Once again the year has been affected by the covid-19 outbreak which prevented use of the chapel for the annual OLO Remembrance Service. However, following the successful repair and rehanging of the Chapel bell and an timely meeting with Piers Hopkirk of BBC South East Today, the local news programme with trustee David Arnold on 10[th] November, our Remembrance ringing of the bell 55 times on the 11[th] November at 11.00am in memory of the 55 former pupils who gave their lives in the Second World War was filmed .

This film and the subsequent interviews became the headline item on the local early evening news that day.

At the deferred 2020Trust AGM held in November by Zoom included the Trustees vision for the future to return the Chapel structure to its former condition as built in 1960.

To this end a fundraising push was launched. As there were three other churches and chapels in East Sussex designed by the same architect, Sir Edward Maufe, they were visited to ascertain their condition and spot any problems that we might need to look out for in the future.

At the March 2021 AGM hold on Zoom the fundraising was examined and an approach made to an Old Lewesian from 1936-1941 Gerry Sutton, now living in Canada, who most generously offered to match the first £25,000 raised. Over the next four months many donations came in from about 50 Old Lewesians and the trigger donation was achieved on 13[th] July for Gerry’s matching amount.

In September, the chapel was opened to the public under the Lewes Heritage Buildings Open days scheme and the Ride and Stride event for the Sussex Historic Churches Trust and about 100 people visited the Chapel and listened to the organ and viewed the displays thus raising the profile locally of the Chapel, its history and heritage.

The decision was taken to display the Chapel silverware, a chalice and paten made by a silversmith and former Head of Chemistry the Grammar School, Ken Gourlay.

As these items were no longer in use by Priory School, with the support of the Head Teacher, a permanent loan was made to Trinity Church at St John’s, Southover which was used by the former grammar School for its church services for 30 years from the school’s opening in 1930.
