Kent and has nine trustees who meet at least three times a year to discuss the past and look to the future in order to manage the charity. New trustees are chosen from those with an Snterest in the observatory and ol the recording of birds in thè 8rè8. Generally new tiustees will be known by at least some of th8 current tTU$tees and are required to be Friends of the Observatory. The objectives of the charity remain the same. They are to record details ot the bird and other wildlif8 of the area includingthe migration of all wildlife. Daily records were kept for birds, m8mm81s and some invertebrate groups. particularly L8pidoptera, Odon8ta, Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Hymenoptera. The plant list Was also maintained. Bird ringing was carried out whenever the opportunity arose but only 510 birds of 40 specles were ringed. This, sadly, reflects the continuing decline in numbers of migrant passerines over the past few years and the increasing number of days whon the weather is either too wet or too windy for mist-nettSng. Nocturnal rnigration of birds (Nocmigl was also studied uslng an Audiornoth device. Th8 Motus Tower. installed in 2019. had a number of interesting'hits" from small migrant blrds this year including Skylark, Blackcap and Yellow-browed Warbler plus Nathusius, Plpplstrelle, a small, migratory bat species. The Motus system is an international, collaborative research network using co-ordinaied. automated radlo telemotry to facilitate research and education on the ecology and conservation of migratory animals. The bènefit to all of seeing the wildlite in the are8 is not only educatlon81 but good for our mental well-being. The trustees and warden do all ihey can to liaise well with those using the area, residents and visitors alike. Accommodation at the Observatory was occupied for approximately 130 visitorlnights, a low figure but, again reflective of changinB time5 but, thi5 time, in the behaviour of birders themselvesl Full details of the finances are included in the annual report but we received income of £41,700 which included £32,300 of income from investments and expended £40,6W leaving a surplus of £1,100 before the movement in value of investments. The Balance Sheet total funds had risen to £1.196m primarily as a result of the increase in the value of our investments.
