## _**CHAIRMANS REPORT**_

It’s been another exciting year across all of our sections with an extensive programme and a huge amount of activities. As always, i’m aware not to steal the thunder from our section leaders, so I will refrain from going into too much detail about what they’ve all been up to at this point and let you read on to learn more about the individual highlights within each group.

I would personally like to thank every member of the trustee board , our leadership teams, parents, helpers and Mandy Palsar our membership secretary, for their support again this year. The Scouting calendar and events really don’t happen by magic and there is so much hard work and planning that makes it all happen. We have an amazing team at 1st St Leonards who work tirelessly to make the session fun, interesting and safe. There is an old saying that “Many hands make light work”, so if you would like to be part of an amazing team, then please let us know, i’m sure your skills can be put to great use.

From a board perspective, we’ve had a busy year. You will have noticed numerous upgrades around the HQ, plus an extensive re-development of our section of the campsite a Beacon Hill. Martin assures me that all of you will no longer need to sleep in the river and that we now have a fantastic green and level surface to pitch up on. There is also a lot more development to come with a big kitchen refit on the cards for later in the year.

Due to some retirements within the Trustee team we are looking to fill a number of roles. We sadly say goodbye to Gemma Dold and Chris Jones, both have dedicated most of their adult life to Scouting and although it’s not a goodbye, it is time for a rest and recoup. The group really couldn't have asked for 2 better examples of leadership and dedication. They will be sorely missed from the team, but i’m sure they will never be too far away from the action.

Again, I would like to just thank all the parents for their continued trust and support in the group and I look forward to hearing many more stories about the exciting activities that take place over the next 12 months.

Rob Marshall Chair of Trustees

## _**GSL REPORT**_

As I write this, it marks not only the end of another fantastic year of Scouting for our group, but also the end of my time as Group Lead Volunteer after three rewarding years in the role. It’s hard to believe, but I’ve now been part of this group for nearly 18 years — first as a Kipling Cub Leader (joining to help a new leader for a quick 3months!), then as Baden Leader, and finally stepping into this leadership position. I can honestly say I have loved every single minute.

Being part of this incredible community has brought me pride, countless laughs, and some truly unforgettable memories. Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting an outstanding team of volunteers who give their time and energy so generously. A special thank you must go to Don and Rob — your dedication, friendship, and support have made all the difference. But to all the leaders and Trustees, both past and present, the group would not be what it is today without all your commitments – so a massive thank you from me!

Over the 3 years it has been one of both celebration and reflection. We proudly marked the 50th birthday of our Scout Group — an incredible milestone that speaks to the strength and legacy of Scouting in our community. But we also faced the sorrowful loss of Dave Tyler — known fondly to many as Otter or Eric. Dave was a deeply loved and respected figure in our group, and his absence has been profoundly felt. In his memory, and thanks to the efforts of our scouting community, over £550 has been raised so far for St Catherine’s Hospice via a JustGiving page. While we are unable to donate directly as a charity to another charity, it has been wonderful to see the group come together to honour Dave in this way — a true reflection of the kindness and spirit he brought to Scouting. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. Despite the highs and lows, the heartbeat of our group remains strong with nearly 150 young people being involved. It has been inspiring to see all our sections continue to thrive, offering fantastic opportunities for our young people to grow, challenge themselves, and have fun. This would not be possible without our phenomenal leadership teams — the adult and young leaders alike — who week in and week out, deliver varied and exciting programmes that keep the spirit of Scouting alive and well.

On a personal note, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to my wife, Gem, for all her patience and support throughout my Scouting journey. As I hang up my scarf for the final time and take a wellearned break after a lifetime in Scouting — starting with joining Beavers at age 6 when it first launched — I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family. With my eldest preparing to head off to university and my youngest needing ‘Dad’s Taxi’ for her many twirling training and competitions, the time feels right to step back and refocus on home life.

