Chairman’s Report
Well, what a great year we have had. The year started with new members evening. Although this wasn’t an event, I think our new members evening deserves a special mention as we had an incredible turnout. It’s great to still see lots of them involved within the club.
We then held our Annual Bonfire and Firework night at Pengelly Farm by kind permission of the Hodge Family. This was a very successful event with an amazing turnout.
Cornish Winter fair was next on the agenda, with the theme for this year’s mini cubicle being ‘Queen Elizabeth II’. Members all got stuck in with entries for the cubicle and static entries. It was great to see so many of the new members getting involved.
The next event on the Wadebridge YFC Calendar was Cider and Pastry at Beacon Farm by kind permission of the Pedlar Family. Another very successful event for the club but most importantly it was a joyful evening in the lead up to Christmas.
The final event for club before Christmas should have been the Tractor Run. Unfortunately, we encountered problems with the police and the event was unable to go ahead. However, due to people’s generosity, we still made a profit with this event which we were delighted with.
The first three months of the new YFC year were jam packed, with club’s nights including wreath making, indoor sports and our Christmas meal. As well as this, some of our members were part of a YFC choir joint with St Columb, Helston and St Keverne and Madron YFC’s. They performed at the Cornwall YFC Harvest Festival and at Truro Cathedral for the County Carol Service. We also had members attend Officer Training Weekend, which was jam packed with activities, as well as learning important skills for our future roles.
Some members this year took part in the cabaret competition, performing a dance routine to ‘Lady is a Tramp’, they had been practicing since October. Unfortunately, there weren’t as many entries as normal throughout Cornwall, so the county team decided to cancel the rounds and for everyone to perform at the Hall for Cornwall. So, on the first weekend of February, a group of members were down in Truro performing on the new and improved stage in front of hundreds of people. This year wasn’t Wadebridge’s year, and we didn’t make it into the county team, however, I believe the members had a great time performing. A big thank you must go to Nicki, who choreographed the dance. Also, to Kath Parsons for helping with the costumes and Mike and Alison Roberts for allowing us to use their garage for rehearsals.
We must say a huge well done to Becky Howard, who joined up with Tom Retallick from St Columb YFC and made their own cabaret performance. It was hilarious and they rightly so came away with 1st place as well as a spot in the county team.
There’s no sleep for the wicked! As the day after our Cabaret performance, we held our Annual Dung Sale. We had an incredible response to our dung sale this year, selling over 400 bags! This a great event to get out and about in the local community and show what YFC is all about. We had a great team driving around Wadebridge and managed to get the job done quickly. I think what helped is that we’d booked a table at the Swan for a Sunday Roast once we’d finished!
A group of members attended County Ball at the Eden Project. It was a great night, and we all danced the night away while catching up with members from across the county.
I am really pleased that our new members have become active club members getting involved with all events. I would like to thank all the members who have made this year successful. I would especially like to thank Ruby for a great programme over the year and Bea for all her hard work in making this year successful.
Sam Pedlar Chairman 2022-23
Secretary’s Report
It gives me great pleasure to give the report on the second half of the year.
March was soon upon us, which only means one thing, South West Area, this year held at Weymouth. We all had a great weekend, taking part in actives and of course having a drink or two. A big well done must go to Ruby, Hannah, Emily, and myself who competed on the Sunday in rounders, coming away with third place.
The next event in the Cornwall YFC Calendar was WOTNOT, 4 members from Wadebridge YFC took part in the challenge this year, Aidan, Ruby, Annabelle and myself. “Retallick’s Ramble’, 100 miles from Helensburgh to Edinburgh in 5 days. It was HARD, I don’t think any amount of training could have prepared us for that. Some members (Ruby and Aidan) found it easier than others (me) however we all enjoyed it and raising over £15,000 for charity made it all worthwhile.
Soon after arriving home from WOTNOT, we held our charity bingo night. Another very successful event for the club. With a great turnout from members of the public as well as the usual bunch of bingo players. A big thank you must go to our caller for the night Matt Doughty, I think it’s time you take it up as a part time job!
We had the pleasure of being host club for Competitions Day this year, held at Blable Farm. With our own Becky Howard being GP Chairman, we wanted to help her out as much as possible. The day was a huge success, we were placed in multiple games including stuff your face, sheaf pitching and cross country! A big well done must go to our Junior TOW team who came 1st place, a massive achievement especially seeming
it was your first competition! Also, a huge congratulations to Becky, it was a lovely day, and you should be very proud!
Now, the big one, Royal Cornwall Show. I was dreading it if I’m being honest however I was staying positive. This year’s cubicle theme was ‘Music Icons’ and we were given Elvis. Members had been working on the cubicle since April and were all happy with the final result. The first day of show had arrived, where did I go first? The YFC tent of course. I was happy to see that we had come 8th place in the cubicle competition. I then went to have a look around at our static entries and wow, what a talented club we are. Almost everything we entered we were placed in which is a huge achievement.
Then, on the Saturday, we headed to the YFC tent once again for the afternoon entertainments and prize giving. For anyone who missed it, myself, Ruby, Tilly, Becky and Annabelle, got up on stage dressed as the Spice Girls singing along to ‘Wannabe’! Defiantly out of my comfort zone but a good memory! After this was the prize giving, we were delighted to win the ‘First Aid Trophy’ and ‘Most points in static entries’ trophy. While I thought Wadebridge’s success must be finished there, I was over the moon when Tom announced Wadebridge YFC as overall winners. Something I will never forget, and I can’t thank everyone enough for making it happen.
It was then time for the final part of RCS, the after party. With last year’s cancellation, I just had to make sure it went ahead this year. Thankfully, security turned up and we had a perfect evening with no problems, it couldn’t have gone any better. Over 700 people attended and speaking to people after the do, it sounded like everyone really enjoyed themselves which was the main thing. Again, another thank you must go to everyone who helped leading up to RCS as well as after. It’s a big thing to pull off and without everyone’s support it would not have been possible. I must also not forget to mention Camels Rugby Club, they very kindly donated £1000.
A few weeks later, our Junior TOW team headed to Dorset to compete in the South West Area round. This was only their second competition, and they came away with an impressive 4th place. A massive thank you must go to Liam Barkwill for taking on the job as coach, not an easy job but you did a great job. Well done again!
One of the final events in the Cornwall YFC Calendar was the Annual Rally, this year held at Talskiddy. Once again, we were hosts club for this event. I and other members had never visited Talskiddy so much until Rally. Spending multiple nights there helping Tom and the team prep for the big day. It was a great day with Wadebridge being placed in multiple different static entries. Our youngsters then had to head on home, while us older lot headed to the rally do, which was a great way to end the day.
As if I didn’t have enough to do in my secretary year, I decided back in December that I fancied going on the NFYFC trip to Kenya. With the interview process being successful and securing my place on the trip, it was finally time for me to leave. It was an incredible trip and I recommend NFYFC travel to everyone.
Once I landed back in the UK, I knew I had to crack right on with organising Harvest Festival. This was one of my final events and I wanted to make it a good one. The end of September soon arrived, and we held the service at St Wenn Church followed by pasties and puddings at St Wenn Hall. Slightly different to how we had done it previous years, but I was happy with how the evening turned out.
Well, that’s me done. It’s been a crazy year, but I have loved every second of it. Thank you very much to our Chairman, Sam Pedlar for everything you have done. Also, the rest of the officer team, I couldn’t have done it without you. I must also say a big thank you to my brother, William. He may have winged every time I asked him to help me, but he always did, and the year would have been much harder without his help.
I wish the best of luck to the new officers, and I will be here supporting you every step of the way!
