As the charty's trustees. you are responsible for the preparation of the
acKounts in aQWrdan with the requirements of the Charities Acl 2011
('the Acr).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out
under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carying out my examination, I
have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission
under section 145{5)(b) of the Act.

## **Golden Lion Children’s Trust**
## **Trustees’ Report 1[st] April 2020 – 31[st] March 2021**

The charity remains an unincorporated charity, as set up under the Trust Deeds, working in accordance with the GLCT Constitution and policies, which are reviewed and updated annually.
The founders of the GLCT in 1973 believed businesses and organisations could help children with special needs in so many ways. Their belief is maintained by the Trust today and the most important asset the charity has is its reputation.
In spite of the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic during the twelve months April 2020 – March 2021, the GLCT has survived thanks to three main factors – continued efforts of the Trustees and of many individuals and Friends of the Golden Lion Children’s Trust; support in various ways from business partners; and achieving grants and awards, in addition to fundraising efforts, albeit in a much-reduced form.
Once again the past twelve months have been incredibly difficult and disappointing for GLCT. Usually the aim of the GLCT is to support children with special needs and disadvantaged young people throughout Sussex, with approximately 50 projects and events in one year. This past year has seen GLCT arrange two projects only, although various ones have been set up optimistically only to face the need to cancel them, sometimes at short notice. But GLCT admin work has continued.
## **Business Partners and Supporting Organisations; Projects & Events**
Although majority of companies closed their offices and staff worked from home, communication continued between them and GLCT, although in a much reduced manner. Through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies two Horsham-based links (RSA MoreThan and CMed) offered GLCT Easter eggs for children. Because majority of schools were closed due to co-vid the eggs were donated to children at Orchard House Respite Home, Cuckfield and Peanut Ward, Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.
GLCT continued to enjoy membership of **Gatwick Diamond Business** (GDB) networking organisation. Face to face meetings were not possible but support of fellow members was very helpful. Exchanging information re grant offers, for example, and from time to time knowledge of suppliers for equipment required by schools was invaluable.

The link with former **British Caledonian** staff continues although fund-raising events were naturally limited. Contact with **Matthews (Sussex) Ltd** was maintained. **Merlin’s Magic Wand** (the charity arm of Merlin Entertainment) invited GLCT to be a Preferred Partner once again – but sadly no visits to theme parks took place. **PwC’** s London office could not work on their annual pantomime and there were no GLCT visits to pantomime or cinema as all such public buildings remained closed. **RSA MoreThan** Horsham office staff continued to keep in touch and offer help as soon as it was needed as did some **Titan Travel** staff.
As annual events were cancelled GLCT were invited to attend when re-scheduling is possible. Certain businesses did continue in a reduced form and were helpful as the GLCT had need for advice including Easistore, Crawley; ExTech; Gatwick Manor Hotel; Ice Media; Purple Logistics; OCS; Southern Sheeting Supplies and SEFab, Saint Hill.
The second GLCT project that did take place in 2020/21 was the delivery of sacks of presents to 372 children of families in crisis. This was made possible through generous grants and donations from Gatwick Airport Community Trust, RSA MoreThan, Sussex Community Foundation, Wellesley Charitable Foundation, and Voucherline together with a generous online fund-raising effort by many of the bikers who support the Toy Run in other years.
Working through autumn to buy toys on line as well as sale bargains from shops that were managing to open; renting storage units where preparing individual sacks of presents was possible with only two people working at any one time; working directly with families and collating information with Greenaway Foundation team; and 18 teams of helpers collected sacks from a local primary school hall, who then spent the morning delivering the gifts as prearranged with families facing a very bleak Christmas and recommended by school SENCO (Special Needs Co-Ordinators), domestic abuse team workers and other agencies, the project was felt to be a great success.
Feedback from the families and the delivery teams was passed on to grant-makers, as this is always of interest to them, especially during co-vid times.
In spite of the effects of co-vid pandemic resulting in limited charity activities, having a strong team of Trustees supporting each other plus Friends of GLCT and business connections, the Golden Lion Children’s Trust has remained positive during the twelve months April ‘20– March ’21. That positivity will continue during the next year when hopefully annual favourites will again be arranged for the benefit of children with special needs and disadvantaged young people we are privileged to support.
