Group Scout Leader’s update
What a busy year it has been for our Group. In June we held a group camp at Bushy Wood, the first �me our new Squirrels joined the other sec�ons. It was a huge success, however, it stretched the leadership team to the limit so next �me I'll be asking parents to lend a hand too but huge thanks to Emmy & Phillipa for keeping us fed and watered. We also opened up our third new sec�on in 18 months following on from the Wednesday Scout troop earlier last year, we now have a second Beaver colony which meets on a - Thursday from 5 6pm. We also recently came back from Prague, our first ever interna�onal trip with 18 Scouts, two Young Leaders and ten Leaders, a report of this trip is later on in this Annual Report.
Both Darren and Kim were presented with their five years’ service awards and Liz her 20 years’ service award, huge congratula�ons and thanks to you all for your hard work.
The future of the Group looks in great shape with a hugely dedicated group of leaders and support from the Board of Trustees and some parents. Work to fully refurbish the toilets and showers upstairs along with a new disabled toilet and redecora�on of the hallway downstairs have been completed, the next project is to refit the aging kitchen upstairs.
Our recently purchased climbing wall is now in ac�on with some of the - leaders successfully comple�ng a two day training weekend and being signed off with their climbing permits. The Group was also kindly invited to lay crosses on the war graves at the cemetery, it was a great turn out and made both parents and leaders proud as our young people remembered the war heroes who fought for us today.
Opening three new sec�ons in the past 18 months has allowed us to reduce our wai�ng lists drama�cally. Our Group Development Plan is working well, copies are available on request. Our next aim is to recruit a new Leader for each sec�on and two or three for our larger Scout sec�ons to support camps and weekend events. We also purchased a minibus last year that has been well used by our Scouts and other groups in the district and we have just purchased a second one to give us more flexibility ge�ng our members to and from events and camps.
The hall is available to hire in holidays and weekends. The current rate is £80 half day (4hrs) or £160 (8hrs) whole day, this allows use of all the facili�es at the hall. A discounted rate is available to members of the Group and in the past it has been hired for par�es, yoga, dance and corporate training. We also now have a bouncy castle for hire at the cost of £80. Also for an addi�onal cost, ac�vity par�es for archery, air rifles, axe throwing and the climbing wall are available, please ask me for further details if interested.
If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please speak to a Leader. Any amount of �me you are able to give will be precious to us, whether that’s help cooking the BBQ or organising fundraising events or helping with maintenance of the HQ or doing some weeding in the copse. Take a look at our vacancy board to see what help is needed.
Finally without your support we wouldn't be the Group we are today so I want to thank you all personally for your support. Also a huge thank you to my amazing team of Leaders who make the Group so special and con�nue to offer the young members life skills and memories they will treasure for ever.
Graeme
We are now into our second year with Squirrels and we are full with a wai�ng list which includes children as young as four months old!
Our Squirrels have done so well gaining their badges and we have had a total of six children achieve their Chief Acorn Award (the highest award they can achieve), with nine very close to comple�ng all the requirements. By the �me you read this, we expect them to have achieved this.
We currently have four Leaders, two parent helpers and two Young Leaders. We are currently looking for one more Leader. We are at full capacity with 20 Squirrels. In the last year, we have presented 293 badges.
In the summer, five Squirrels had their first sleepover during the group camp at Bushy Wood and nine children a�ended during the day where they enjoyed a
hike in the woods, so� axe throwing, so� archery, low ropes, water rockets, tent building and a camp fire with singing.
In the autumn term Squirrels were very busy; they had a visit to the Fire Sta�on where they got to try on uniform and spray the hose and then the Police visited us and the Squirrels had lots of fun pressing the siren bu�on. The Squirrels made guys from their old clothes and burnt them
In the spring term the Squirrels celebrated na�onal popcorn day by making their own popcorn and other popcorn related ac�vi�es. Of course we couldn’t forget pancake day when the Squirrels made their own pancakes with lots of yummy toppings.
The Squirrels went on a very exci�ng tour of Asda supermarket where Wendy showed them behind the scenes of the warehouse, told them exci�ng facts about fruit and vegetables and it ended with a taster of pomegranate and strawberries. The term ended with a hike through St Helens Wood and the Squirrels were taught the basics of using a compass.
We have lots of exci�ng sessions planned in our programme for the current summer term including planning a sleepover.
Kyrsty & Leah
We con�nue to run a fun, busy programme throughout the year, aiming to make the most of the outdoors when possible.
Summer term 2024 included an introduc�on to morris dancing with Keith Leech OBE (founder and organiser of Has�ngs Tradi�onal Jack-in-theGreen) and a May Day hike to see Grace crowned as the May Queen.
The Beaver Olympics were just as compe��ve as the real games in Paris. - Beavers took part in fire ligh�ng, games in the copse, naviga�on and map-reading ac�vi�es. The Beavers enjoyed the group camp, sleeping in tents for one night at Bushy Wood, alongside the Squirrels, Cubs and Scouts.
We also learned about railway safety and went for a ride by train to Ba�le and back with Andy Pope, Senior Community Rail Line Officer for the 1066 area. We finished the summer term with a hike in Has�ngs Country Park.
The themes of our programme in the autumn term were Global Issues, Community Impact and the Earth Tribe badges.

