It promotes athletics and cross country working in close liason with the various athletic clubs. **during the year**|2022 has been one of the most successful years in the nearly
100 year history of the Kent Schools’ Athletic Association. We
are the current Aggregate trophy winners for both the Track and
Field championships and Boys Cross Country. We are the
holders of both of the Championship shields for the Junior Boys
and Junior Girls teams – frst presented back in 1925. Whilst we
have won both in the past, this is the frst time ever that we
have held both at the same time. It was also a year that saw us
host a long awaited ESAA Cross Country Championships at the
Hop Farm, Paddock Wood the frst post pandemic
championships for the ESAA.
In January 2022, we found ourselves hosting our Cross Country
Championships at a venue new for Kent Schools. The Hop Farm
had been chosen by us to host the ESAA championships but we
had not held an event there so it made sense for us to host a
trial event there. Whilst there were some signifcant difculties
in the planning, the venue turned out to be very successful and
gave us a lot of good ideas for the fnal details for March.
Over the fat but challenging course we had a number of high
quality races with 567 athletes competing across all of the age
groups. With the planning of Paul Hills and Angela Newark we
were able to host a full return to competition with success and
good weather. Our attempts to go digital with QR codes for
athlete registration nearly went wrong but it turned out ok in
the end! Races were won by Megan Barlow in the Junior Girls
and Oliver Head with a victory of more than 25 seconds in the
Junior Boys race. However, Annabelle Souter won by 40 seconds
a very large margin indeed. Hayden Gear of Swale (IB) , Anna
Palmer (SG) and Jack Small (SB) were our other victors. The
Senior Boys race was particularly strong and gave an indication
of what was to happen a few weeks later. Our thanks go to all
involved in staging the event and setting our year of with such
a bang.
At the Inter Counties in Reigate we won both the Senior and
Intermediate Girls, and the Senior Boys. Thanks to all involved
in selecting and team managing for that event and our other
Cross Country events in 2022.

championshipsfor thefrst time since2004.Our thanksmustbe| |---|---| March **2012** **TAR** 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance offered most loudly for both the energy and passion of our former Beths boys – Geoff Snell and Paul Hills. Over the nearly three years of planning Paul’s desire to make a successful and enjoyable course allied to the experience of Geoff Snell as a recent ESAA Assistant XC Secretary meant that the preparations were always going to create a high-quality event. Sadly, at times in the build-up the Hop Farm were not always fully organised or cooperative. Nor were other organisations and providers. Without the patience of Geoff and then Paul Allison from ESAA we might not have had a championship at all. On the day, all turned out to be very successful. The course looked fantastic – thanks to Paul, John Sanders and a range of other friends and connections from across the county and the country. We were pleased to see a number of old friends and welcome around 2000 athletes and some former champions to witness six excellent races in which Kent Schools won the overall Boys title and took the Senior boys title with Louis Small finally taking an individual victory a few years after making his debut as a footballer that could run! It was a personal joy to be asked to present the winning Trophy to our Senior Boys and a memory I will long remember. Not long after the Cross Country came to an end, we heard the news that Mike Rowbottom our Honorary Life President and Kent Schools’ legend passed away after a number of years in a care home. His funeral, attended by a number of KSAA members was a real celebration of Mike’s life and work – but did not mention so much about his athletics and Kent Schools. We are all aware that Mike was a passionate enthusiast of school’s athletics. But it was great to hear that among his most significant personal memories are of presenting medals at the Schools International, and of being awarded our highest honour of Life Vice Presidency. We all have so much to thank Mike for. For some he was their first coach, or a good friend, for others he taught us how to select and identify the key things to look for when making decisions about teams and athletes. He also provided us with many stories of t-shirts round the wrong way, fire alarms in hotels, ice creams in the summer, foil blankets in the cold and sandwich packets stabbed with biros. Mike – you were so much fun to be with and we miss you greatly. We thank you for all March **2012** **TAR** 5 ## Section D Achievements and performance that you did for Kent Schools’ and for the athletics in our wider community. Moving on to the summer we found ourselves hosting the Kent Schools’ at Medway Park, a new venue to the championships. We must note the very significant contribution made by Steve Hesketh in preparing the stadium for us to be able to use throughout the day. His preparation and coordination of the volunteers among a whole host of challenges ensured that the athletes were able to do so well on the day. The conditions were very good and saw six new Championship best performances. Our thanks go to all involved in staging the championships – especially, Iain Presnell and Brian Charlton. To all officials that gave of their time freely and with such expertise. We must note here that so many of our officials were appointed to officiate at the 2022 Commonwealth Games representing our county with such skill, commitment and professionalism. With our own Julie Roe leading from the front as Meeting Manager. We are very lucky to have the use of such expertise. At the English Schools’ in July we were met with the hottest of temperatures in Manchester. But the action on the Track for Kent Schools was equally scorching! In total we secured 21 medals including 8 Golds. Only 13 athletes out of the 70 did not score a point. Overall, we won the following: the Junior Girls with 58 points, Junior Boys with 101 points, Inter Boys 2[nd] Senior Boys 3[rd] . Overall we won the Aggregate trophy with 350 points – 316 was second place. This is the highest Kent Schools’ score ever and amounts to an average of 5 points per athlete. Huge congratulations to all of the team managers and individuals involved. To Gary Jones for mastering the operation and to our new team manager Rebecca Hawkins who made such a successful debut and offered so much to the athletes. Next year we will be in Birmingham – with many of those athletes still available for selection and participation. We look forward to what is to come. We are again grateful to Paul Nash for his kind sponsorship and support and hope that he continues to enjoy the links we have forged between him and our association for so many years. March **2012** **TAR** 6 Section D Achievements and performance Earlier in June we secured yet another victory in the annual Cunliffe Cup – against Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Our athletes performed well at the Combined Events and Race Walks Championships in their final in Bedford in late September. With both the Inter Boys and Junior Girls winning their team events. Our thanks go to each member of our committee and wider support network for their time in team managing for all of our teams. Ken Burkett and Iain Presnell are once again elected to serve on the General Committee of the ESAA and Geoff Snell continues his role as Assistant Treasurer. As the ESAA moves forward nearer to its own century we hope that our representatives on the ESAA will help, advise and guide the officers and others to ensure that the future of the Association lives on for many more years to come. 2022 was certainly something like service back to normal – with so many events and opportunities for the athletes offered by KSAA. We had a very successful year – among our most successful ever. As we near the 25[th] July 2025 the date of our founding at a Meeting in Maidstone 100 years before we need to begin to plan for commemorations and celebrations of our Centenary. We are in a strong position both within our committee and our athletes to step onwards in to our next century with energy and great confidence. KSAA continues to be relevant to the athletes, offer a great deal that others wish to be associated with and to set the standards that others seek to follow.