## _**GSL REPORT** CONT_

It truly has been a fabulous experience being part of such a fantastic and amazing group. The friendships, the teamwork, the laughter, and the shared commitment to making a difference in young people’s lives — these are the things I will treasure most. This group has helped shape me and I am endlessly proud of everything we’ve achieved together.

Looking ahead, I want to leave one final message: Scouting needs volunteers, and as a group we need more volunteers for our sections. It’s no secret that modern life is busy and time is precious, but giving even a small amount of time can make an enormous difference. Whether it’s helping to run a weekly session, managing admin behind the scenes, lending a hand at events, or just being an extra pair of eyes and ears — every role matters. More volunteers mean we can share the load, offer more to the young people, and ensure no one feels overwhelmed. You don’t need to have Scouting experience, just a willingness to get involved. The rewards are immeasurable — seeing young people grow in confidence, take on challenges, and build lifelong memories is something truly special. If you’ve ever considered stepping forward, now is the time. You’ll be joining an amazing, welcoming team and becoming part of something genuinely worthwhile.

The rest of this report offers more wonderful insights into the work of our group, with individual reports from each section highlighting their adventures, achievements, and the fun and learning that have taken place over the past year. I encourage you to read them — they’re a true celebration of what makes our group so special.

I leave the position with a great optimism for the future of our group and a final Thank you to all.

Chris Jones Group Lead Volunteer

## _**Welcome your NEW Group Lead Volunteer**_

As Chris Jones steps down over the summer, the group has set out to seek another willing individual to take the reins and responsibilities of running 1st St Leonards.

We were looking for someone who could continue to bring the team together, had great communication and organisational skills and also and most importantly, had Scouting at the heart of everything they did.

I’m extremely pleased to announce and confirm that **Jo Grover** will be taking over the helm. Jo has a wealth of experience within the Scouting network and has held positions at nearly every level across the District. We have also been fortunate enough to have her here at 1st St Leonards as a Section Leader over the past few years.

We will try and make the transition as seamless as possible over the coming months and no doubt Jo will introduce herself to you all in the near futureshe hasn'tdone so already.

Thank you Jo for taking on the responsibilities and helping us continue the great work at st 1 St Leonards, it’s a privilege to have you on the team and I personally look forward to working with you over the coming years.

Thankfully you have an incredibly supportive and active deputy in Don, who will no doubt continue to share the workload and carry on doing all the unsung herojobs around HQ.

We are lucky to have two amazing beaver colonies that meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30pm to 6:45pm and are supported by an amazing team of leaders and parents. However, as you will hear, there is certainly space for additional help if you would like to get involved.

_**AKERWOOD WILLOW**_

## _**AKERWOOD**_

Akerwood Section report Summer 2025:

Akerwood currently has 18 beavers with vacancies for 6 more children, we have 4 adult leaders and 1 young leader.

Similar to my last report for 2024 we are desperately short on adult leaders, which makes holiday planning very hard.

Following the success of our 50th celebration we had 10 beavers gain their nights away qualification and one amazing beaver gain her Chief Scouts Bronze award as well as EVERY beaver badge, a truly remarkable achievement.

Our program has used our new ‘safe’ axe throwing equipment which the beavers love using, switching between the axes and ninja stars !!

At our Halloween party the beavers made scary spider cakes as well as green slime !

For fireworks night we had a safely controlled sparkler show outside Scout HQ

We have made a few trips to the campsite, den building, practicing navigation skills and the beavers favorite of cooking marsh mallows and making s’mores !

The district campfire evening was a great success with some really good singing round the central fire.

The beavers also practiced their shooting skills with our nerf gun tin can alley shooting range.

We have also worked towards our cooking, first aid, adventurous activity and team games badges. The beavers missed our regular cardboard caving event however we did use the amazing cave facility at the campsite.

Finally another thank you to the parents and beavers that helped at our recent campsite landscaping project.

2024 -25 has been a fantastic year for Akerwood and we are really looking to forward to welcoming more beavers to our pack.

