## Secretary’s Report 2021 - 2022

The 2021 – 2022 club year has been immensely successful for Helston & St Keverne YFC. This was the first in-person club year after two years of COVID restrictions, the County Chairman was Helston & St Keverne’s Rachael Benney and the membership of the club surpassed predictions and is now the largest club in Cornwall YFC.

The new YFC year started with a successful New Members’ Evening hosted by our club leaders. Around 80 people took part and consequently the club had a large increase in membership over the year. This was then followed by a spectacular Bonfire Night fireworks display coordinated by Tom Rule and the St. Keverne Fire Station, kindly hosted by the Jenkins and the Buchanans.

Our competition year kicked off with the indoor sports, and after coming second in the West rounds, Helston and St. Keverne came second at the County Finals. December began with the Public Speaking Day, and our club had a very successful day.

Two Junior public speaking teams were entered who came second and fourth respectively. Ollie Pearce came first in a composite Brainstrust team. The After Dinner Speaking with a team consisting of Rachael Benney, Frances Hosken, Lowri Lougher, Chelsea Gilbert and Ollie Pearce won, with Ollie Pearce winning Best Speaker. The team then, with Ed Hosken stepping in at the South West Area and the National Finals, went on to come third nationally. Lowri Lougher won Best Speaker at South West Area. Thank you to Geoffery Williams, Alan Carter and Ollie Pearce for training the speaking teams.

At the February winter competitions round at St. Ives, Jono Gilbert represented the club in Senior Member of the Year and came second, winning the Mr. Personality award. Betty Buchanan won the Junior Member of the Year and subsequently competed at South West Area.

For the pantomime competition the club joined with St. Columb and Praze YFC and produced a magical performance of “A Lad in Peking”. They came 2[nd] and Ollie Pearce won the Best Actor Award. Helston and St. Keverne also entered a choir who came first in the Cornwall rounds and progressed through to South West Area and the National Finals to come fifth nationally. Thank you to Beth Hosken for coaching the choir.

At South West Area the club also entered the Men’s Dodgeball and came second progressing to nationals and gained equal fifth. Three ladies also played in the Ladies’ Rush Hockey and gained 3[rd] place. Once again Helston and St. Keverne represented Cornwall in the Sandcastle Building competition and gained first place.

In March members of the advisory hosted us for a Roving Supper where money was raised and donated to a refuge centre in the Kosice, Slovakia for the Ukrainian refuge support. It was a lovely evening and thank you to the Stevens, Jenkins, Buchanans and Wallis’ for hosting us and raising money as an immediate response to the Ukrainian war.

Three members of the club Owen Williams, Harvey Jenkin and Angus Williams played in the annual East vs West rugby game. Unfortunately, the East side won but it was great to see the club represented on a closer game than many members would remember.

County Competitions Day was held at Trink Farm in May with many club members taking part and entering competitions. Notably Owen Williams came third in the Cross Country, the Men’s Tug of War team came first and the Junior Tug of War B team came second. Both tug of war teams progressed to South West Area and the Men’s team came third. Thank you to Glen Gilbert for coaching the Tug of War teams again this year. The Stock Judging was held a week later at Truro Cattle Market. Unfortunately, due to a late change of date the club were unable to fulfil all the original entries. However, the members that took part all gained prize cards with Lucy Boaden coming 2[nd] in the Points Judging, and Rachael Benney and myself coming joint 1[st] in the Veterinary Questionnaire.

The beginning of June was the highlight of the Cornish agricultural calendar; Royal Cornwall Show. The return of this event meant the return of the Cubicle competition. The theme of this year’s display was Commonwealth Countries and the club’s theme was “Singapore”. The club gained one of the best results in recent times and came third! Thank you to all the members that contributed to the cubicle and it is worth mentioning that Frances Hosken achieved Best Floral Art. Members’ individual entries also did very well. The club was represented by Owen Williams in the Stock Judging who came first in the Intermediate Dairy Stock Judging Competition and gained most points overall in Dairy Stock Judging.

In support of our county chairman, the club came out in full force at the end of July to host the County Rally alongside Praze and Falmouth YFC. Members both past and present of all ages came together and the club had an amazing day. Many members placed in the tent and the club won the Most points in Practical, was runner’s up to the whole day and the Men’s Tug of War won with some enthusiastic encouragement from past Tug of War pullers at the side-line. Many congratulations to the club and congratulations to Rachael Benney for a successful County Rally.

In August the club hosted the Summer Do comprising of a Tractor Run, Clay pigeon shoot and Sheaf pitching competition in the day and a disco in the evening. Unfortunately, the Tractor Run had to be cancelled but the rest of the day went on as planned and Will Stevens won the YFC Clay pigeon shoot for a second year in a row, and Rebekah Hosking won the Ladies cup for a second year in a row. Many thanks to Rachael Benney, Brett Burchell, Chris and Sally Benney for hosting us.

At the end of August, the club held the second annual activities weekend where members had great fun at Retallack Water Park followed by football golf at St. Austell. In the evening some thirty members went for a meal at the Shire Inn, Praze. Some members camped in Townshend at Oliver Gilbert’s and enjoyed a bacon bap or two in the morning. Members then finished the weekend at the Hayle Golf Driving Range.

On the evening of Thursday 8[th ] September just before the club meeting it was announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the patron of the National Federation of Young Farmers had

sadly passed away. As a mark of respect, the club held a minute’s silence and postponed the Working Day and Ploughing Match.

Edward Hosken, Oliver Pearce and Chelsea Gilbert held a very successful Ploughing Match after a week’s postponement. Although the morning started with some rain, the rest of the day was beautiful and it proves that booking the sunshine is a must! The ploughing, the domestic tent and the tractor pull was a great success and the evening disco was rumoured to be Jono Gilbert’s last bar for the club after 7 years in the role. Well done and thank you to all club members, advisory and friends; without your help and support the biggest event of the Helston and St. Keverne YFC calendar would not be a success year after year.

The 2021 – 2022 club year has been busy and packed full of events after two years of restrictions. It has been lovely to experience a “normal” year; its actually been my first ever normal year. I am immensely proud to call myself a member of Helston and St. Keverne YFC.

Oliver and I are extremely thankful to everyone who has helped us make this year a success. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to complete the year without a number of people.

Firstly, thank you to all the members of Helston and St. Keverne YFC. Without you, your continued attendance at club nights and events, your entries at the competitions and your suggestions we wouldn’t have a club.

Thank you to all the advisory for their advice and their help at all the events throughout the year. Thank you for teaching us how to play whist, make pancakes, learn to plough, hosting us at different club nights, baking a cake, making teas and the list could go on! Without all of your help and support our events would never run so smoothly.

Thank you to our President, Chris Benney and Vice President, Chris Hosken. Thank you to our club leaders Zeinab, Morwenna and Hayden. Thank you for all your advice, help and support throughout the year.

Thank you to Betty Buchanan for planning an excellent club programme and keeping our social media followers updated by reporting on recent club activities on Facebook and Instagram. Betty also organises buses for members wanting to travel together to various discos.

Thank you to Andrew Coulston for being an excellent treasurer and a secret encyclopaedia on club activities. Andrew has also been a great help on the committee providing a level headed opinion to all situations.

Finally, thank you to Oliver Gilbert for being a great chairman and supporting me throughout the year. It has been a busy club year and you have always encouraged members to participate in all activities. I am glad to have worked alongside you and Andrew!

I would like to wish the club every success in the next and subsequent years. Good luck to all the new officers, especially to Ed, Ollie and Chelsea.
