Devon Beekeepers Association. Registered Charity No 270675 Acting general secretary Judith Norman Email: gensec@devonbeekeepers.org.uk
General Secretary's Annual Report 2024 on behalf of the Executive Council
Executive Council Meetings : five meetings have been held over the course of 2024. In the absence of a general secretary, Alan Binge and Viv Thorn kept up with the essentials, and I became an acting secretary, primarily to take minutes in the first instance, and then expand my role under the helpful guidance of Alan Binge and Simon O’Sullivan as the Chair.
Education is coordinated by Kathy Lovegrove, who participates at a national level (in addition to coordinating our county education). This year, mentoring and the setting up of a learning platform to facilitate the running of courses have been important national themes. Kathy’s Zoom courses have been massively over subscribed, but fortunately the sessions are available for viewing on our website. Our County paid for 10 candidates to do a General Husbandry training course, in order to have a pool of suitably qualified people to conduct the Basic assessments. Two of these plan to take the General Husbandry assessment during 2025, and the others are aiming for 2026.
Asian Hornet: the Devon core group has met five times over the year, by Zoom. Whilst the AH incursion in SE England has continued, we were glad that there appear to have been no further nests in Devon. Core group members have been active in doing talks on AH for various branches, and on Zoom, and in recruiting verifiers (230 at the last count) across Devon to put out bait to confirm whether any “reports” received are actually AH or not. The Devon EC approved a budget of £5000 for a year in the first instance. The main expenses have been the purchase of bait to distribute amongst the
branches, (not for random monitoring but specifically for verifying, and in case of the need for nest tracking) and materials for publicity.
Devon County Show:
Despite the usual investment in time and effort, this year the footfall and takings were less than usual. Nonetheless it was a good opportunity to speak with hundreds of adults and children about beekeeping and the Asian hornet threat.
President’s Day: this is an opportunity for beekeepers across Devon to meet, and as usual it was a busy day with much information on offer and all the talks had good feedback.
“Beekeeping” - the Devon magazine: our editor Robert Blackmore has done an excellent job making this worth reading despite the difficulty in getting content. Mike Ticehurst (who has provided admin support with sending invoices, adding branch events diary dates, and sending out the digital copy) is standing down. We need someone to take over this work, and Mike has kindly offered to give detailed tuition to whoever takes it over.
DBKA website: this has many useful records and material such as the teaching videos. Paul Greening is happy to continue to run the website but has suggested that a more artistic member may be able to update the appearance and ease of use as a one off contribution.
The eR2 members data base continues to be an asset, facilitating communication with members, and providing maps of where members are based, which helps with swarm collecting and with delegating the checking of any reports of possible Asian hornet presence.
Branch activities: each EC meeting has an update of branch activities and the courses, open days and apiary work going on routinely are reassuring. Tiverton branch have even taken an observation hive into primary schools!