## _**WILLOW**_

Willow Beavers Section Report 2025

Willow Beavers currently have 15 children, slightly down on last year, most of whom regularly attend our meetings.

We currently have 2 leaders, 3 section assistants, one Young Leader and we've welcomed Millie who's joining us to do her Duke Of Edinburgh.

Millie has been welcomed by all our beavers and has been a pleasure to have her help out with us.

This year we have done a range of activities from caving, to archery, first aid to making smores amongst other activities.

This year we've chosen to let our Lodge Leaders pick and run an evening a term and this has been enthusiastically received by them and they enjoy the responsibility.

We took part in St George's Day and Go Beavers. This year we've given out 5 bronze awards and covered a range of badges such as first aid, hiking, explore, communication, gardening and space to name a few. We have also seen members move on to cubs and has been great to catch up with some of them and a joy to hear them are still enjoying their Scouting journey.

Carie-Louise Gray (Willow Beaver leader)

We are extremely proud of our cub packs, however again this year we are facing challenges with adult support. The sections rely on parent helpers to ensure we are able to comply with our safety and safeguarding policies but both sections would benefit from more fabulous adults to support the groups on a regular basis. We would ideally like to see a couple of extra adults for each section. Our cub packs meet on a Monday and Wednesday 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

## _**RUDYARD**_

_**KIPLING**_

## _**KIPLING**_

Kipling Cub Pack annual report.

This year has been an encouraging year for Kipling Cub Pack. We have had around 20 cubs every Wednesday evening with a small leadership team of Paul, Megan (who became an adult leader once she turned 18) and myself with regular help from Jen W and support from Nicola (one of our parents). During the year, we have also appreciated Ella as a young leader, parents and from other section leaders – a big thank you for all the help and support we’ve received.

Over the year, we have enjoyed a trip to Horsham Fire Station, overnight camp at Gummy’s in January, a very wet fire-lighting evening, a variety of craft and cooking evenings, science and a range of scouting skills! We also had representation at the Remembrance Day parade & took part in the annual District St Georges Day Parade.

One thing we have seen over the past 12 months is the importance in valuing each of our Cubs individuality and to give them the opportunity to face their challenges head on – be that a physical challenge, having a night away from home, working with others or appreciating that we are all different. It has been so encouraging to see a number of our cubs make great strides in this & hopefully, the skills they have learned and the challenges they have overcome will help to build their confidence for the future and be an example to other who might face similar challenges.

We have visited the campsite on a number of occasions to play games, have an Easter-themed hunt, make use of the caving system & try and light fires - which wasn’t helped at all by the weather. One of the highlights of the year took place at the campsite in January where we took the cubs for an overnight camp. Richard & Jo prepared a varied programme including firewood collecting, a campfire sing-song with obligatory hot chocolate, preparing lunch, an obstacle course & the vital skills of looking after your own property on camp & washing up! The cubs all had a brilliant time & were great fun to take away.

Over the year, we have handed out over 250 badges including three Chief Scout Silver Awards to Freddie W, Oliver W & Holly C. All three have not moved onto scouts but we hope they will have inspired some of the others to work towards their top awards.

The badges have covered activities as diverse as skating, music, hobbies, space and even home help! A number have earnt challenge awards towards their Silver Award and we look forward to seeing more Cubs achieve that honour in the next year.

As we look forward into the next academic year, Kipling Cub Pack again faces leadership challenges. Both Jen, who has supported us admirably over the past couple of years firstly as a parent helper then a pack assistant & I will be standing down from our current roles & with Megan starting a new course of study, what next year looks like is a little uncertain.

Our Cubs are a great bunch & if you would like to get involved on a Wednesday evening, please speak to the group leadership.

## _**RUDYARD**_

Rudyard Pack have had yet another busy and fun year. We have grown to a pack of 22 Cubs and are looking forward to welcoming new cubs to join in the fun too.

