2nd place, putting them through to the Nationals Final. A good weekend was definitely had by all.

As this is our 85th year of St Mabyn YFC, we held a wine and wisdom night to raise money for our upcoming Dinner and Dance. We had just over 160 people turn up for a great evening, we had cheese and biscuits and a bar with drinks for sale. James Mutton and Tom Bray put together a very entertaining quiz and we raised $1,120 for our 85th funds. Once again thank you to the Symons family for allowing us to use the farm shop.

This year we thought we would treat our members to a trip away, the funds from last year were looking really good that we could afford to treat ourselves. After months of organising I managed to pull off a great mystery weekend for 37 of us in Bristol. We had a fun packed weekend of bowling, axe throwing, high ropes, leap of faith, giant swing, team games, beer pong, indoor inflatable course, club quiz and so much more.

Competitions day came along at the end of may, which was held at Trink Diary, near St Ives. We had a great turn out of members competing in various competitions, finishing the day with our junior tug of war team and mens tug of war team getting through to the south west area round. A big thank you must go to Andrew Kellow for his dedication to training us throughout the year.

Next came Royal Cornwall show with the cubicle theme ‘common wealth countries’ we were given India. The cubical looked amazing and was filled with some great static entires, we came 5th place which we were really happy with, thank you to everyone who gave up their time to put to the cubical. Maria Warne and Alison Warne also competed in the stock judging competitions and we came away with a cup for most points in lamb stock judging and a shield for most points overall in stock judging.

This was followed by the stock judging day held at Truro live stock market, with Steven Harris, Maria Warne and Alison Warne all doing great and coming home with lots of prize cards. Steven Harris also won a cup for a stockman of the year. Well done all.

At the end of June was the south west area tug of war competition in Gloucester, which our junior and mens team both competed in. Both teams did incredible and both came home with 4th place. Cari Thomas also travelled up there to take part in a stock judging competition and she won stockman of the year!

In July Christina Merritt and Maria Warne both competed in the National final for brains trust with their joint team. The girls did an excellent job and represented the club, and Cornwall brilliantly.

This was followed by our 85th Garden party, held at Tresunger farm by kind permission of the Warne Family. We had a great turn out of people coming to enjoy the lovely afternoon. Thank you to those who made cakes and helped on the day.

Steven Harris and Cari Thomas travelled to the great Yorkshire show to compete in the nationals dairy stock judging competition. They both did fantastic and Steven came home with 1st place in the senior stock judging, only the 2nd person to ever win 3 times. Well done both!!

Rally came around at the end of July, which was held near Redruth, we had a great number of static entries and won lots of awards. We entered a junior team, ladies team and mens team in the tug of war competition, with our junior team coming 1st and the men coming 2nd.

To round off the year the club held its annual barn doo at Treveglos Farm, by the kind permission of Sally and Andrew Kellow, with the usual theme of Glastonbury. The shed was decorated appropriately with flashing iBC’S, coloured lights everywhere and everyone dressed in their festival gear. It was a very successful night and we managed to raise an amazing amount of money.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our retiring president, James Warne, and also our club leaders Ed Harris and Shirley White, who have been extremely supportive to me through the year.

Thank you to Conan and Oliver for all their hard work and support during the year, als. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all retiring officers, advisory, parents and members for all their help in ensuring yet another successful year for St Mabyn Young Farmers club, and to congratulate everyone who has taken part in activities and competitions.

I wish all the officers elected tonight every success for the forthcoming year.
