Dear Members

Welcome ladies to our 2023 conference, and how lovely to be in historic Stratford Upon Avon. Thank you everyone for being here.

Since last year, we have seen King Charles 111 crowned, and I know many of our clubs joined in with celebrations in honour of the event. Maureen Harwood our Treasurer, along with her husband Derrick, who many of you know, was in fact lucky to have a place outside

Buckingham palace on the day.

Three NAWC lunches were also held across the country in honour of the occasion. One at Haydock with the North West ladies, one at The West Midlands Gold club, and one in London, at the Royal Albert Hall. The London lunch also included a tour which was interesting, and we received excellent feedback. All the ladies that attended enjoyed themselves. Myself and Maureen attended all three lunches, and it was lovely to spend time

with members, and catch up with friends.

The NAWC committee have been having regular meetings as usual over the last year, and have been keeping an eye on things. We did as we reported last year lose some clubs during the pandemic, but many of our clubs are going strong and in fact have some new members.

As always the year ahead may present some challenges but the committee and staff will do our best to move forward, and we look forward to upcoming carol concerts later in the year.

Promoting ourselves needs to be top of our to do list, so we can encourage more ladies out there to join our wonderful association and help keep our numbers up. Fundraising also would help our coffers, and we have our Grand draw this autumn so if you can all encourage

your fellow members to support this by buying some tickets that would be appreciated.

All that remains is to wish you a Happy Conference, and happy & successful year within your clubs

Chris

## **EXECUTIVE COMMITEE**

The Executive Committee is the governing body of NAWC on which every local Association has an elected representative and the Single Clubs have four appointed representatives.

During the Coronovirus pandemic the meeting of the Executive Committee which usually met in London each May was cancelled.

It was then reinstated to a Zoom meeting instead for those who could attend back in July 2021, the committee was at conference 2022, and a further zoom meeting was also held in March 2023. With fewer associations now, zoom is a more viable option at present.

## **CHAIRMAN Chris Burton**

Following South East Essex, North Warks, & East Herts closure, the three remaining associations delegates and the single club reps for the period 1[st] April 2022-31[st] March 2023 were as follows:

## **EXECUTIVE DELEGATES**

HERTS LEA VALLEY ASSOC

Sandra Batty LIVERPOOL & DISTRICT ASSOC Pat Blair SELNEC ASSOC Barbara Hampson

Also in attendance at such meetings on line would be:

NATIONAL VICE-CHAIRMAN HEAD OFFICE STAFF HON TREASURER SINGLE CLUB REPS AND ANY OBSERVERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.

## **SINGLE CLUB REPRESENTATIVES** :

REGION 1 REGION 2 Joan Bramley Mary Bird

REGION 3 REGION 4 POSITION VACANT Janice Bayliss

## **MEMBERSHIP**

As was reported last year, due to the Covid pandemic we lost around 750 members in 23 Clubs and some associations also finished. At present we have approx.1500 fully paid up members in 48 clubs

## **INSURANCE SCHEME**

All current clubs belong to the NAWC scheme. There have been no claims within the past 12 months. Each year we look around and negotiate to get the best renewal price.

## **STAFF FOR 2022/23**

## **FINANCE AND GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE**

The Committee act as Trustees to the Association and met regularly during the past year to examine the income and expenditure of NAWC together with estimates for the future.

Meetings in 2022/2023 were held via ZOOM and also at Head Office. Continuing to hold some meetings over ZOOM platform does save the association some money with officer travel costs.

1. Of National Importance

2. Not been discussed at Conference in the previous 5 years 3. To be worded correctly

No changes were needed to the standing orders over the last 12 months.

CONFERENCE ARRANGEMENTS COMMITTEE MEETING WAS HELD AT HEAD OFFICE IN AUGUST 2022.

## **NO CONSTITUTION CHANGES WERE NECCESSARY**

Head office helped to fund two **workshops** for Herts Lea Valley association, one in April 2022, and one in March 2023. Reports below by Maureen Harwood.

