Golden Lion Children’s Trust
Trustees’ Report 1[st] April 2022 – 31[st] March 2023
PO Box 400, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4RZ.
The charity remains an unincorporated charity, as set up under the Trust Deeds, working in accordance with the Golden Lion Children’s Trust Constitution and policies, which are reviewed and updated annually.
The founders of the GLCT in 1973 believed businesses and organisations could help children with special needs in so many ways. Their belief is maintained by the Trust today and the most important asset the charity has is its reputation.
Coronavirus continues to cause problems in schools – impacting staff as well as children, families etc. However thanks to the continued efforts of Trustees, Friends of the Golden Lion Children’s Trust, many individuals and support in various ways from business partners together with fund-raising efforts and success in achieving grants and awards the Golden Lion Children’s Trust has continued through the past 12 months to arrange 27 events and projects.
Business Partners and Supporting Organisations; Projects & Events
Communication between business partners and GLCT continued in spite of many staff still working at home, rather than in offices. GLCT continued to enjoy membership of Gatwick Diamond Business (GDB) networking organisation. In general face to face business meetings were slowly re-established together with a mix of virtual meetings, which most feel work well if the group know each other, not so successful between strangers. Help and advice was readily offered by Easistore, Crawley; ExTech; Gatwick Manor Hotel; Ice Media; Southern Sheeting Supplies and SEFab, Saint Hill.
The link with former British Caledonian staff continued and fund-raising events were naturally limited. RSA MoreThan (Horsham) staff continued to offer help as needed. PwC’ s London office produced an excellent version of their ‘Babes in the Woods’ pantomime and generously invited GLCT to bring a group to enjoy a performance. Merlin’s Magic Wand (the charity arm of Merlin Entertainment) invited GLCT through their Preferred Partner Scheme to make two visits to Legoland Windsor Resort with groups of children with special needs.
Other visits during the year included Harry Potter Studios; ‘Dinosaur World Live’ and ‘ a production of ‘Peter Pan’ at the Hawth; Diggerland Rochester; to watch ‘Minions’ at Cineworld Crawley; to enjoy a full scale production of the opera ‘ Marriage of Figaro’ at the world-famous opera house Glyndebourne; and a morning on the Bluebell Railway Santa Special steam train.
2
Annual favourites gradually returned and included a large group enjoying a day at South of England Show; and four visits to Hickstead International Show-jumping events.
Face to face fundraising was still restricted because of the on-going co-vid situation but included the BCal Reunion BBQ ; Tilgate Forest Golf Club Captain’s Day (with GLCT as their chosen charity for another year!); fire station Open Days at Worthing, Crawley and Haywards Heath; and a collection at Newick Bonfire Parade.
The annual Bikers Toy Run took place on first Sunday of December. And the Golden Lion Children’s Trust were delighted that the invitation to be the chosen charity of Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival was held over from pre-covid times. This resulted in the 12’ tree on the altar steps being gloriously decorated by Haskins Garden Centre, Snowhill and was quite simply stunning. However the Sunday evening carol service and fund-raising efforts during that afternoon were marred by the sudden, unexpected heavy snowfall - deterring many of the anticipated congregation from attending the events. However the High Sheriff of West Sussex and his wife did manage to struggle through the chaos on the roads, to lend their support and enjoy the evening with several of the GLCT.
The Annual GLCT Christmas Special deliveries project supported 407 individual local children with individually chosen toys, books or games. Teams of helpers worked in months leading up to the event, choosing, buying, sorting, phoning, labelling and packing so that on the day sacks were delivered as arranged with families. By collaborating with the Greenaway Foundation team and other agencies (e.g. domestic abuse agencies, social services, probation, etc.) and school SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinators), the project was once again judged to be a great success.
Valuable feedback from families and the delivery teams was passed on to grant-makers, such as Gatwick Airport Community Trust, Sussex Community Foundation, and Voucherline who had generously donated grants towards the cost of the project.
Although the co-vid pandemic has still limited GLCT activities, having a strong team of Trustees together with supportive Friends of GLCT and business connections, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust remains positive that during April ‘22– March ’23 it should mean more annual favourites and new projects will gradually be arranged to benefit children with special needs and disadvantaged young people GLCT are privileged to support.