A fes�ve treat was a trip to the De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill to see the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk starring Young Leader Josh in the lead role!
As a Christmas treat for parents and carers, Beavers sang songs and created a cafe, we decorated a tree for the Christmas tree fes�val in St Clements Church in the Old Town.
We began 2025 with our old favourite: train night, always popular and combined with a log chew to share the Beavers’ ideas.
February saw the opening of our second Beaver colony, with the original colony (now known as Jelly Roll) mee�ng on Wednesdays and the new Rawhide colony mee�ng on Thursdays.

Meanwhile for the Jelly Roll colony, spring was a term of fes�vity and interna�onal events – including celebra�ons for Burns Night (tossing the - caber) and Chinese New Year (snake themed ac�vi�es). Other occasions were Founder's Day and Pancake Day. Beavers created gi�s and cards for Mothers’ Day, took part in an Easter egg hunt and campfire.
Skills prac�ce included pitching and striking a tent and learning to traverse the new climbing wall as Cally and Kim have trained as instructors.
Three Beavers have achieved their Chief Scout Bronze Award this year and 292 badges were awarded over the year in total.
We are looking forward to collabora�on between the two colonies, including planning for a summer sleepover together.

The Cubs learnt about global warming and how energy is used at home. Following on from this the Cubs did the aqua box challenge where they had £3 each to make a water filter and discussed where clean water comes from and how lucky we are compared to some other countries. We visited the St Mary Star of the Sea Church in the Old Town where the Cubs were able to light candles in memory of lost loved ones and had a tour of the church along with singing some hymns.

We concluded the term up to Easter by con�nuing the Environmental badge, bringing in recycling and learning how to recycle, where it goes and what can’t be recycled. The Cubs made robots out of recycling. Then there were evenings making pancakes, morris dancing and traversing the new climbing wall.
This year we handed out 510 badges to Cubs, huge well done for all your achievements.
The next year looks to be a busy one with a district camp planned along with a fun day and many more events in the pipeline.
Emma & Mar�n
To close the summer term we hiked to Buckhurst Farm where we held a weekend survival skills camp where the Scouts had to make their own shelters, cook on open fires and live amongst the frogs (despite being told not to make a shelter at the bo�om of a hill). We had two teams enter the annual Goldbitz challenge at Broadstone Warren where one Scout decided to cook a full English breakfast on a trangia! We also went to the Old Town and took part in a chip shop survey challenge, the winner this year was The Mermaid who gave us free chips!! We also did our first trip to the East Sussex Gliding Club in Ringmer where the Scouts and some parents had a chance to try gliding. Unfortunately the second trip was cancelled due to bad weather but we have rebooked to go again this year.
Summer camp was held at Thorrington, in Essex. We had 23 Scouts and six Explorers a�end. They con�nued the usual camp plan of cooking dinners on open fires and they even tried some new recipes along with the old favourites of beef olives and cider sausages. Their ac�vi�es saw them go to the Aqua Park, swimming pool and Colchester Zoo. Congratula�ons to the winning patrol at camp, the Peewits. The 2025 summer camp will be held at — Hallowtree nr Norfolk from 24th July 2nd August.
A�er the summer holidays we began with a bake off, making cupcakes, muffins and cookies. We also worked on the Chef badge where the Scouts had £10 to cook a meal for their patrol. We then did a sleepover in the Ramsgate Tunnels and learnt about their history and uses during the Second World War, including a tour of the miles of tunnels. We slept in bunk beds in the chalk tunnel where many families gained shelter from
the onslaught above during the war. We finished the term carving pumpkins and playing games before we took 25 scouts to our first spooky camp held at Thri�wood in Essex.
A�er half term we laid crosses on the war graves at the cemetery and joined the 18th Has�ngs Scouts at the Service of Remembrance at Fairlight Church.
We went to the YMCA for an a�ernoon of roller ska�ng and also visited the Herstmonceux Observatory and Science Centre with the Cubs, we saw Saturn and its rings through a telescope and they also enjoyed exploring the many exhibits there. We concluded the term with our second sleepover in
as many months at Flip Out Ashford where the Scouts had private use of the trampoline park followed by dinner and a film before bed. The final weeks of term were based around Christmas cra�s, making cards and decora�ons for the Crea�ve badge. We held our annual Christmas
most badges earned in 2023 with a whooping 14 badges, huge well done.
A�er Christmas we made prepara�ons for our second winter camp, Fire & Ice at Tolmers in Her�orshire, following the huge success of the previous year. The weather was kind to us, not too cold during the day and just woolly hats and gloves needed at night. Over the weekend the Scouts took part in lots of fun ac�vi�es. For some it was their first Scout camp but they had an amazing �me and this will become an annual event on our calendar.
At the following mee�ngs we had an evening on problem solving where the Scouts had to do tasks based on memory and skill as well as mental and lateral thinking with games such as mind benders. We began plans for this year’s expedi�on challenge, teaching the Scouts how to pack their bags correctly, what to bring and planning menus and the cooking apparatus that is available to them for their hikes.
A�er the February break we had an evening on knots and lashings, made clay models and did some morris dancing in prepara�on for the May Day celebra�ons. We also held a weekend training camp for our Patrol and Assistant Patrol Leaders where they learnt about what it takes to lead a group of Scouts, how to deal with challenging behaviour and also how to do a risk assessment and plan a balanced programme.
This year we awarded 247 Ac�vity badges and 3 Chief Scout Gold Awards. This comprises of nine challenge badges; Adventure, Crea�ve, Expedi�on, Outdoors, Personal, Skills, Team Leader, Teamwork and the World Challenge. Very well done to those for all your hard work and who are now due to move up to Explorers.

