## **Golden Lion Children’s Trust**

## **Trustees’ Report 1[st] April 2023 – 31[st] March 2024**

PO Box 400, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4RZ.

The Golden Lion Children’s Trust remains an unincorporated charity, as set up under the Trust Deeds, in accordance with the Golden Lion Children’s Trust Constitution and policies, which are reviewed and updated annually.

The founders of the GLCT in 1973 believed businesses and organisations could help children with special needs in so many ways. This belief is continued by the Trust today, in the belief that the most important asset the charity has is its reputation.

In spite of the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic during April 2021 – March 2022, the GLCT has survived but in common with so many other charities and organisations has not found the past 12 months easy. In spite of continued efforts by the Trustees and willingness to help on the part of many individuals and Friends of the Golden Lion Children’s Trust together with support in various ways from business partners, there has been a noticeable challenge in fund-raising events and favourable outcomes when applying for grants and awards, and even face-to-face fund-raising. This disappointment has been shared with other charities and regardless of their size all seem to be experiencing the same difficulties.

The past twelve months have been both challenging and in some ways disappointing for GLCT but the charity continues to support children with special needs and disadvantaged young people throughout Sussex, and during the past 12 months has managed to arrange 30 projects and for them, with 10 fund-raising events. Schools report that co-vid cases continue to be problematic both impacting pupils and staff. Throughout the year arrangements have had to be cancelled at relatively short notice and this has really impacted on charities, GLCT included.

## **Business Partners and Supporting Organisations; Projects & Events**

GLCT continued to enjoy membership of **Gatwick Diamond Business** (GDB) networking organisation. Face to face meetings once again became the norm and the support and encouragement of fellow members very helpful. Sharing information is invaluable – for example re grant offers; knowledge of suppliers for equipment required by schools; encouragement between all charities coping with similar post co-vid difficulties, etc.

**CAE** generously agreed to GLCT using a meeting room in their Gatwick offices each month.

2

Other businesses offering support or helpful advice include **Easistore, Crawley** ; **ExTech** ; **Gatwick Manor Hotel; Ice Media** . Disappointingly GLCT received news that years of using storage units at Deers Leap, Saint Hill had to end but our links with the two companies ( **Southern Sheeting Supplies** and **SEFab, Saint Hill** ) remain, and **StriveAV** generously offered storage facilities at their new warehouse in E.Grinstead.

Invitations to **BBBC (Big Business Breakfast Club)** in Brighton gave GLCT opportunities to network with several companies who have subsequently offered support.

Hybrid working continued in many companies but thankfully most links with the Golden Lion Children’s Trust remained although experienced contacts may no longer be available.

Maintained contacts enabling GLCT groups to enjoy visits include:

**PricewaterhouseCoopers** with their annual pantomime at Peacock Theatre, Holborn; **Hawth Theatre** welcomed a group of GLCT families to ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (thanks to money

raised by Copthorne Village Golf Club);

**Cineworld Crawley** - an exclusive ‘relaxed’ screening of ‘Trolls Band Again’ ;

**Glyndebourne Opera House** included GLCT once again in their ‘Performance for Schools’ project – with pupils from 3 SEN schools enjoyed ‘L’elisir d’amore’- a full scale production, which so often is the first opportunity SEN children have to enjoy live theatre - drama, music, etc.

**Bluebell Railway ‘Santa Special’** - children from 8 SEN schools plus children from Peanut Ward, Queen Victoria Hospital, E. Grinstead

**Drusilla’s Zoo, Alfriston** ;

## **Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre**

**Hollywood Bowl, Crawley** – visit for SEN children with severe mobility issues **South of England Society –** over 100 young teenagers from 4 SEN schools enjoyed South of England Summer Show.

**Merlin’s Magic Wand** (the charity arm of Merlin Entertainment) included GLCT as a Preferred Partner once again – and school groups enjoyed visits to **MMW SeaLife, Brighton;**

Fund raising was helped by former **British Caledonian** staff continuing links with GLCT, arranging fund-raising opportunities including flights in G-CHIP (the Piper Cherokee housed at Shoreham Airport and bearing GLCT logo!)

**Bikers Toy Run** took place in December; **Tilgate Forest Golf Club** Captain’s Day invited GLCT as their Chosen Charity for the 12[th] year;

3

**RSA MoreThan (Horsham)** staff continued to liaise and help in their own time as well as donating many toys for a Christmas project; **West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service** invited GLCT to run a stall at 4 station Open Days (chance to

The annual GLCT project to deliver sacks of presents to children of families in crisis took place this year supporting fewer children. Collaborating with **Greenaway Foundation** helped with information about children needing support and toys; **MORE Radio** generously included GLCT in their Annual Toy Collection; which in turn resulted in **County Mall, Crawley** inviting GLCT to run a stall over the Black Friday weekend at the end of November.

However instead of donating toys, etc for so many children as in previous years, GLCT opted to address the ‘Clothing Poverty’ issue. This problem had been commented on for some months by so many schools and agencies together with reported increase in other charities doing similar projects delivering toys, etc in the same areas.

By working with local branches of 2 national retailers GLCT arranged vouchers for each child named by school SENCOs (Special Needs Co-Ordinators), domestic abuse team workers and other agencies. Families chose either a clothing or footwear voucher; had at least a month to shop, and if transport was an issue a national bus company generously donated bus tickets to GLCT – although these were not widely distributed as the Government introduced a reduced bus fare system during that December! The project was felt to be a great success as 407 local children were eventually supported with a voucher each for items they felt were needed.

This project was made possible through generous grants and donations from Gatwick Airport Community Trust and Sussex Community Foundation. Feedback from the families and the delivery teams was passed on to grant-makers, as this is always of interest to them.

A generous grant from the Light Fund enabled GLCT to arrange a day at **Bowles Activity Centre,** near Groombridge for young teenagers from two local SEN schools. Each activity was instructor -led and mostly involved experiences the pupils had not tried before.

Returning to near-normal following the co-vid pandemic thanks to a strong team of Trustees, Friends of GLCT and business connections, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust has remained positive during April ‘23– March ’24. By continuing this way during the next 12 months it will enable more annual favourites and new projects to be arranged for the benefit of children with special needs and disadvantaged young people we are privileged to support.
