The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). ## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** ## **Objectives and aims** The objects of the charity are: 1. To further the best interests of nursing and the nursing profession. 2. To afford mutual help and to promote social interaction. 3. To promote and maintain a Benevolent Fund for the benefit of League members and St. Bartholomew's nurses who trained prior to September 1993. 4. To promote and maintain Scholarship Funds for the benefit of League members. The Benevolent Fund is available to provide assistance not only to League members, but also to any nurse who trained at St. Bartholomew's Hospital or who qualified as a nurse at St. Bartholomew's School of Nursing and Midwifery prior to September 1993. The sub-committee, which administers the Fund on behalf of the League, is concerned to give assistance to those in need arising by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. The sub-committee welcomes all enquiries and applications with urgent requests being considered throughout the year. The Scholarship Fund financially assists members of the League with course and conference fees and associated costs of study. A sub-committee administers the fund and meets four times a year to consider applications. Page 1 **The League of St Bartholomew's Nurses** ## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 April 2026** ## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities** Stewart Baines Coltart Scholarship Fund Financial assistance from our fund provides fully paid-up League members with support for study, course and conference attendance and associated costs. Study undertaken does not always need to be related to nursing and this year, has encompassed professional and life enhancing topics, as well as preparation for retirement and career change. We have met on four occasions over the past year. Hybrid meetings have become routine which have enabled committee members to join in person, as well as from overseas and various parts of the UK. Committee members have recorded a high level of attendance; minutes of the meetings are available on request. This year, 20 League members have submitted 20 applications for assistance with their studies, an increase of 43% on 2025. One of these applications was refused, one withdrew before discussion, one was deferred in need of more information, and two recipients were unfortunately unable to use their awards. Therefore, 17 awards, totalling £46,712 were agreed, a rise of 370%, of which £8,666 has been claimed so far. The Committee is currently looking to set up on-line banking for all its transactions. The vast majority of requests were for nursing and healthcare related courses this year, with 5 non-nursing related. Seven applications were for MSc courses: in Advanced Clinical Practice, Advanced Nurse Practitioner training, Health and Wellbeing, Palliative Care, Clinical Dermatology and Trauma Sciences. Three were for MA courses: in Clinical Education and Art Psychotherapy. Five applications were for assistance with diplomas and courses in psychotherapy, medical healthcare, public health, leadership, organ lessons and one was for attendance at a mindfulness retreat. Four members applied for assistance with conference attendance: in critical care, palliative care, for specialist nurses and to attend the International Council of Nurses. The guide to completion of our application form, published in last year's League News, seems to have had some effect, as this year we have had less queries to pursue with applicants, thus making the application process smoother. We are still keen, however, that successful applicants allow themselves the time to practise the knowledge and skills learnt from their studies. We ask recipients to write a report on completion of their studies or conference attendance, demonstrating how these activities have affected their professional skills and enhanced their practice and personal development. These reports, published in the League News and on the website, can make interesting reading and we hope that they will encourage more scholarship applications, whilst also accounting for the use of charitable monies. We continue to annually update the Grant Making Policy and review the sum of money to be allocated for the forthcoming financial year. Following on from the findings of the strategic planning day in March 2025, we have set up a subgroup, looking at how the League scholarship fund can assist as many Barts nurses as possible in their studies and professional life. We have liaised with senior management at Barts to look at the funding of prizes, awards or posts and the sponsoring of Barts nurses on leadership courses. This project continues. We trust that the year ahead will find more League members applying for assistance, for both work and non-work-related study and conference attendance. We are keen to assist as many Barts nurses as possible in their studies and work hard to consider how we can best achieve this. We cannot guarantee that we can always honour the request in full, or indeed to offer ongoing continued support for lengthy courses, but all applications are carefully considered. ## Benevolent Fund The market value of our investments managed by Coutts remains in excess of £1.5m. Full details of our investments, income and expenditure for the year are printed in the League News having been independently examined by our accountants McLean Reid. £76,600 has been spent on Gifts and grants and a further £16,400 on printing and posting the League News to our 2000+ members worldwide Legacies and donations of £209,000 have been most gratefully received this year. Financial awards have supported physical and mental health needs, mobility and safety issues and have included contributions towards mobility scooters, hip surgery, taxi fares, removal expenses, gas and electricity fitments, bathroom adaptations, physio and speech therapy services, dental work, hearing aids, and winter fuel allowances. 62 bouquets of flowers were delivered to members for a variety of reasons including illness, following surgery, in sympathy and in celebration of life events including birthday flowers to 6 members aged 100 years and over. Page 2 **The League of St Bartholomew's Nurses** ## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 April 2026** Christmas cards, signed by our President, were sent to over 500 members qualified 60 years and more with a gift of postage stamps for those living in the UK. Letters were also sent to those members who qualified 60 years ago in 1966 reminding them of the scope of the Benevolent fund and offering help and in particular the support available to carers by funding short respite breaks or paid help to allow carers to go out for a day. It is wonderful to receive thank you letters and news from members around the world appreciating how significant a card or bouquet of flowers can be as well as a major award. The committee met 5 times in person /or on Teams during the year with many informal contacts in between and I would like to thank them for their time, expertise and commitment to managing the Benevolent fund and ensuring its charitable objects are met. A particular thank you to Jane Mc Donald who retired from the committee during the year. For several years Jane led the team posting out Christmas cards each year and arranging delivery of birthday flowers. She also designed and dispatched League memorabilia for Bart's 900th and the League 125th anniversaries. Finally, it is not always easy to ask for help but please don't hesitate. No grant funding from central government or local authority is received and during the current year no income has been received from outside the UK. No trustee has received remuneration. ## **Reserves policy** The Trustees' policy is to ensure sound investment of the charitable funds and expenditure to fulfil the charitable objects. ## **Going concern** The trustees have assessed whether the use of the going concern basis is appropriate and have considered possible events or conditions that might cast significant doubt on the ability of the charity to continue as a going concern. The trustees have made this assessment for a period of at least 12 months from the date of approval of these financial statements. In particular, the trustees have considered the charity's cash flow forecasts and level of reserves. The trustees have concluded that there is a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. The charity therefore continues to adopt the going concern basis in preparing its financial statements. ## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Governing document** The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity. The Trustees have met twice this year. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, with the exception of investments which are included at market value, as modified by the revaluation of certain assets. ## **Income** All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. ## **Expenditure** Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure. ## **Taxation** The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. ## **Fund accounting** Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. We can then arrange for potential committee members to observe meetings before making a decision about joining us. This would be for a period of 3 years, with an opportunity to serve a further 3. We trust that the year ahead will find more League members applying for assistance, for both work and non-work-related study and conference attendance. We are keen to assist as many Barts nurses as possible in their studies and work hard to consider how we can best achieve this.
