Chair’s Report

Some positives for 2021: we renewed our lease for the land from Broxbourne Council for another 20 years, we received grants and were able to replace the windows in the bottom hall and the doors (though the doors are proving problematic!) and we treated our amazing volunteer leadership team to lovely new T shirts with their names on.

This is our AGM for 2021 as we all know the pandemic continued to cause problems for us all. When meetings could resume, and leaders felt happy to have their sections back, with strict but gradually relaxing COVID guidelines being in force, this happened – but was again very tricky situation for leaders and for young people.

Once again we didn’t have our main fundraising events were cancelled so no fireworks and no summer day – fireworks will return this November (with a bang!). We continue to raise some money via EasyFundraising, The Broxbourne Lottery and Amazon Smile.

Financially again we were supported by COVID grants from the government which helped enormously. Hayley and I worked hard on saving various costs. Hall bookings resumed and it was lovely to have such a variety of folks using our facilities across the week – everyone from babies with a parent enjoying a music class, to the dancers tapping away and the retired groups chatting over a cuppa and creating art works. We are truly a community space for all.

Thanks to all our leaders who work so well together and to those parents on the exec committee for their support, help and for volunteering. I know we all fit it in around busy lifestyles, families, and jobs but it is all appreciated by the young people and their parents. Special thanks to Lez, Joy, Nathan, Maria and Hayley. Thanks to Rookie for being minutes secretary for many years (with a twisted arm latterly) and welcome to our new secretary: Sonja!

Watch this space for new and exciting refurbishment work happening in 2022! If you’d like to get involved in supporting the group, please ask your leader or email me. Please follow us on Facebook.

Best wishes, Ann Troll, Group Executive Chair chair@1stwormley.org.uk

GSL Report

Thank you for all coming and supporting this historical event, this is my 1[st] report in this role and hopefully more to follow.

The past 2 year has put a strain on all of us and especially in the volunteer sector (The Scout and Guide Associations).

When the lockdowns were finally lifted I personally was concerned how the response would be from the young people in coming back into our two associations but my doubts were unfounded.

The three Scout sections (Bevers, Cubs and Scouts) have all returned to their pre pandemic numbers if not stronger and the Guide sections are slowly picking up, this is not just in 1[st] Wormley but also nationally which is great news. New volunteers are always needed!

At 1[st] Wormley all the sections are well back into the swing of things and all have exciting programmes planned for the future.

I would like to close off by saying that the group couldn’t keep going if it wasn’t for all the volunteers from the leaders giving up 2 hours a week (ha ha!) to the members of the Group Executive Committee giving up a little more hours (even more funny), but especially over these last 2 years a special thanks to our chairperson and treasurer for all their effort behind the scenes.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone possible while group scout leader and please continue supporting the group directly or indirectly.

Best wishes, Lez Brown Group Scout Leader

Section Reports: Guiding

1[st] Wormley Rainbows We held our Rainbows meetings via Zoom until September 2021.

1[st] Wormley Brownies

We started back with our face to face Brownie meetings in September 2021 having spent the first months of the year using Zoom. It was so good to meet again in person and welcome some new Brownies to our Unit. We made bird boxes, had many craft evenings, did first aid and enjoyed putting a sling and bandages on each other , made fruit salad for our Mother’s Day Gift, did activities for Guiding Thinking Day and continued to follow the Guiding Programme for the Brownies section.

Rainbows earnt lots of badges over Zoom, whilst enjoying Science experiments, cooking, happy yoga and much more.

It was so lovely to be able to meet at Wormley face to face again.

We started our face to face meetings back in September with a very low number of Guides. The pandemic had taken its toll and most of the Guides from the previous year did not want to continue to meet on Zoom.

We had a Badge presentation evening around the campfire, and some Rainbows received Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

We currently have 19 Rainbows, and are at capacity, with a large waiting list of 30 plus.

