**CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2023**

Good evening all and welcome to the Arden Theatre.

On Sunday May 28[th] , we celebrated the 40[th] Anniversary of the opening show at the Arden with a barbecue. It was a lovely afternoon and was great to see faces from the past and present exchanging stories and memories. We have some lovely photos of Mary Caryer talking to Peter Bressington – a member of the first show – Cold Old Blow. It was also lovely to meet and welcome the Mayor of Swale

We also took the opportunity to receive with thanks a bench donated by Up The Creek Pantomime society in memory of Guy Hawkins

In preparation for this event, there were many involved – Maggie Scott, Carole Morris and Richard Andrews preparing the Garden, Louisa Mace wheeling and dealing for plants in the Market, Phil Mace organising and running the Karaoke, Lou Funnell, Katie Sherlock Clarke and David Clarke Running and re stocking the bar, Vicky Smith sorting out the buffet, Brian Denton and Colin Sherwood running the Barbecue and many others on the day lending a hand when needed.

This came directly after a morning where Colin Sherwood and Peter Vale struck the set for Calendar girls that had finished the previous night. Calendar girls was nothing short of a triumph with new director Andrea Oliver, Mike Oliver on the lights, Richard on sound, Howard Smith Co-ordinating all the tech, Vicki Smith stage managing, Sadie Barratt doing the programmes and fliers, John Pickering selling almost all the programmes, Gillian Fox, Rachel Birmingham and Sue Gower as dressers, and a cast of 14. Last Saturday, Derek and Phyll Brown came in and did their monthly deep clean of the kitchen – another service that is freely given and very gratefully received.

So, what am I getting at? We have ourselves a community theatre – a busy and thriving community theatre.

This is just one weekend in a very full year - a snapshot - and as I always seem to say – what a year.

Those named above are just a few of the people who have given up free time to make the theatre continue in growth in the community this year and I thank them all.

Last year we launched the idea of sub committees to involve more people and make use of specific skills.

These have largely been a great success and in particular the Drama Sub Committee run by Natalie French. Plays were submitted by potential directors, read, chosen,

agreed by the general committee, the season launched, shows auditioned, rehearsed and performed. QED! The drama committee does what it says on the tin! Natalie will have more to say about this when she reads the drama report so I shall move on – once I have thanked her profusely for organising the monthly market stall sessions. These have been such a boost for bringing the theatre into the public domain. Just to let you know, we are already planning the next season.

I would like to thank all of our directors this year, Derek Brown, Bob Froud, Richard Andrews, Barbara Lozynska, Andrea Oliver, John Moss, Mick Bennell and James Freed. Another example of how many people are now giving their time to the Arden Theatre.

Each director brings in new people and new audience. The most wonderful thing has been to see a growing community of Arden audience who tend to sit in the same seats at each performance. Now that is regular custom – that is a community theatre.

Marketing in general has also improved this season with increased profile on social media – thanks go to Laura Crawte for running the facebook accounts and organising Instagram and I know that this coming year there is much more to come from the marketing team. Vicky Smith will be co-ordinating this team in the future. Thanks to all involved.

The youth theatre has gone from strength to strength, and we have had to create another class to accommodate more students. There is still a short waiting list but we shall be able to involve those on it in September as the older groups fill up leaving space in the younger group. Many thanks to Richard Andrews, Em Taylor, Ashton Town, Ed Davies, Grace Manning, Tom Pikett and Eloise Jones for their energy and assistance.

In addition, we teamed up with Vibe – and Lou Funnell, to run an Arts Council award summer school. This was well attended and resulted in all of our students achieving the Bronze award. This year they shall be going for silver!

We also had the annual youth theatre challenge where other schools and drama groups came together to share an evening of short plays on the theme – this year, being coronation year “A crown and an explosive device”. Such a varied and exciting response, for which all the participants were awarded a commemorative plaque and a free professional stage combat workshop.

Did you know that we are trying to raise money to build an extension to the theatre? Of course you did!

Did you know that we have currently raised about £50,000? You may not. Last year, I highlighted the fact that you were all sitting on seats courtesy of Swale Fisheries.

2

This year, you are sitting under a completely new LED lighting system partially funded by the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce.

