phcnylkctonuria IPKUI and similar disorders controlled by diet,. to encourage research into PKU anKI rclated disorders:
to ¢5tablish and maintain funds from which gran￿ may be made to fijrther thc chariry's objectives,. and to snvit, procure,
collect and re¢eive donations, subtscriptions. legacies and other gifts.
The Trusrtts have had regard ￿ the Charity Commission'5 8uidancc on public benefit when reviewing the chariry's aims
and objeciivcs and whrn pl8nning its activitie5.
Phcnylketonuria (PKU) is a Tllrc inheTiLcd mctaEx>lic disord￿ affecting the body'5 ability to brcak down the amino acid
phtnylalanine. Without treatment, phenylalanine accumulates in the blood and brain and Con cause ￿rioUS neurological
damage.
In the United Kingdom PKU is id¢niified through n¢wbom scr¢¢ning shonly after bitth, enabling treatTn¢nt to bEgin
early. Managcmcnt typically involves a sirict lifelong low-phenylalanine diet supported by specialist lTrw-protcin foods

NSPKU continued to operate its helpline. providing advice, infornialion and cmotional support to patients, parents,
carers and hcalthcar¢ profcSSLonals.

devclopTncni of diclary resources and educational mateiiAIs to assist individuals in rnanA8ing ihe complcx

Community engagement activities help reduce isolation and stren￿hen connections within the PKU cornmuniry. In April
2025 NSPKU hostcd a community conferen¢¢ in Cumbernauld. Gla58ow. attended by approximatcly 200 m¢mb¢rs of
rhe PKU community. The progrnmme included educational presentsti¢)n$, panel discussions and cooking demonstrations
f¢aturin8 low-proiein focrfi8.
A Wales Day Conference wlls also held in CarditT in Oclob¢r 2025, providing members with opportunitiC5 10

Research
Supporting researeh into PKU remains & key priority for NSPKU. During the year the charity establi5hcd a R&se4rch
Strategy Group. bringing togethcr patient reprts¢ntative$, &dvocAtes And clinicians to stren￿hen Ihe NSPKU r¢s¢￿h
framcwoTk and idcntify research pritiriiies. The group advises the Council of MJnJg¢ment and cnsures thAt the
experiences of the PKU ¢ommunity infoTh research activity.
The group b¢8an dcv¢loping th¢ charity's first forn￿7 Research Strategy and strength¢nin8 ￿lati1)nshIpS with healihcarc
professionals, academic ins¢ilution5 and industry partners.
In November 2024 NSPKU launched a Research Gran¢ Award 5ehcme. inviting applic&lions fur projKts b¢tw¢¢n
£5,000 artd £1 O.IMM). wilh total funding of up to £50,000. Following &sscssm¢nt by NSPKU and lis Medical Advisory

with PKU, and the long-term irnpact of sapropterin on diet quality and Caregiv￿ burden in child￿n.
Policy and Advocacy
NSPKU coniinued i($ advocacy work ro ensure that the needs of people ILVIII8 Wlth PKU arc represented in healrhcare
policy public awaTene5s initiatives.
During the year the charity en8a8ed with Ofcom reg8rdin8 prowsed changes to postal services, highli8ELtin8 the
IM￿rtanCe of reliable delivery seryiccs for individual8 who rely on spccialist dietsry pmducls.
The charity also conducted a survey of Scottish members regarding their experienc&s of metabolic setvices. Re4x)nses
indicated ¢on¢ern5 about ¢on5iSt¢ncy of services and access to treamients, pBrticularly sapropt#in for adults. In
response. the chan'ty began plat]ning an advocacy event in the Scottish Parlikmeni.

Th¢ Medical Advisory P8n¢l IMAP) continued to provide expert odvic¢ to the Cguncil of Mana¥ement on clinical.
dieteiic and psychological aspects of PKU care across the UK.
Th¢ paT]el includes patient r¢pTG8¢ntativ¢s alongside expetienc¢d clinicians dietitians. Its work supports high
standards of clinical care. strengthens engagcment with PKU clinics and facilitates dialogue with .5pccialis¢ food and
fonnula manufacturcrs.
DHPR deficiency
Th¢ ¢harity, with th¢ advic¢ from LliniLi>m4 conf￿e￿ thaL support for DHPR d¢ficicncy was within Its Lharilttblc
objcclives. DHPR deficicncy is one of ihe BH4 deficiencies thai can initially pre*nt with raised phenylalanine levels on
newburn gL'reenin¥. Awareness.ra]5in￿ activities highlighted the syrnptorns, dI8￿0$1S Jnd treulmeni pathways for this
rarc condition. Thc charity is coniinuing to develop support for paiienis and familics affected by DHPR defjeitncy.

operating expenditure, currently Cstimated at approximatcly £140,000. The Truslces consider that maintaining r¢s¢rv¢s

incorporated on 27 April 1976 and rc8isrered with the Charity Commi.48ion on 16 June 1977.
The charity is govcrntd by it5 Mcmorandum and Artitles of Association. During the year thc Trustees undertook a
review ol'the charity's Articles of Association to ensure they r¢mained consistent with modern company law and charity
g0v¢rn￿ce practLCC. Followins thi5 fcvLCW the Tjustees recommended aijopting reviscd Articles of Association. The
propnsed chang¢s wcr¢ r¢port¢d to th¢ Charity Commissiofl and permission was granted for their adoption. On I I
October the revised ArtiGles were fornially adopted by a resoluiion of th¢ mrnibers of the Chariry at an Extraordinary
Gencral Mecting held in Cardiff.

Trustees. who are also directors for the purposes of company law. apptsinLed in Accordance with thc kniclc5 of
A8SQClation. Tru51¢¢5 are typically drawn from ihe PKU community or from individuals with rclevant professional
cxpertise. All the Trnstees are volunteer5.
During the year the Council of Management undertook a recmitment pro¢c5S to identify additional tnjslees, recognising
the value of 5tr¢ngthening the range of skills and expEricncc available to the charity. Applications were received froTr]
tn¢mb¢r5 of the PKU community and candidates were interviewed by a pan¢1 of trustees. Thc Council considered th¢
importance of ensuring T¢pr¢s¢n¢atiQD from ￿rO&S the PKU community and maintaining a balonce of cxpericnce within
the board. New trUS￿eS receive itifonnaiion Bix)ut the chgrity's work and th¢ir rcsponsibilities as ttutees as part of thc
induction prow.
