AGM TRUSTEES’ REPORT 2022

Watchet Museum AGM March 9th 2022 Methodist Schoolroom

7.30pm

It is good to be getting back to some normality with this AGM back on track. As our last was only 6 months ago I will try and keep this short. Our speaker at the AGM will be Jon England, who is responsible for all the hammers and nails we have seen around the town and our ‘Timwood Man’ who will be coming out of hibernation next week.

We enjoyed a modest season last year with 12,479 visitors which included 2313 children. As we didn’t open until May and then with reduced days, also the trains on the West Somerset Railway were on a limited service I think we did alright. This year we intend to open on the weekend of 19th March, when the trains start and then from the 26th March right through until November albeit we will keep Fridays for bookings only.

Our Winter Talk series have been well attended and we only had one cancelled event when the Omnicron variant was at its height. It is hoped to re-arrange that talk by Alan Bunyan for the autumn.

The Junior Museum has not yet resumed and I think it is fair to say the position is still unclear in that regard. We are considering utilising an Outreach Worker at the school, to carry our aims forward.

Our Accreditation renewal is still on hold and we await our invitation to submit our plans and procedures for scrutiny. I confess that I find it difficult to focus on this when they don’t give us a date, it keeps getting pushed to the back of my job list.

We continue to collaborate with other local organisations in the town. In particular Watchet Conservation Society, who we work with a lot through Nick Cotton especially, but we also loan out items to WSMR and Friends of Watchet Station. Regarding Nick, a two week exhibition of James Date’s photography, from the 19th century, is being arranged for the autumn of 2022; to be held in the Lynda Cotton Gallery. Details will be released soon. James Date was Watchet’s first professional photographer.

Of some concern is the situation regarding our lease on the Market House, it expired in September, last year. Savills, land agents for the Wyndham Estate are proving difficult to deal with. Watchet Town Council, being our trustees, are pursuing the matter.

Our ‘thank you outing’ for our stewards, to Lynton & Lynmouth was much enjoyed. It is such a delightful area.

Our committee of trustees remain committed and I thank them all for their help this past year.

As ever we are so grateful too, for all the behind the scenes work that helps us function smoothly and special thanks to Robin Williams and Maurice and Joyce Chidgey who edit our newsletters and minutes.

It is of course our stewards who keep us running through the season, without them we would not manage; a huge thank you. And you the members who continue to support us, also many thanks.

Refreshments will be available after the business of the AGM is completed, and I thank Molly for organising that.

Report from the Curator on activities

Hopefully we will have a full season this year.

We have not been idle over the winter and are always exploring ways to keep the Museum dynamic and relevant. In particular we have upgraded our website so that it is fresh and easier to access. (watchetmuseum.co.uk) Our thanks to Jonathan Westcott for heading up this project.

At the last AGM I mentioned the ‘Brian Pearce Geology Collection’ donated to us by his widow. I am happy to say that Andy King, of Geckoella., is arranging to have the local samples displayed in the Museum on a map of the area, which will also show the local strata.

Another exciting donation was a Thomas Chidgey, picture of the Harbour with the lifeboat sailing inwards, dated around the 1920s. It was kindly donated by John Wedlake Griffiths, has been cleaned by Nick Cotton and reframed and will be unveiled when we re-open on 19th March 2022.

Our photographic display this year has been arranged by Dot & Hugh Amery, and is based on the ‘ Looking Back ‘articles that we have supplied to West Somerset Free Press. Thank you both.

To have more space available Sue is arranging a single frame timeline, in conjunction with Active Signs, to replace the Chronology which has served us well over the last few years. It should be ready by the end of the month. Thank you Sue.

We are slowly having the ‘swing frame photos’ remounted by Courtyard framing. It is a long fiddly job but the result will be worth the cost & effort.

A new display case exhibit features the Ancient ‘Court Leet’, which has existed since the 13th Century. The Ale Taster’s role is the prime appointment as I know from experience.

A long term project, headed up by Keith Sullivan, is to digitise our large photographic archive so that it can be accessed on an interactive display, available to our visitors. This will take time and is only in its infancy. We hope to collaborate with Bridgwater College on this.

Adrian Webb and Philip Ashford’s book about 17th C St Decuman’s Parish is at the editing stage. It has been delayed by COVID and family bereavements.

Gill Williams and Gay Chilcott have taken on the mantle, left by Toby , in arranging memberships and will now be busy with the stewards rota for our pending re-opening. Thank you ladies.

So you see that all of our committee of trustees are involved in keeping the Museum functioning 3 Page 2 of

and interesting so that we remain a positive asset to the town.
