## **Group Scout Leader’s update** 

This year our group celebrates its 90th Anniversary. Behind the scenes, I have been busy recrui�ng new parents to our Board of Trustees, which is now looking  healthier and is crucial to hear the thoughts and views of parents on the day‐to‐day running of the group as a whole. I am pleased to say we currently have 22 

uniformed leaders, seven Sec�on Assistants and seven Young Leaders among our group. At present, the group has approximately 133 young members and we opened up a second Cub pack in Easter 2022 and a new Squirrel drey for ages 4—6 years in January. In April, we had a great turnout of the group for our St George’s Day parade. 




The hall is available to hire in holidays and weekends. The current rate is £60 half day or £120 whole day, this allows use of all the facili�es at the hall. A discounted rate is available to all members of the group and it can be hired for par�es, yoga, dance or corporate training events. We also now have a bouncy castle for hire at the cost of £70. Ac�vity par�es for archery, air rifles and axe throwing are also available, please ask me for further details if interested. 



I’m pleased to say that two of our leaders, Kim and Darren Hall, both received their five year service awards and recently completed their Wood badge. Well done for all your hard work. In June we held a celebra�on party for the late Queen’s Jubilee. We had face pain�ng, raffle, tombola, BBQ and scou�ng skills such as archery, �e dyeing and making bird feeders. Many groups from the district a�ended along with Guides and Brownies. A thoroughly fun day had by all. 









In October we held a leader training weekend where we brushed up on exis�ng skills and learnt new ones including map reading, knots, and lashings, compass work, knife, axe and saw training and tent pitching. We plan to hold another one later this year. 

As we move further into 2023/4 the future of the group looks in great shape with a hugely dedicated group of leaders and support from the Board of Trustees. 

We have a large wai�ng list of members wishing to join us but with our leaders stretched to full capacity, more help is needed.  If you would like to volunteer your �me, please speak to a leader. Any �me you are able to give will be precious to us, perhaps help cooking a BBQ or organising fundraising events, perhaps just helping with maintenance of HQ. Finally without your support we wouldn't be the group we are today, so I want to thank you all personally.

So with the huge success of the Scout Associa�on’s pilot scheme for ages 4—6 years, our group opened the first drey in the District. With the lead of Jo, Leah, Kyrsty and with the support from Cain and myself, we started in January 2023 and currently have 19 members with more due to follow within the next few months. 




Our ac�vi�es have included celebra�ng Chinese New Year making lanterns and Chinese dragon masks and ea�ng fortune cookies, a visit from the author Ed Boxall who did the Story Time badge, making pancakes and a visit from the Mayor who invested our first ever 12 Squirrels. We also made blanket forts and had a visit from an ambulance. 


Next term we plan to visit the fire sta�on, do some yoga and plant some vegetables. Then to round term off before summer, we plan to take a visit to the beach or woods and make a trip to the local supermarket to buy some food for the local foodbanks and learn where fruit and veg come from.

The Beaver sec�on remains strong, with good numbers of Beavers, adult and young leaders and parent helpers. We run a youth‐led programme aiming to cover the six Challenge Awards over the two years a child can be in Beavers. We have a “log‐chew" each term to share ideas and opinions about ac�vi�es for fun and friends in the colony. 

Summer term 2022 was a busy happy �me, ge�ng back to normal mee�ngs a�er Covid. We had good numbers a�ending the St George’s Day church parade, group celebra�ons for the Queen’s Jubilee and our AGM. The Beavers created a beau�ful display for the Old Town Parish Flower Fes�val, with some very smart guardsmen and pots of growing seeds. 

We started the Autumn at County Camp at Bushy Wood, a first night under canvas for many of the Beavers. They had a wonderful �me taking part in adventurous and outdoor ac�vi�es with Beaver friends from across East Sussex. One of the highlights of the camp was joining in a huge campfire, we learned some joyful new songs including the “Beaver call”! 


More experiences in the Autumn included our group Fun Day, a family hike in Has�ngs Country Park, a visit to the bell tower of All 



Saints Church in the Old Town and a trip to the White Rock Theatre for the Gang Show, where we cheered on two of our Beavers who were performing. 