However the few Guide we have are keen to turn up each week and enjoy their evening; they love cooking (or anything to do with food!!) and have had various cooking evenings, they did the photographers badge, some first aid, various crafts, Vlogging badge and had various evenings following the Guiding Programme for the Guides section.

I would like to say a big thank you to Jane Howard for all your support and for everything you do to help Rainbows run smoothly every week !

A very big Thank you to Hannah (Barn Owl) and ALL parents for their support and friendship they give.

Joy

We would also like to thank our Rainbow parents, without you, our Zoom meetings would not have been such a success.

Looking forward to a fun filled 2022!

A BIG thank you to Abi. Emily and Maria for all the help and support they give.

Sunflower (Maria) and Jane

Broxbourne District Ranger Guides

Like the Brownies and Guides, we started back with face to face meetings in September 2021. Many of the rangers had left to go to university so our numbers were extremely low. We have three girls who meet most weeks and enjoy all the homecraft activities, especially cooking, or anything to do with food! We made pancakes and enjoyed having a pancake race too, the chocolate fondu evening was fun as well! They have also enjoyed pyrography, glass engraving, glass painting as well as evenings just chatting and chilling! We also try to follow the Guiding Programme for the Ranger section.

Thank you to Abi and Caroline for all the help, ideas and support you give each week.

Section Reports: Scouting

In 2021 Beavers began their first sessions in April we welcomed all the Beavers back with some games that we was able to keep a distance from each other still. Beavers covered first aid badge and safety badge by playing games, talking about health and safety within the home and outside. Beavers covered the Animal badge by talking about how we care for animals and had a show and tell with their own pets, we had dogs, a Hamster and Bearded dragon come and visit us. Beavers enjoyed bringing in their personal collection of things to achieve their collectors badge, the children had a range of things to show such as Pokémon cards, football cards, LOL dolls and even Shark teeth. Beavers covered their builders and skills badge by bringing in recycled objects to build their own creation, some people built castles some built robots.

The Beavers took a trip to the nature reserve where they did bug hunts and pond dipping. Beavers had lots of fun covering their science badge by making lava lamps and dropping Mentos into coke. We ended the year by covering our cooking badge making pizzas and cooking them on the fire and building our own fires. We also covered our cycling badge, beavers had lots of fun on their bikes and scoters in the hall. We loved making christingles and having a Christmas party.

Faye, Graham, Craig, Adam and Kathryn

In 2021 we started with some online sessions, including a virtual scavenger hunt, cooking, gaming and music events. Cubs learned about the countryside code, recycling and about different forms of disability. The Cubs tried backwoods cooking, gained the cycling badge and made bird boxes from scratch using a set of instructions and DIY tools. Thanks to Austin bringing in smoke machines, the Cubs learned about how firefighters train to deal with smoke-filled rooms and look for injured people, whilst also keeping themselves safe.

Thanks, Mandi, Wes, Craig, Austin, Tathan and Robert.

Who would have thought that when I wrote the Scout report in 2019 that it would be 3 years before I would be writing a report again? Over the last 2 years, along with other things that had been planned Scouting activities have either been cancelled or moved to times when they could be done.

In 2020 some Scouts from the troop took part in the district hill walking event in Derbyshire – this took place just before the first lock down, this unfortunately would have been the last event held by either district or group/ troop for over 18 months.

At last in 2021 we were able to re start face to face scouting and some activities and in Sept the troop had a weekend camp at the hut where the Scouts had a full Scouting programme including a hike, pitching tents which they don’t normally do and cooking on an open fire.

This year district managed to hold the hill walking event in Derbyshire of which 7 scouts from the troop took part and they all enjoyed it (apart from the strong winds and loosing the odd boot in the mud!).

The good news is that apart from all the problems over the past few years the troop has grown in numbers which is a good sign. I will close now with big thanks to Lucy Dixon and Nathen Cark whim without their help and support it would be difficult to run a successful troop.