In these tricky times, it is a little harder to find sources of funds, but we are well on the way due mainly to the tireless efforts of Richard Andrews who has spent many hours bid writing and seeking funding sources. We are excited that he is now to be joined by Denise Knights – Toomer and Alison Reynolds to assist him in our journey. We will get there!

Special thanks also to Wendy Otway whose vision and planning of the Arden Ball and tenacity in following it through – assisted by Brian Denton – raised a wonderful £6,600.

Our next fundraising event will be a Horse Racing evening on Saturday 24[th] June. All races have now been sponsored, but we still need jockeys and racegoers. YOU CAN SPONSOR A HORSE THIS EVENING – see Richard.

Other events coming up in the year, include an evening of music at Sheldwich Leas - Phil Mace and Friends, and a Quiz night.

The addition of the new LED lighting system has been of great benefit to the theatre and massive thanks are due to Howard Smith for setting everything up and managing the technical side of the theatre this year. I really don’t know how he manages to juggle his time but he does, and, thanks also to our volunteer operators – Luke Fruin, Lindsay Dale, Richard Andrews, Mike Oliver, Mick Bennell and Rebekah Wooton the shows have been lit and sounded – if that is a word!- to a high standard.

The Arden awards evening on 25[th] June, was a wonderful evening filled with positivity and celebration. There is another in the pipeline. Watch this space.

Each event has a team of volunteer crew members without whom the events would not happen. I would like to publicly thank Colin Sherwood for his continued massive contribution as set builder, stage manager, duty manager and generally unfailing supporter of the theatre. He is a one off and without his contributions, things would not have run as smoothly. He has just built a roof cover at the side of the container for all things we have to store outside. Brilliant.

We should also mention Vicky Smith – Stage manager extraordinaire, Sue Gower and Joan Sach – props and costume, Martin Kelly – fantastic set painter who has helped bring many of our shows to life and Sadie Barrett who has taken over our printing contract and will do things for us at a drop of a hat.

The make up ladies, Bev Cook, Becky Simmons, Chel Mckean and Melissa Dawson Bowling.

3

The Chaperones, Sue Shepherd, Gillian Fox, Sue Gower. David Clark, Katie Sherlock - Clark.

…..and then there is the bar and the bar team. Lou Funnell has kept the bar running like a well -oiled machine this year as we have become more and more busy. Increased work commitments have led to her handing over the title to someone else but thank you Lou for all that you have done for the theatre, and I know you will still be involved - just on a smaller scale. Many thanks to all the bar team for your continued support– Sid Taylor, Katie Sherlock Clarke, David Clarke, Maggie Scott, Debbie Taylor, Jill Hawkins, Michelle Taylor, Carole Morris, Dave Turner, Don Cockrill, Peter Vale, Brian Denton and Jenny Silver.

Oh and what about the actors? You can’t really run a theatre, produce 8 shows a year, without actors. Countless numbers of willing and talented people, giving freely of the time and energies. So many new faces too! Thank you all for breathing life into the lungs of the Arden.

There have also been other users of the theatre this year. The relationship with those at the swimming pool continues to grow and they regularly use the foyer for training purposes and meetings.

We have also had other individuals and groups making use of our facilities, Faversham Fringe, Tim Edey, The Sound of Musicals with Claire Snoad, The Jersey Boys, Family Learning Group to name a few

Behind all these events is the committee. They have continued this year to work tirelessly to keep the theatre going. They quietly get on with things to the point of people sometimes wondering who they are but rest assured, their names have already been mentioned in this report on several occasions.

Thanks are due to Richard Andrews who has continued to organise bookings and some of the publicity at the theatre. He has continued to send out regular newsletters that have been well received and more and more people have joined the mailing list because of his efforts.

Richard Baker – Richard is still currently our treasurer. He has done this job for many years and his invaluable in preparing and maintaining our accounts. Thank you Richard for putting up with my awful mathematics for yet another year.

Brian Denton – Brian has been involved in many fundraising events this year. As an event planner and manager, he is invaluable. Thanks Brian

Natalie French – Natalie has been Deputy Chair this year. She has been a busy and valued member of the team and as Drama committee chair and to organise the season launch has been a star. Thank you, Natalie, for all that you have done.