The Beavers created woolly decora�ons for a special tree in St Clement’s Church Christmas Tree Fes�val and visited Southdowns Nursing Home to entertain the residents with carols. We held a Christmas sleepover in the hall, with cra�s, songs and outdoor skills in the copse. 

2023 began with a great team‐building favourite – Trains Night, as requested by the Beavers. We had fun inside and out, including games in the copse, a visit to the Fire Sta�on, an indoor campfire and celebra�ons for Chinese New Year and Founder’s Day. 


Over the year we have invested 18 new Beaver Scouts and awarded 280 badges including 11 Chief Scout’s Bronze, our best year so far. Almost all 24th Has�ngs Beavers progress to Cubs, choosing between the Thursday or Friday packs.  We are looking forward to welcoming the first Squirrels who move up to Beavers.

We started off the term with an evening of tent pitching, followed by a li�er pick around the school grounds for the Environmental badge. The Cubs had a visit from Jaws and Claws, began the Cyclist badge and had an evening of sports day events run by our young leaders. A�er half term we did the Local Knowledge badge with a quiz around the Old Town and a visit to Bexhill Museum. For the AGM last year, the Cubs brought in their collec�ons of various things to show and finished off term with a knots and lashings night and a water fight. 







A�er summer we started off with sea safety and had a visit from the lifeguards where they taught the Cubs about water safety. We also made key hooks for their DIY badge and had a visit from the local police. We did some map reading as part of their Navigator badge and collected food for the local food bank, Dom's Food Mission. 

District held a Sixer and Seconder camp for our older cubs where they were set several challenges from the DC. These included fire ligh�ng, shelter making, pioneering and cooking, along with some fun ac�vi�es such as archery and rifles. One of our Cubs won Best Cub of the Camp.

A�er the October half term we had a bonfire with smores, we made a poppy wreath for 


Remembrance Day and went to watch Akela and other group members in the Gang Show at the White Rock Theatre. We also had a sleepover at Clip and Climb in Tonbridge. Towards Christmas we visited a local care home where the Cubs made Christmas cards with the residents and sang a few carols. They also had a district Christmas party that was brought to an abrupt halt by the snow but a bit of the white stuff didn’t dampen their spirits. 



A�er Christmas we made our own fortune cookies and Chinese lanterns for celebra�on of the Chinese New Year. The Cubs designed their own currency and learnt about foreign money. They were given chocolate coins to save and if not eaten would be rewarded with more! We did some first aid with Joe, an Explorer leader, and revisited knots with a visit from Skip from the SAS (Scout Ac�ve Support). 



We finished the term with a trip to the local Mosque where the Cubs learnt about another religion as part of their World Faith badge and ended the term with two weeks of science experiments making lava lamps, slime and stress balls. 

This year we awarded 980 Ac�vity badges and 14 Chief Scout’s Silver Awards from both Thursday and Friday packs. Huge congratula�ons to you all. Following the death of our previous GSL, Roger, we have a memorial trophy for each sec�on for a member who has exceeded expecta�on of the leaders. For the Cubs we have chosen Talan Tembe who collected unwanted items and gi�s and gave them to children and families who couldn't afford Christmas presents. He was inspired to do this following the visit by Dom’s Food Mission. A very courageous thing to do by an 9yr old!

We began the summer term by making some bird and bat boxes for the copse and did a li�er pick around the school grounds for the Global Issues and Conserva�on Badges. We also had some wide games in St Helen’s Wood and prac�sed some tent pitching as we hadn't had a summer camp for two years. During half term, a group of five Scouts successfully completed their expedi�on challenge hike, walking from Brede back to HQ via Wes�ield. 

A�er half term we did the Athle�cs badge on the field, played crazy golf with the usual chips a�erwards and also did some knot work and knife, axe and saw training in prepara�on for summer camp. 

For this year’s summer camp we went to Guernsey and camped at Rue Mainguy. We went over by ferry, staying for 12 days and were joined by 21 Scouts, 18 Explorers and seven leaders. The weather was beau�ful, too hot at �mes, but everyone had an amazing �me. 


We went coasteering and sea kayaking and did crate stacking, archery and climbing. We also managed a hike this year which was pleasant. 






