Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Trust Report 2023-2024

The Trust exists for the purpose of rewarding work which increases understanding between the peoples of Britain and Ireland, or between members of the European Union, and is awarded biennially. The most recent Prize awarded (the 28[th] ) covered works published or performed during the calendar years 2022 and 2023. The first Judges’ meeting for this round took place in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on 26 April 2023, a preliminary long-list having previously been drawn up by email discussion. This was extended at the meeting, which also discussed the timetable and arrangements for the Prizegiving in spring 2024. At a further meeting at 56 Patshull Road, London NW5 2LD on 11 December 2023 the final decision was made, and arrangements finalized. (Minutes of both meetings are available if needed.)

The Award ceremony took place on 27 February 2024 at the Irish Embassy in London, where the actor and writer Adrian Dunbar presented the Prize (now worth £7.500) to Lisa McGee and the team behind the Channel Four television series ‘Derry Girls’. It was followed by a memorable dinner at the Embassy, hosted by the Ambassador Martin Fraser.

At the end of this round, in March 2024, the Prize’s Administrator Mathilde Rimbert stood down; she has been replaced by Claire McAuley.

The history of the Prize and further detailed information about it continues to be available on the website

The 29[th] Prize will cover works published or performed in the calendar years 2024 and 2025, and will be presented in Belfast in the spring of 2026. Preliminary arrangements for a draft long-list and an initial meeting are currently under way.