4

Although other commitments have led Natalie to stepping away from the general committee, she will continue to Chair the Drama Committee for the next season.

Luke Fruin – Luke started the year as a committee member but as often happens, life took over and he became unable to give the time to the role that was needed. I would like to thank Luke for the time that he gave to the theatre and in particular for his work with the youth theatre. We wish him well for the future.

Eldon Hinchliffe – Eldon is another longstanding member of the committee. He is responsible for anything to do with building. The planning consent expired this year but I am pleased to announce that Eldon re-submitted the plans and we have once again been given the permission needed to build the extension. Thank you Eldon.

Joan Sach – Joan has been our secretary this year. She is unable to attend tonight but I would still like to publicly thank her for all that she has done and for her continued work with costume and props. Get well soon Joan.

Vicky Smith – Vicky has been deputy chair this year and has been invaluable as stage manager, props creator and with the commitment to the marketing team.

So, that brings us to the end of the report. As I said at the beginning, what a year! There have been hissy fits and flounces, laughter and tears, hugs, arguments, reconciliations, dramas and crises and all else that contributes in making the theatre the family that it has become.

Thank you all for your part in it. You are all important, you are all welcome.

Thank you all.

Welcome to the drama report of 2022/3!

some stats and graphs. This isn’t a review of the shows, more a documentaon of what went on. Hold on to your hats boys…

I’ll just fess up right here, throughout the report there are quotes from some of the Arden plays we’ve done this year. Spot them all and you’ll win…err…bragging rights.

This report covers the period from the last AGM to this one. With a bit of a forward look. No fortune telling mind as there is too much guess work even when the gi is genuine, which it very rarely is.

I think it is fair to say that building on all the work in previous years, this year really stepped up the awareness of the theatre in the town. Each producon seemed to build on the last one with returning audiences and a growing loyal following. We’re all aware that every producon takes an enormous amount of work individually but each one is built on the work of the previous one, raising the Arden theatre in the consciousness of the town, and surrounding areas

As many of you will know we have Arden Producons and outside hirers. The laer is not a phrase which appropriate conveys the affecon that we have for these ‘outside’ producons, many of which are run by members. The biggest difference between the two is in an Arden Producon, all proceeds go to the theatre whereas outside hirers pay a small fee to hire the theatre and take the cket sales themselves (oen for their own charity or to promote the arts a different way). For all shows, the Arden takes the bar sales. Determined to go to the pub? When did I need determinaon to go to the pub? In seng the season though, as you will appreciate, we put in the Arden producons first and

The drama commiee was set up in June 2022 and devised the 2023 season so I’ll talk about the 2022 plays (pre new drama commiee, post AGM) first and explain the approach for the 2023 season and process for a bit then menon the 2023 plays. Be not afeared, the island/report is full of noises.

## **April 2022 to December 2022**

## **Arden Producons**

Right aer the AGM we had a Fund Raising Concert for the Ukraine. This was organised by Derek Brown and was a wonderful evening. We have to be really careful as a charity raising money for another charity but this was choreographed and delivered with footwork Fred Astair would envy.

sunny aernoon, accompanied by tea and some cake. Directed by Jo Andrews

The summer children’s workshop, in partnership with Vibe put on The Tempest. Directed by Lou Funnell and Jo Andrews

Talking Heads in September was directed by Emma Taylor taking three monologues and this brought in new actors and new audience to rave reviews.

Also in September we put on Blithe Spirit – this had been postponed due to illness and had several schedule and cast changes. Directed by Derek -unshakeable- Brown who delivered a corker. Parcular menon to the effects on this one- they were significantly more than normal and carried out with panache- thanks to Colin and John.

producon to make use of the flexible seang and perform in the round. This was directed by Richard Andrews

beauful. Our Christmas producons are usually the biggest and most complicated in terms of cast and crew and this was no excepon- a vast and wonderful producon. Directed by Jo Andrews

## **2023**

In planning the 2023 season we decided to reinstate the Drama Commiee. Every stage of its growth had its own beauty. The queson of who wanted to be involved was posed at the last AGM and we took all comers. In some weird twist of fate, I ended up as chair. I want to pay tribute to the drama commiee for 2023 season (in alphabecal order)

-

- Jack the captain Woolford

-

- Jo plate spinning Andrews

- Lindsay the oracle Dale

- Richard the general Andrews

With Howard Smith as advisor and Paul Doust and Em Taylor who helped us set the whole thing up.