The food, as always, was top quality, including camp favourites cider sausages and beef olives. For the first �me on a 24th Has�ngs camp since 1964, we had roast chicken, potatoes and veg. This year I plan to also get the Yorkshire puddings! 

The camp was enjoyed by all and we look forward to going again in four years’ �me. The trip back was a bit of 

an ordeal, the ferry delayed then a four hour coach drive back, arriv‐ ing at the school at 3am to find we had been locked out so had to call the caretaker to let us in. 

A�er the summer holidays we began with mini pioneering and visited the Mosque for part of our World Faith badge. The Scouts brought in their bicycles for much needed maintenance for the first part of their Cyclist badge. A�er half term the Scouts wanted to make shows and sketches for our Christmas party so we did this over three weeks. We went to see the Gang Show and had a sleepover at Clip and Climb in Tonbridge, which they all enjoyed. 









As we moved into December we spent an evening making Christmas gi�s, went to the Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne for the Wave Rave and had our Scout Christmas party where the Scouts performed the shows and sketches they had been planning. I also presented Isaac with the shield for the most badges earned in 2022 with a whooping 17 badges, a huge well done. 

A�er Christmas we did the Interna�onal badge trying foods from different countries and 


playing new games. We also learnt some Spanish and ate tapas. The Scouts wanted to do their Fundraiser badge so planned a cake sale and car wash which should be happening this term. We celebrated Founder’s Day, teaching the Scouts about World Scou�ng and its history. We wrapped up the term with an evening making cardboard box pizza ovens, an evening making survival blankets for the #crisppacketchallenge which were to be sent off to Turkey for those who are homeless following the earthquake, and finished off with a night hike and sleepover at the hall.

We began the term with an evening of tent pitching followed by trading post. Other evenings included crazy golf followed by chips, orienteering, backwoods cooking and an Old Town quiz. 

During the summer, 14 Explorers joined the Scouts on the summer camp to Guernsey, a great �me was had by them all. 

A�er summer we went sea kayaking with HACC at Bulverhythe, held a bake off night followed by an evening making costumes from recycling, a game show night and the £5 meal challenge. 




A�er half term we worked on some first aid, made home‐made takeaway favourites and held an evening on equality. We also learnt about Korea as three members of the unit are a�ending the World Scout Jamboree there this summer for three weeks. 




We also were invited to a�end the laying of the poppies at the war graves at the cemetery, a great honour to remember those who served and fought for our country. We finished off the term with a Christmas party of laser tag and bowling. 




A�er Christmas. we welcomed Lisa as a new leader to the team. We had an evening of giant board games including Jenga, Kerplunk and Scrabble and worked with this year’s Duke of Edinburgh teams to plan their prac�ce hikes. We followed up on the equality evening from before Christmas with a Paralympics event and carried out the annual chip shop survey and an orienteering Easter Egg hunt. 

We currently have 28 members in the unit and recently had a joint sleepover with Phoenix Explorers at Flip Out Trampoline Park in Ashford. Despite it being harder for Explorers to achieve ac�vity badges, I am s�ll pleased to say we awarded 110 ac�vity badges and 11 Chief Scout’s Pla�num and One Chief Scout’s Diamond award this past year.

## **ADULTS** 

## **Would you like to get more involved in the life of the Scout Group?** 

You don't need to be able to offer a regular weekly commitment; there are lots of ways you can help: 

 You might be able to run a badge course for us in a par�cular subject. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers all like to gain badges and there are an enormous number to choose from. 

 You might like to help us run a camp. There are many different camps throughout the year for the various age groups. 

 You may be able to assist driving a minibus or van to take children and kit to camp. 

-  Perhaps you could raise funds for us by organising a sponsored event or selling from a fundraising catalogue. 

 Maybe you could help keep the HQ building in good condi�on, or help with the maintenance of the copse? Mowing the grass or cu�ng down the brambles? 

-  You could become a Trustee of the Group. 

 It would be really good for the parents and other adults to have get‐togethers or arrange ou�ngs or par�es. 

_There really isn't a lot of red tape. Depending on the role you volunteer for, you would probably need to have a DBS check and if working with the youngsters directly, you would do a small amount of training/induc�on to support you in your work._
