THE BRISTOL AREA KIDNEY PATIENTS, ASSOCIATION
TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
Year ended 31st December 2024
The trustees are pleased to present their annual report and financial statements for the charity for
the year ending 31 December 2024.
Chairfs report
This last year has flown by, and I can't believe it's time for our AGM.
Throughout this last year we have strived to work for the best outcome possible for BAKPA as
charity and for the patients and wards.
This last year we have supplied dialysis patients with stress balls in the shape of a kidney to help
strengthen their fistulas, we have contributed towards the cost of setting up Kidney Beam along
with our fellow KPA'S in Gloucester, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall for the patients of the South West.
This is an online fitness program that is free for patients to join and do in the comfort of their own
homes.
BAKPA held two coffee mornings- one in Weston Super Mare and the other in Southmead. At
these events we raise money by selling cakes, tea and coffee and have a tombola table. We love to
meet members who come along, so please do look out for our next one and if you can, come along
and say hello.
BAKPA sponsored the Bristol transplant games team with a very smart new kit, that was worn with
pride throughout last year's games.
McAllister house had a few finishing touches, the kitchen was painted to brighten the room up and
garden furniture bought and assembled ready for the Summer season. These jobs were completed
by some of the committee members.
Hales House had a very much needed garden make over with new fencing. The last time the garden
had a makeover was around 15 years ago so, this was very much needed to keep it easy to maintain
and a pleasant place for our guests to stay. The two bedrooms at the property also had a makeover
with new carpets and curtains and art work on the walls.
I look forward to seeing what this year brings our way.

Objectives and activities
Objects
The objects of the charity are..
I. To Supplement the service provided by Southmead Hospitalls Renal Units for the treatment, welfare
and comfort of its patients by providing such facilities. buildings and equipment as the Association may
decide are required from time to time for that purpose.
2. To provide recreational facilities, including holiday accommodation, and arrange social occasions for
the Association s members, at the Management Committee's discretion.
3. To assist Southmead Hospital s Renal Department in any way that may be within the capacity of the
Association to offer from time to time.
4. To arrange and provide for the holding of public exhibitions, meetings, lectures and other promotional
events in support of the Association s work, the work of Southmead Hospital s Renal Units and kidney
research and organ donation for transplantation.
Activities
We achieve these objects through our work in partnership with Southmead Hospital Renal Department
and their five Renal Dialysis Units.
Our meetings are regularly attended by Medical Consultants from Southmead Hospital Renal Department,
one of whom is our President. This keeps us updated on the Departmenvs activity which includes
transplant statistics for the unit which is currently leading the country in movement toward organ
donation. Other issues reported relate to local and nation31 policy updates, staffing changes, donor peer
mentoring and collaborative ways in which we can support their work.
BAKPA has two properties purchased for the benefit of renal patients. Hales House, a two-bedroomed
house in Bristol and McAllister House, a three-bedroomed house in Torquay. We continue to ensure
these are well maintained and continue provide valued accommodation for patients and relatives.
On World Kidney Day in March an awareness day was held at Southmead Hospital with a table manned by
committee members with BAKPA promotional items and renal disease educational information available.
There was opportunity to speak with the public and NHS staff about renal di5ea5e and the importance of
looking after ones kidneys. The literature was well received with some being taken for patients by staff
from the Outpatients department.
BAKPA continues to support those who participate in a team at the annual British Transplant Games. This
year the Games were held in Nottingham and for 2025, the planned venue is Oxford.
Details of the work we support are provided below under the heading Achievemerjts and Performance.
The trL¢Stees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. We think that our
work provides public benefit in many ways, because the work we do is open to all and makes a tangible
difference to people's lives.
We acknowledge the work undertaken and achieved which could not be done without our volunteers. All
BAKPA Trustees and Committee members are volunteers, and we are grateful for their contribution.

