## **HUTTON & SHENFIELD CHORAL SOCIETY** ## **REPORT AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR** **1 AUGUST 2022 – 31 JULY 2023** ## **HUTTON & SHENFIELD CHORAL SOCIETY** ## **Annual report for the year to 31 July 2022** Hutton & Shenfield Choral Society is governed by a Constitution dated 17 January 1972, as subsequently amended on 7 October 1991 and again on 29 October 2001. The Charity is registered with the Charity Commissioners, No 273001. The Charity’s postal address is 223 Mundon Road, Maldon, Essex CM9 6PW and its website address is www.hscs.org.uk. A Committee of Officers and ordinary members comprise the trustees of the Charity. The Officers are elected annually and the ordinary committee members are elected for terms of three years. During the year the Committee was as follows: Richard Randall (Chairman) Robert Scott (Vice Chairman) Esme Burton (Secretary) John Kelk (Treasurer) Pat Clark Jane Davenport Deborah Gill Suzanne Kuyser Jenny Pennick The Independent Examiner is Christopher Watkins. ## **Objects, Organisation and Activities** The Society aims to foster the public’s knowledge and appreciation of music, particularly choral music, by the study, practice and public performance of such music. In furtherance of these aims, the Society rehearses from September to July and usually stages 4 or 5 concerts each season for which it engages professional soloists and orchestral players. Members of the Society pay an annual subscription fixed at the Annual General Meeting and social events are held during the year for members and friends to help raise some additional funds. ## **Review of Progress and Achievements** Looking back at last season, for me the Sea Symphony was remarkable, especially the size of the choir and orchestra! Christmas was emotional for being the first for two years thanks to Covid. Parking was difficult and the bad weather meant attendance was down, but the singing by the young Ukrainian girl was exceptional. The February Come and Sing attracted a lot of singers (though very cold in the church!) The G & S evening, though not profitable, went very well, as did the Nelson Mass. The July concert was fantastic, though very difficult in rehearsal. And now we know that it was the last performance for our dear Angela Harris, who had been a member of the choir almost since its inception. Altogether a great season and well done everyone. We are so fortunate to have two amazing musicians in our Choir Director and Accompanist, working so hard with us. I am very grateful to both. The people on the committee are very tslented and contribute so MUC￿ as do others in many ways. resourcing music scores. running the lending librdry, makj.ng offee and fund Tai5ing etc. I would es￿iallY like to thank David. who has put in so much work to obtain the £8K grant that will enable us to put on the big Christm&s concert in the BrentW￿ Centre this year. I must also give thanks to SuzanTK and Jenny Nvho are Slewing down from the committee this year but have contnbuted so much during their tsme on IL We still need help with publicity. so if anyone feels they can contribute in this way. please speak to me. We must all put great effort into selling ttckets for our concerts. especially the two big and ex￿nSive ones of this season. V¢rdi R¢qui¢m and the Chrisima5 celebration with the Chelrnsford Ballet WKI a primary choir. Everyone can play their part here and help ensure our Choir continues to thrive and deliver our high standaTd of mw$}￿1 t￿rfOrMance. The Society’s fixed assets comprise equipment (music stands and falls, conductor’s podium and a music library) the total costs of which were written off immediately to revenue. The Society’s library and keyboard are insured through the Making Music scheme under a property clause with a maximum payment of £50,000 and a limit of £5,000 for any single item. ## **Trustees’ remuneration and expenses** No remuneration directly or indirectly out of the funds of the charity was paid or payable for the year to any trustee or to any person known to be connected with any of them. No reimbursement of expenses has been made or is due to be made to any of the trustees in respect of the year. ## **1. Grants** A grant of £1,000 was received during the year from Brentwood Arts Council. [Note also that a sum of £8,160 was received from Brentwood Borough Council in respect of a Levelling-Up Grant for the Christmas concert next season.] ## **2.
