Section D Achievements and performance

Construction work on the new Rye Harbour Discovery Centre, which Summary of the main began in March 2019, continued throughout the year and the building achievements of the charity was essentially complete by the year-end. However ongoing Covid-19 during the year related restrictions prevented its opening to the public until May 2021. Previously-unforeseen expenditure on a new services trench increased the project cost significantly during the year and in the light of this The Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve made a further contribution towards the project of £100,000 during the year. Whilst the Discovery Centre is a Sussex Wildlife Trust project in the first instance, the Friends have been major donors and remain closely involved in the development and the future operation of the Centre. The Friends made a contribution of £31,000 towards the salaries of nature reserve staff in line with previous years, and contributed a further £11,590 to fund the replacement of one of the Reserve’s vehicles. Due to Covid-19 lockdown measures and other related restrictions, no visitor facilities were provided on the Reserve during the year. As a result The Friends were in receipt of no income from retail activities during the year. This has however had no material effect on the Charity’s income, its cash reserves or its ability to continue to fulfil its objectives.
