Legal and administrative information

Lewes and District Visual Arts Association (LADVAA) of Paddock Lane, Lewes BN7 1TW is registered with the Charity Commissioners (No: 288661). The governing document for the charity is the constitution of LADVAA dated 15 October 1982 (amended on 9 September 1983).

Authority for investment powers are laid out in the constitution where such objects allow for investment of monies held by the association that are not immediately required. The income and expenses relating to the charity are shown under the heading “LADVAA” on page 5.

The charity is administered by an executive committee. The members of the committee who served during the year were:

The members of the executive committee are elected at the annual general meeting of the association and hold office until the end of the next annual general meeting whereby they are eligible for re-election. The executive committee may also co-opt not more than four members of the association who shall serve until the end of the next annual general meeting. Co-opted members shall be entitled to vote.

The executive committee of LADVAA are also the executive committee of the property at No’s 1 and 2 Paddock Studios, Paddock Lane, Lewes which is registered with the Charity Commissioners (No. 272264). This property is a permanent endowment and is vested in the Official Custodians for Charities. The income and expenses relating to the charity are shown under the heading “Paddock Studios” on page 5.

The executive committee are of the opinion that in these particular circumstances the most appropriate presentation is to combine both in a single set of accounts.

The statement of assets and liabilities shows the Paddock Studios valuation as that for insurance purposes.

Objects and aims of the charities for public benefit

The principal objectives of the charities are to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in the appreciation of the art and science of visual arts including practical participation in them such as the holding of lectures, classes, seminars and exhibitions.

The executive committee confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities.

Activities and achievements

This has been our first full year back from covid measures and the studios are up and running in a normal fashion, even though we are still advising that no one should attend the studio, if they have any symptoms whatsoever and that the main studio should be ventilated regularly.

The class timetable is full and we took part in Artwave.

We ran our largest ever Booksale which raised a record £580 for the Paddock as well as raising a similar sum for the Red Cross earthquake appeal.

Financial review

Total receipts for LADVAA amounted to £7,271 (2022 - £5,970). Total payments amounted to £31,706 (2022 - £912) leading to a decrease in reserves of £24,435 (2022 increase of £5,058).

Total receipts for Paddock Studios amounted to £52,484 (2022 - £17,466) which included a donation of £38,350 from Lewes & District Visual Arts Association. Total payments amounted to £52,484 (2022 - £17,466).

During the year the following amounts were reimbursed to members of the Executive Committee for expenses incurred on behalf of the charities.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF LEWES AND DISTRICT VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION AND NO'S 1 AND 2 PADDOCK STUDIOS

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Lewes and District Visual Arts Association including No's 1 and 2 Paddock Studios for the year ended 31 August 2023.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1 accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or 2 the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

3 the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