## **Saturday 2nd April 2022**

52 ladies from Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Kent and Essex came together for the first HLV workshop since 2019. Held at Capel Manor, Enfield. Four classes were again on offer:

**Kokedamas** the Japanese art of a hanging basket. **Steam Punk** back by popular demand. Linda Starkey, a Vice-Chairman of NAWC took this class. The ladies made a small wall plaque using a pre-cut base and decorating with various bits of metal then painting silver. **Voile flowers** , this was a lovely craft and a present for Easter. Then **Easter Cup Cakes** with Sybil Hammond. Lunch was on offer in the on-site restaurant or you could have brought your own sandwiches, Capel Manor were very flexible on this. A very enjoyable Saturday.

**Saturday March 18th 2023**

Once again we were able to hold our Workshop at Capel Manor and as usual we had been given a discount and with the grant from Head Office we were still able to run the day at a very reasonable price. Fabegi𝑒́ eggs, Paper sculpture, Jewellery and Clock Cards were on offer and as always members chose two classes. Some

8

of the ladies who made the hedgehogs in the Paper Sculpture class have taken this skill back to their clubs and made a club night of it. Lunch was at 12.30 and ladies had a chance to eat and take a look at the magnificent gardens and animal centre.

## **FUND-RAISING PROMOTIONAL COMMITTEE MEETING**

**&**

## **FUND RAISING:**

Most branches of NAWC raise money for many good causes but NAWC as a registered Charity in its own right, relies heavily on the goodwill of members to raise funds to keep the organization viable.

The total of monies raised in the **Grand Draw** after payment of prizes, cost of printing and lottery registration was £737.80 for 2022/2023.

The **Home Counties Festival** of Carols and Christmas Songs took place in December, and made a profit of £405.00 for 2022/2023.

**The Autumn Fund-Raising Appeal**

Due to lockdown and not meeting for a year we decided to continue with The Marie Curie charity, the proceeds of which were split equally between the charity and ourselves unless otherwise stated the amount as at the end of March 2023 was £165.00 To date the Marie Curie donation stands at £638.50

## **78[th] ANNUAL CONFERENCE**

**The Conference was held in September 2022 at the Marriott Hotel in Waltham Abbey.**

Conference started on Thursday evening with a welcome by our Chairman, and a lovely dinner. Maureen Harwood then hosted musical bingo with the songs of Abba, a sing along naturally took place.

Friday we were joined by 51 day visitors from the local area in Hertfordshire, and there were many stalls and craft items for sale. All our usual raffles and the guess the weight of the cake and contents in the jar went down well.

The conference itself started with our banner parade and a morning reading, the resolutions from Head Office then followed. All passed.

**The conference Competition** was a handmade piece of jewelery.

The afternoon session was our AGM, and then after the coffee break, we had a speaker.

The day closed with raffles and thanks, and there was 78 in attendance.

## **LUNCHES HELD DURING SUMMER 2022**

## **LUNCH AT THE WEST MIDLANDS GOLF CLUB - Held with a good attendance**

## **LUNCH AT HAYDOCK GOLF CLUB – Held with a good attendance**

**A London event could not be sorted out in 2022**

## **CAROL CONCERTS – 2022**

Two concerts were held in December.

The first in London at The Salvation Army Hall in Oxford street, and although there was good attendance with over a 100 ladies, we could certainly take more ladies and their friends. The discussion of moving the event to a Saturday afternoon took place to help encourage better attendance next year. A wonderful concert took place, with the band and readers and choir.

The Liverpool concert took place at the Adelphi hotel, and there was a two course Christmas lunch on offer for those who wanted it prior to the concert. A lovely afternoon was had, with Chris Burton the NAWC chairman in attendance, and Jay and the choir.

********************************************************************************************** *************

## **NAWC Circulation and News & Views**

We restarted News & Views in the second half of 2022, and due to the cost of printing it has been decided to publish only twice a year but the look is very professional as outside printers are producing the booklet for us. Head office removed the large photocopier we had 2 years ago in order to save office costs. The reports however that we have had back from members have been very favorable, but we do need more reports and articles from the clubs.

11

Various email newsletters have been sent to contacts, and we do as much by email as possible now, and only post to those club secretaries etc that are not on email.

Twice a year there will be a post mail out to all, which will contain

the news & views and various other NAWC information, and a Christmas card to all clubs in the winter season.