The Autumn term in 2024 kicked off with fun & games at HQ and the fun carried on for the rest of the term. Activities included campfires, archery, night hike, cooking, scary pumpkin carving and so much more engaging fun and learning (don’t tell the cubs though!). Food is always a useful and fun theme in the spring with a pancake day celebration and tasting food from around the world.

We have pitched tents, hiked, practiced our air rifle shooting, archery and axe throwing, explored backwoods cooking skills, emergency aid and attended St Georges Day Parade. With the summer weather and lighter evenings, hikes were on the agenda and fun at the campsite. In June we joined other cub packs at the Horsham District Cub Camp at our campsite where our cubs camped, romped, explored and put their scouting skills to the test in the wonderful woods of Beacon Hill. Everyone had a great time and some even got a bit of sleep! Massive thanks to Jo and the team for all the organisation.

Paddling is a regular feature on the summer programme with the group fun day on and in the water a spectacular success! You cubs were brilliant, we have another session planned on a Monday evening before we break for summer too.

Rudyard’s Leaders have thoroughly enjoyed putting on the programme for the Cubs and are looking forward for more adventures over the next year, but after a well-earned rest! However, whilst we are now in a more comfortable position with leaders, we’d never say no to an extra pair of hands, whether to make us a drink, help wash up or do 25 years as a uniformed leader! Scouting at all levels is truly amazing fun and so rewarding (for the cubs too!).

This year has seen our Scouting experiences grow from strength to strength as you will read below. Our amazing leaders provide exciting opportunities for our 10.5 to 14 year old young people on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:15pm to 9pm for Baden and 7:15pm to 9:15 for Powell.

_**BADEN POWELL**_

## _**BADEN**_

Baden have had another busy year. Although we’re a small troop, we are lucky to have a great group of scouts who are keen to get involved and try new things.

We currently have a very young troop, so this year we have been concentrating our efforts on developing our scouts in their core skills such as cooking, fire lighting, knife skills, map reading etc. Whilst also helping them to improve their teamwork abilities and problem-solving skills. We’ve also tested our scouts’ adventurous sides with activities such as caving, climbing, archery, shooting, parkour and mountain biking.

In addition to our Tuesday night meetings, some of the highlights of the year have been:

## **Jamboree on the Internet**

Baden took part in JOTI again this year – JOTI is the world’s largest digital Scout event, promoting friendship and global citizenship! The scouts joined together for 24hrs to camp at the hut enabling them to take part in the event together throughout the day and night! In that time, we made contact with 80+ scout groups, in over 25 different countries. It was a great opportunity to learn more about scouting across the world.

## **Cardboard Campout**

In November Baden scouts (and leaders) braved the cold to camp under cardboard. Whilst it was a fun night, it was also an opportunity to discuss and raise awareness of homelessness with the scouts. Everyone who took part was given the task of making their own shelter out of nothing more than cardboard boxes and parcel tape.

## **Fundraising in Memory of Dave Tyler**

Sadly, we lost Dave (Otter, Eric). As troop we have spent time remembering Dave, sharing some of our favourite memories. We also encouraged the scouts to take on a personal fundraising challenge to raise funds for St Catherines Hospice, who supported and cared for Dave (and his family) throughout his final weeks. Many of the scouts (and leaders) have risen to the challenge, but a special mention should go to Freddy, who completed a 12-mile pier to pier walk with two friends - raising £850 for St Catherines Hospice.

## **Changes within Baden leadership team**

Our capacity to run camps and additional activities has been restricted this year due the limited availability of our leadership team. And sadly, Karen and Chris, who have supported Baden for 6 and 5 years respectively, are having to step down at the end of the summer term as they take on a new exciting challenge.

We are pleased to have been joined this year by new helpers Liam, Mel and Karen who now support with running our regular Tuesday evenings, but if anyone else has time and energy to spare - the extra help is always appreciated.