Achievements and Performance
Dialy5i5 Units
BAKPA ha5 been pleased to be able to support the five Dialysis Units under the medical care of
Southmead Hospital Renal Unit.
This year Cossham Dialysis Unit saw the installation of televisions for patients completed. This was fullv
funded by BAKPA, and we worked in partnership with the Southmead Hospital Charity, through whom
payments were made. Other units have asked us about installing televisions and we are awaiting
progress of these requests by Southmead hospital and the hospital charity.
Continuing our tradition at Christmastime we provided greetings cards, gift cards and chocolates as
seasonal gifts to all medical units under the care of the Southmead Renal Unit. The gift cards enable
Dialysis Unit staff to buy festive food and drinks for those undergoing dialysis and these Eifts have been
well received.
For dialysis patients we purchased kidney-shaped stress balls printed with BAKPA'S logo. These were
distributed to all the Dialysis Units. These promotional items enable patients to improve their fistula
access when dialysing.
We had a request from the manager at Weston-super-mare Dialysis unit who was keen to improve
patient wellbeing and grow fresh produce from the garden in the Summer for patients to enjoy. We were
pleased to be able to provide a Earden centre voucher to support this initiative to improve patient
welfare.
Ambleside Unit requested cushions to reduce the risk of pressure sores when patients sit for long periods
of time and we purchased these to help patients, health.
We continue to seek to provide and purchase, when requested, specialist hospital and recreational
equipment for the benefit of patients.
Properties
Hales House our property lotated close to Southmead Hospital enables patients and relatives to stay near
to the hospital when they are away from home. This has become more useful with the expansion of the
geographical area covered by Southmead Renal Department.
It has provided a very welcome resource for patients and their families who live outside the Bristol area
and who are being treated at the Southmead Hospital Renal Unit. The Hales House online booking system
h35 been functioning well and has simplified bookings for patients, their relatives and Southmead Hospital
Renal Unit staff.
This year we have much needed refurbishments made to the Hales House, including replacement of
garden fences and updating of the landscaping. The contractor kindly offered to regularly maintain the
garden voluntarily. We have a150 updated and maintained the interior of the property with minor repairs
to walls and the provision of new curtains, carpets and artworks. Most of the cost of these has been met
by the contractor who has been very generous in their support of BAKPA.
This facility is very much appreciated with many positive comments left in the visitors, book such as these
extracts..
'Hales house has been a lifesaver for us. Thank you so much for letting us use this wonderful home, we
will be forever grateful.

"It was like home from home. Thank you so muchl Amazing service to those in need and helps take the
pressure off hard times.
'1 am so happy we were able to stay at Hales House near the hospital. l am from the Netherlands, and it
was really nice to say here close to the hospital. It felt 'homey' and safe. Thank you so much for thisl"
"Thank you so much for providing this service. It has greatly reduced the stresses of travelling for
appointments"
"A huge thank you to everyone at BAKPA for supplying this wonderful house. It has provided us a private
space to have some peace and calm in our very chaotic world. Life has rsot been kind to our family of late,
so thank you from the bottom of my heart. Whatever life throws at us we can now look forward with
love and positivity."
"You have made a very stressful time easier with some place to relax after long days."
"to be able to stay in this house was amazing. It has a wonderful safe feeling."
McAllister House, our second property, purchased in July 2022, provides much needed holidays for
patients and their familie5. It is close to a dialysis unit and use of this will enable patients to continue this
treatment whilst on holiday.
Maintenance and improvements of this year included painting the Kitchen by BAKPA members, sealing of
the garden paving slabs and purchase of garden furniture to enhance the use of the propertv.
There has been positive feedback and appreciation from those who have used McAllister House which 15
encouraging.
Thls year we finalised the status of the property by transferring the title of land to the Official Custodian
for Charities in trust for the charity. Both properties are now registered with the Official Custodian for
Charities which provides a legal framework in the event of any change of trustees.
Transplant Games
The 2024 British Transplant Games took place in Nottingham in July with twenty-one competitors
attending, with five of these being new competitors.
The Britlsh Transplant Games 2024 was very successful for the team. They returned having won 23 Gold
medals, 8 Silver medals and 11 Bronze medals. Many new participants won medals, one of whom
achieved three goldsl
There was a change in management with the team led by new team manager Charlie, on the retirement
of Catharine after 14 years of service and who has moved away from the area. Catharine will continue to
SUPPOrt Charlie as he takes on the new role.
BAKPA were also able to SUPPOrt the team with the use of BAKPA'S gazebo and provision of new sports kit
for competitors.
Thirteen of the team of the team were selected for the World Transplant Games in 2025, which will be
taking place in Germany in August 2025.

