The Trustees present iheir report and the financial statements for ihe year ended 5 April 2022. The financial
statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies sel out in note I to the financial
state￿￿nts and comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Finan¢ial Rcporting Standard 102 (effcctivc
January 2019) and the Provisions of the trust deed of 6 December 1972.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The RowaTh Bentall Charitable Trust R. I l is an unincorpordted irrevo¢ablc trust, consiiluled under a trust
dccd dated 6 Decembcr 1972 for charitable PULPOSCS, With assets provided by tEonard Edward Rowan
Bentall. It is a registered charity. charity number 273818.
The power of appointing new twslees was vested with the settlor during his lifetime, and is now vegtcd in
the Trustees. Oll appointment. new ttustces are provided with inforn]alion on the strLLcttwe, adKniDistration,
policies and proc¢dL￿es of the Trust and the duties of the Trustees. Where appropriate, and depending on
the existing knowledge and experience ill thc charities seclor of the incoming Trustee, any ncw Trustcc is
encouraged to consider whether they would benefit from external training.
D¢tails of the Tru8tccs who served during the year and since the year-end are set out in th¢ Rcfcrcncc and
Administration Dctails. The Truslees providc their servi¢¢s without ckngc and no trusfre8' remuncration
was paid during the year.
Ail mattcrs of policy and management are detern]ined by the Tn￿teeS who routinely meet at least once a
year and as circumstances require.
OBJECTIVES AND AcfiviTIES

The objectiv¢s of th¢ chaTity including the ￿ant n￿kIng policy ar¢ as follows.'-
The Trnstees have the power to pay or apply the in¢ome and 50 much of the ¢apital of thc Trust Fund to

withoul limitstion, the application of the Trust Fund for the Telief, maintenance, support and provision of
ameniiies of such of the forni¢r employees of Bentalls PLC (including the employees of any associafrd or
subsidiary cottLpany or any successor to them), and their widows, widowers, children and dcpcndants as
the Trustees in their discretion may consider to be in need through poverty, ill-healllL or some similar
reason.
The accumulation period ended on 6 Dcccmber 1993. From this datc, the whole of the llet available a[￿Ual
inwme has to bc distributed by the Trnslees.
The Tnlst's aim is to assist such oth¢r Ckwities as the T￿￿te¢S in their absolute discretion think fit in
achieving their aitDs by awarding grants (with rcgard to the r¢lief, maintcnance, support and provision of
amenities for such former employees of Bentalls PLC and associatcd companies and their widows.

The Trustees will consider applications (which meet its criteria for grants) under the following headings-

The Trustees have absolute discretion as to whether to approve a grant to any particular applicant and will
not give rcasons for any r¢￿SaI.
Summary of main activities undertaken for the pub]ic benefit
During the year ended 5 April 2022, the Trustees have exercised their discretion. with regard w thc
donations llLadc in th¢ year? supporting charities in South¢rn England whi¢h fa]1 within the ¢ategories (a)
to (g) mentioned above.
The Trustees have corL8idered the Charity Commission's guidance on the operation of public benefit under
the Charities Act 2011 and consider that the requirements have been met.
ACHtEVEMEf+tfS AI¥D PERFORMANCE
In the year ended 5 April 2022 the Trustees made donations totalling £56,705 tr) a total of 121 different
charitable organisations operating in a widc vari¢ty of sectors. Most of the donations were for sums of
between £250 and £1,000, the ttLOSt common sum being £250, in a¢cordan¢e with the T￿￿ees, desire to
help as many charities as possible, subject to the limitations of available resources.
The largest grant made was £3,0(M) to the charitics, Kingston & District Sca Cadct co￿$ and Retsil Tntst.
38.530/0 of the total grants made were to provide relief for those in need by reason of Youth, Age, Tll-
Hcalth, Disability, Fitmncial Hardship ur Other Disadvantsge. Detsils of the 8raDts made to instithtions
can be found in Note I I to the accounts.
The Trustees look closely at all applications put before th¢m with a view to I￿)king at the number of
potcntial bcneficiaries und are keen to ensure thaL as far as is possible. and depending on the category of
the application, grants are awarded where there is either the greatest need OT the widest benefit to the
general public.
FINANCIAL RF.VIF.W
Total unrestricted funds as at 5 April 2022 amouot to £3224,412 compared with£3,146,034 itlthe previous
year. No restrictcd funds are held as at 5 April 2022.
The Tn￿l¢eS aim to distribute the available net income as detailed in the Objectives and Activities section
of thc TTU5tccs' r#p()rt above. At tbe amiual truslee meeting, an allnual donatiim list is agrced by the
Trustees. During the year, decisions on awarding thc grants are dclegatcd to two TrustCC5. and thcse arc
confirnied by a]1 Tti)stees at the aDnual ln￿tee meeting.

The incoming income resources of the Trust for the year ended 5 April 2022 amounted lo £58.089, of
which £58,020 wa8 generated from its investments held with Eivelyn Partners. after accounting for accrued
income of £605 that rcl&tcd to thc PTLOT year. The bdlance of income relates to bank int¢r¢st and tax credits
on the investment income.
Of the incoming income resources, £56.705 was distnThuted by way of charitable gr￿tS and invesiment
mallagement expenses of £15,049, governance costs of £12.887 and suppott costs of £4.666 absorbed
£32,602. This resulted in expenditure exceeding income by £31218 for the year.
The value of the investments under management was £3.015.745 & 5 April 2022 (2021- £2.936.479). The
invcstment portfolio is under discretionary managcmcnt with the stockbrokers, who undertake a rnoderate
risk inVeSt￿ent policy and review the investsnent performance regularly with the trust¢¢s.
The1rn5fres have considered the effect of the Covid-19 pand¢mi¢ and do not consider that this will prevent
the Trust from continuing, as they do not have fiJndin8 commitments Wkth any of their donees. The Trustees
will keep the Tn￿t continuing as a going concern.

of the Tn￿t's The Trustee4 maintain a written investment policy that further details the managemenL
risk and ¢thi¢&l poli¢y of the investtnent funds.
Reserves policy

Any unrestrictd funds not committed or invested in tangible r￿ed assets ('the free reserves,) are held to
fund managcment, administration and support wsts and continuing donations ill furtherance of the
chariry's objectives.
Applications for grants. haye continued ¢lt a similar l¢v¢l to last year. Having regard to the lik¢ly levels of
incoming resources and direct charitable expenditure. the T￿￿teS are satisfied that the funds and assets at
5 April 2022 as reflected in the balance shed 8Te available and adequate for the Trustees to fulfil the
obligations of the Clwity and maintain its op¢rdtions.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended
Practice 'Ac¢ounting and RqM)rting by ChariÉies' (SORP January 2019), Financial Reporting
SL2ndard 102 and applicable United Kingdorn accounting standards. The particular accounling
policies adopted by the TTUStees are described below.

Governance costs are the administrative and management costs in support of charitAble objects.

During the year the charity made grants of £3,000 (2021. £3,000) to Kingston and District Sea
Cadet Corps of which Edward Bcnt&ll is thc Prcsident and a trusiee. The charity rnad¢ a grant of
£2.050 (2021, £1,500) to Old Bentallians Association wherc Edward Belltall 18 the President. The
chaTity Made a grant of £1,000 (2021. £1,000) to The Scientific Exploration Society where
Edward Bentall's wife is a Vice Prcsident.