The process to come up with the 2023 season was a lile rushed to be honest. What seemed like the right thing to do in May meant that we need to move prey damn fast to get the call out for directors, read all the plays, select them, check the directors were sll in and plan the launch event. We’re trying to do this at a more reasonable pace this year and this is one of the reasons we are keeping the same commiee for 2024 season; it was a completely new process and we want to refine it this year at a proper pace. We will be holding elecons for the commiee posion next year in case anyone wants to put their name forward.

More on this years launch event later.

The call for directors and plays went out and we had a really wonderful response. So many in fact that we were spoilt for choice in choosing the plays for the 2023 season. Because of what you’ve given (we) had a choice. In the planning, the commiee had decided aer the last few years (did someone menon the P word?!) that the town could do with a laugh so we agreed on a theme of comedy- comedy in all its forms. We also agreed (somewhat controversially) that we would go for well-known plays. The idea being we wanted to grow audiences, we were properly launching the extension fund, and wanted to come ‘back’ with a splash.

We’re almost exactly half way through the season at the me of wring (4/8) and it seems to be working. We sold out a show in January (first me in my memory) and have connued this with a sold out run in May. Chang to people in the bar or market (as you do), I’ve had more than one person say that they are now coming to every show, whatever is on, one person said since Outside Edge. Howza!

## **Jan 2023 to May 2023**

new faces (including the star, sorry, one of the stars) returning actors who’d been away for a bit, new stage hands and a whole host of supporters. This was a show about an amateur theatre group desperate to raise funds (sound familiar?). Art imitang life.

Andrews. Another gamble, would we get anyone to write? Well yes, yes we did. I was really privileged to be able to read all of the submissions. Now wring, to me, is a superpower and I was blown away by the standard. Three went on to be staged- simply amazing.

Educang Rita directed by Basia Lozynska was up next; a two hander although as we all know the support cast for smaller actor plays aren’t oen any smaller. A play on the floor of the auditorium with audience all the way around contrasng with the first play of the year. Frank trying to Educate Rita but in the end, who educated who?

Twelve Night was directed by John Moss. A return of Shakespeare to the theatre was a bit of a gamble when we were planning it but I think it is fair to say it paid off. The plot of this one involved mistaken identy, love affairs, yellow stockings and an inflatable father Christmas, obvs. The set design and painng has been wonderful all year but the reacon of John to coming in to find the set up early was priceless. Each member of the cast as they arrived was met with a beaming John saying “have you seen this set?!”

big enough buns was sold out before the first show. A testament to the markeng group, Andie’s choice of play, growing awareness of the theatre and maybe something to do with nakedness, sorry nudity. Audiences le glowing and singing its praises.

The second half of the year will be reported on at the next AGM but you can bet there will be a sprinkling of fairy dust, murder most foul, care home shenanigans and many more laughs along the way.

Can I take this opportunity to plug the launch event – 16 September. Write it down (no, really, now). I’ll be looking for a team to do the event. Let me know!

As I get to write this, I just thought I’d grab my chance to say thank you. The drama commiee have been outstanding but I also want to highlight the people who don’t oen get the recognion. I know there are many examples of things that go on behind the scenes we don’t all hear about, I know because I come across some by chance or directly- Stan/Sid rushing off stage aer his STUNNING performance in Guns and Roses to open the bar, Don coming in to help at the bar as I was on but had a cket for the show, Jo and Richard sneaking in to weed the garden when no one was about, Marn and his wife coming in aer hours to paint scenery and disappear like pixies, Dave stood at the market stall and making the tea for everyone before every rehearsal, Colin starng taking sets down at 6am to get it cleared for the next show, Maggie re-arranging her commitments to do the bar …I could go on and on, there are so many examples and loads and loads I don’t know about. These are all the acts that keep the theatre running and have made this year our most successful yet. Most wonderful. On to the next!