It doesn’t need to be a regular weekly commitment, below are details of some of the roles we’d love to fill. If you’d be interested in joining us, please speak to one of the Leaders.
We’d also love to hear from anyone who might be able to run a badge course, help to run a camp or volunteer to help at one of our sec�ons. There really isn’t a lot of red tape so if you think you could help us in any way, please speak to one of the Leaders.
Prague 2025
Our inaugural interna�onal trip with the Scouts was an adventure. With months of fundraising running quiz nights, cake sales, bag packs and sponsored events we made it! On 10[th] April we took 18 Scouts, two Young Leaders, nine Leaders and our Treasurer to Prague in the Czech Republic. It was a very early start, we met at the school at 1am to drive up to Heathrow. We dropped the Scouts and - some Leaders at the airport then drove to the off site parking to find that they no longer take vans or minibuses so there was an excess charged to allow us to park there. We boarded the bus and met back with the Scouts at the airport. Our flight was at 6.15am and upon landing we bundled into wai�ng minivans which took us from the airport to our hotel, the Don Giovanni.
for some brunch and a much need energy boost. We then went to a local park to meet a group of Prague Scouts. We played some games and I explained what badges we have in the UK and how the Scouts have to work towards nine challenge awards to earn their
Chief Scout Gold Award. A�er this we went to a burger restaurant for dinner before heading back to the hotel.
Friday we had breakfast at the hotel then ventured out to Jungle Park, Europe’s largest indoor climbing park, where we had a three hour session of rock climbing and bouldering. A�er lunch there we headed back into Prague and took the Scouts to the History of Prague 5D experience so they could learn a bit about the country over the last 800 years. Once we had done this we went to the food court where the Scouts chose from many different cuisines for their dinner. Before we headed back to the hotel we stopped off at the Museum of Illusions which was a great laugh for all.
Saturday we headed into Prague for a tour including the Charles Bridge and we had an underground tour of the Town Hall before climbing the historic clock tower for amazing views of the city. We stopped in the Easter market to have hot dogs, chips on a s�ck and cake with ice

Sunday we went to Prague Zoo, an amazing zoo which was extremely good value for money. The sun was shining and we had another great experience. A�er lunch we met another Scout Group, the 1st Prague Bri�sh Overseas
Scouts. They work on the same scou�ng badges we do and speak English, meaning it was easier to communicate. We played games, sung camp songs and exchanged scarves and badges. We had dinner at the food court, then went back to the hotel for an early night as Saturday’s ac�vi�es were beginning to take their toll.
Monday was our last full day and we headed up the Petřín Tower, one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. The view from the top overlooks the whole city and beyond. We walked through the park and towards the castle for a guided tour of the grounds and St Vi�cus Cathedral, which was started in 1344 and not completed un�l 1929. A�er the tour we had dinner before our last excursion, a ghost walk. This allowed the Scouts to learn even more about the history of the city and also to see it at night, giving a completely different perspec�ve of the city. We then headed back to the hotel to do some packing before bed.
Tuesday was our last day, we checked out of the hotel and headed back into Prague for the final �me. The Scouts shopped un�l all their money had gone, then we went to the famous Hard Rock Cafe for lunch before going back to the hotel to collect our luggage.
Three of the four mini vans arrived to pick us up, unfortunately the fourth one didn’t arrive for a further 45 minutes. The traffic was terrible and we were on tenterhooks, with three quarters of the Group at the airport and the others s�ll missing somewhere in the traffic. The gate was about to close and it looked as if some would have to spend another night in Prague. Luckily, I managed to remotely check in the others and so all they had to do
was grab their boarding cards and leg it through the airport with minutes to spare. A bumpy flight home followed by a quiet drive back to the hall with weary Scouts in tow, we arrived back at 10.30pm to be greeted by open arms from parents and stories their children have told them for days and memories made for a life�me.
This was an experience for us all, the Scouts had an amazing �me and were extremely well behaved throughout the trip. The Leaders realised that having 30 people means things take three �mes longer than a group of 6! Lessons learnt and memories made for all.
I would like to thank the Scouts for represen�ng the Group, District and UK in true scou�ng fashion, along with the team of Leaders for giving up their �me to make this trip a huge success. Finally, thanks to parents for their help with fundraising. The trip made a small surplus of £25.25, full accounts available upon request. Having taken a well earned rest, we are planning to do a trip to a different country in three years’ �me. Registra�on will open in early 2027 with the trip taking place some �me around April-June 2028.