Partnerships
We work in close relationship with Southmead Hospital Renal Department and their medical ènd nursing
Staff. In recent years we have worked more closely with the Southmead Hospital Charitv ISHCI, the
charitable department of the hospital, to help meet patient needs. This year they held a SHC Donors,
event which was attended by our Chair and who was pleased to hear their acknowledgement of BAKPAS
funding of Cossham Dialysis Unit patient television.
This year we have participated in the Kidney Disease Health Integration Team IHITI
Iwww.bristolhealthpartners.org.uk/health-integrationteams/kidney-diseasel, a team of clinical staff and
patients working together to improve patient outcomes and care pathways for patients with kidney
disease. Through this group we have been pursuing our goal of having a dedicated social worker
appointed for renal patients and BAKPA provided a statement in support of the application for this Post.
We have significant partnerships with other Renal organisations including the National Kidney Federation
INKFI who represent UK Kidney Patient Association5 IKPAS). We have representation with Trustees and
Committee members participating in NKF events and meetings. This year these included the NKF National
Conference, KPA South West Chairs, meeting and the NKF KPA Day. These events provide opportunities
to discuss and share with other KPA members on a range of relevant topics. BAKPA is also represented
each year in the annual NKF KPA'S promotional calendar. BAKPA members also participate in and
contribute to the South West Renal Network a collaboration of NHS organi5ations.
Following attendance at these partnership events, members and trustees report details of the events to
BAKPA committee meetings.
Social events and Fundraising
Coffee mornings were hosted by BAKPA at Weston-super-mare and at St Stephens Church, Southmead.
We were pleased the Ambleside Dialysis Unit manager was able to come to the Weston event. The
Southmead event was supported by a craft stall run by church members with all proceeds going to
BAKPA. Other crafts generated further interest raising funds after the event.
For the first time a stall was held at Stockwood market which was successful and which also provided a
useful platform to raise awareness of kidney health and discuss the work BAKPA carries out on behalf of
renal patients. We plan to repeat this event when the market is open during the summer months.
Website
We maintain a website lwww.bak
8.or
.ukl which contain5 news and information about BAKPA and
which is regularly sjpdated and available to all.
Newsletter
We provide a regular Newsletter for all members and this year again sent paper copies of the newsletter
in order to best suit our membership. The new51etter is also published online on the BAKPA website.
Membership
Membership numbers were imparted by the change to online only membership and mindful of this we
have this year sent membership forms by post.
We and are grateful for the help of those voluntarily working behind the screens to ensure the website,
newsletter and membership lists are up to date.

Review of Financial Activities and Affairs
BAKPA'S income in 2023 was just over £31000 which was more than last year with an increase in
donations including one very generous anonymous donation. Both properties Saw similar income this
year with Hales House expenditure increasing due to work on the garden and house maintenance.
We have again been grateful to have receive donations from many individuals and companies who have
contributed to our income. john Lewis PLC continLJe to support the ongoing work of BAKPA with
donations of goods including pillows and bedding. We were supported in our purchase of sportswear for
the Transplant Games team by Total Teamwear who matched funding for this. Other fundraisers have
kindly donated their time and effort in raising donations for us through charitable giving platforms with
social and fundraising events. We receive generous donations in memory of family members, many
anonymous donations and regular gifts through standing orders, for which we are grateful.
We were pleased to meet a request from Kidney Care UK to fund travel for two young adult renal patients
enabling them to attend the Young Adult Residential weekend. As this is an annual event there is scope
to continue this support.
Toward the end of the year, we researched and purchased new corporate kit for Committee members.
This enables BAKPA members to be identified as such when volunteering at fundraising or social events.
The charity holds a reserve of £30,000 as at the end of the financial year which enables us to meet anv
commitments or contingencies and hold funds in an investment bond.
At our present levels of income and regular commitments we have no concerns about the charl￿S ability
to continue as a going concern.
The trustees consider that under the Charities Art 2011, the income of the charity falls within the range
for which an independent examination of the charity'5 accounts is required, but an audit is not required.
Structure, Governance and Management
BAKPA is governed by a Constitution, version 14, amended 2016. It is an Unincorporated Association.
New Trustees may be appointed by the Trustees and members of the charity. Executive Off icers (Chair,
Vice-chair, Treasurer and Secretary) are elected at the Annual General Meeting and the Chair holds office
for a maximum of three years and may then stand for re-election at each subsequent Annual General
Meeting.
The Charity operates in the South West of England, serving all patients registered with 5outhmead
Hospital Renal Department and is comprised of Trustees and Management Committee members. All
Trustees and Committee members work for the Association on a voluntary basis and do not receive any
remuneration, payments or benefits from the charity other than legitimate trustee expenses and there
are no paid Staff.
BAKPA works on behalf of renal patients under the care of Southmead Hospital North Bristol NHS Trust
Renal Department and in partnership with the Southmead Hospital Charity110559001 through whom
some donations are disbursed.