## _**POWELL**_

Powell Troop have yet again had a fantastic year of Scouting. Our troop numbers are now at 30 Scouts. We have a well-balanced programme through the year giving our Scouts achieving many opportunities to gain of the challenge awards and proficiency badges. Often our Scouts are encouraged with activities outside their comfort zone, and because of the great Scouts we have they rise to the challenge facing them and gain great life skills. Here are some of the adventures Powell troop did over the last year;

Summer Camp at Pencraig, Ross on Wye, Various Kayaking sessions and trips including White water Training on the Nene white water course, 2 Weekend trips white water kayaking on the River Dart and the River Usk and teaching sessions at Southwater lake. Target sport evenings, Woggle making, Hikes and navigation exercises, Cooking skills at the campsite on open fires and at the HQ.

Winter camp sleeping in Hammocks and exploring the outdoors, Building a totally suspended assault course in the Hall,

Bug Box and Bat box making, 2-night Spring Camp at Denne Hill.

The highlight of the calendar is Powell’s Summer Camp. Last year 19 Scouts attended a week’s camp on the banks of the River Wye near the Forest of Dean. Powell explored the forest on foot visiting a sculpture trail in the forest. Went mountain biking on adventurous bike trails around the forest and then discovered how coal is mined by hand from beneath the Forest of Dean at Hopewell Colliery.

Many hours were spent using the river Wye at our campsite to kayak or to cool off from the hot sun. This year Powell are heading off to Dartmoor for their Summer Camp. We will use the River Dart bordering our campsite to expand our Kayaking skills and riding on the steam train that chuffs past our campsite field.

A huge Thank you to the Powell Leader team for yet another great year of Scouting. Thank you for giving up your free time, sharing your skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage our young people to gain so many life skills.

Martin Dold Powell Scout Troop Lead Volunteer.

Leading at Pegasus is a pleasure: the Explorers themselves make every Wednesday great fun. The unit size continues to be the largest in the District and we now have 39 Explorers as members with any 25-30 present each evening. Although we have lost some Explorers during this year due to reaching 18 or clashes with other commitments, these spaces have been quickly filled & we are regularly contacted by others wanting to join the unit – from both inside & external to, St Leonards Forest.

Our programme is designed by the unit and we have a unit exec made up of Explorers from all year groups to represent members. The last years programme has included pioneering, street orienteering, caving, fire making, cooking, hiking, shooting, sedan chair racing, first aid, beach volleyball, ice skating, parkour, climbing and bouldering. In December we held our annual Pegasus Christmas dinner which the Explorers help prepare, cook & serve and this year we also had the addition of a Pegasus band for after dinner entertainment. The event raised approximately £1600 for the unit which went towards the purchase of new climbing helmets & subsidising new unit hoodies – another exec suggestion.

Last summer we took 25 Explorers to North Wales. Our activities included white water rafting, scrambling, wind surfing, sailing, climbing, canyoning and beach volleyball. This summer we are taking 31 Explorers to the Lake District and have a packed programme lined up.

In September 20 Explorers took part in the first 24 hour camp where the unit joined up with Explorers from all over the county. The objective was to complete as many activities as possible in 24 hours and many of the unit stayed up the entire time being immersed in activities as diverse as air riffle shooting to a silent disco, to abseiling to a giant inflatable course which contributed to them winning the overall event. The unit also spent an overnight at Beacon Hill improving the 1 st St Leonards site including shifting many tons of rubble in the process.

In May we returned to North Wales and spent the weekend walking, scrambling and underground via ferrata.

There were several inter-unit walking competitions including the Downsman for which we came third in the 55 mile class and second in the 38 mile class, we also had two teams enter the Overland. Five teams also entered the London Monopoly run which has become a unit favourite.

At the start of this term it was fantastic to welcome Vicky Welsby to the leadership team working alongside Tim Kent, Graham Clayton, Mark Aylmore and myself.

None of our events could take place without the support of Helen Walden our treasurer and I am also very grateful to the 1 st SLF leaders and parents who have assisted us with various activities throughout the past year – many of which we would not have been able to do without their support. If you like the sound of our activities and would like to join the team please let me know.
