## **ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st MARCH 2022.** 

The Trustees present their general and financial report for the year ending 31st March 2022. 

## **Background** 

**Newham North Islamic Association** hereafter known as NNIA was established in May' 1974 mainly to cater for religious, social and cultural needs of the growing Muslim community in the area. It started its activities by congregating in a house, for prayers and main religious events. However, the accommodation was too small for the large number of Muslims and subsequently moved into Durning Hall, Forest Gate, London E7. The elders of the local community embarked into fund raising and managed to buy the present site known as: 88 Green Street, E7 8JG, through donations from the local community. 

These premises were later developed into a large Mosque and Community Centre in phases since early 1990s. Later in continuation of the development of this Community Centre, 140 Whyteville Road, E7, was purchased which was designed to enable separate facilities for women's use and has been extremely successful. 

The current premises are being continually upgraded to maximise its use, increase facilities and amenities to reflect the changing needs. A number of improvements have been undertaken to improve accessibility, safety and security for the users. 

## **Governing Document** 

The Charity is governed by the constitution of Newham North Islamic Association. 

## **Induction and training of new Trustees** 

All trustees are given, in the view of the board, sufficient training as knowledge to understand the nature of the Charity so that they can fully comply with the Charity's current view of its progression. They are required to participate in an orientation day to ensure they are aware of both their legal and professional responsibilities under Charity and Company Law. 

## **Organisational Structure** 

The Charity has 13 elected Executive Committee Members plus two reserved ‘seats’ for women. The Executive Committee is responsible for the general running and management of the Charity and its objectives. The Trustees and Executive Committee Members give their time free of charge and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. Executive Members meet as a body, on monthly basis and are responsible for all decisions taken in relation to running the mosque, community facilities and activities by the charity. The Executive Committee has set-up a number of sub-committees for help, support, delegation and the transparency for the smooth running of the Charity while achieving its objectives. 

Mr. Mohammed Abdul Naeem Sheikh, continued to act as Chair, responsible for day to day business of the Mosque & Centre. 

## **Risk Management** 

The Trustees and the Executive Committee have a duty to identify and review the risk to which the Charity is exposed to and ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable measures against fraud and error. The Trustees and Executive Committee are satisfied that systems are working, and where necessary adequate arrangements are in hand, to manage the risks that have been identified. In particular, insurance cover is available and finances of the mosque are kept under view. Appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, supported by regular training and review of the policies, are made for all those who work with children or other vulnerable groups within the Mosque or community Centre.

## **Objectives, Aims and Activities** 

The objectives of the Charity are set in its constitution and summarised as follows: 

To provide place of worship, bring about harmony amongst community and enhance the Islamic Faith for the benefit of the local public through regular prayer gatherings, cultural, religious, education and community activities. The Centre opens seven days a week for prayers, as well as evening and weekend Madrassah and is mainly used by the local community. 

The Centre also fulfils a function in catering for non-religious and inter-faith activities, such as hold meetings of various Faith Leaders known as” Faithful Friends”, Local School children visits for R.E. lessons, Crime Prevention, Research, Community Cohesion, Law & Order issues. Women groups, Muslimah and Sister Circle, continuously use ladies section of the premises for various activities including prayers, girl’s classes, teachings of Islam, community meetings and elderly women gatherings. “VisitMyMosque”and visits to worship places. The trust continues to participate in relief of war torn areas for rehabilitation and famine struck areas by raising funds to help those who suffer in natural disasters in different parts of the world. 

## **Statement of Trustees' responsibilities** 

The Trustees are responsible to oversee the Executive Committee for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the final position of the Charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) regulation 2008. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The activities of the trust continued to be the same and there was no significant change during the year. 

The Trustees of the Charity as at 31[st] March 2022 were as follows: Mr. Abdul Karim Gaya Mr. Shahid Hussain. Mr. M. S. Modi. Mr. Mohammed Iqbal Fiaz

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF NEWHAM NORTH ISLAMIC ASSOCIATION ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] MARCH 2022** 

We report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31[st] March 2022, which are set out on pages 5 and 6. 

## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustees & Examiners:** 

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. 

It is our responsibility to: 

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; 

- Follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act: and 

- State whether particular matters have come to our attention. 

## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report** 

Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. 

It also includes consideration of the unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. 

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. 

## **Independent Examiner's Statement** 

In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention: 

- (1) Which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: 

   - To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and 

   - To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; 

## **OR** 

- (2) To which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
