OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Oblectlves and alms The objectives of the Charty are lo.. Record the physical remains of economic and industrial activty, especialty since 1750, in the counties of East and West Sussex, Promote the preServat)n and restoration of industrial buiktings and plant of historical 01 tochnical importance, Study and preserve dccumentary and other types of records to the industrial history of East and Wesl Sussex. Publish the resuks of such recording and study. Significant activities The man activities of the Soaety are lo.. Publish our Annual Journal 'Sussex Industrial Historl which primarily consists of original research and is dislTibuted members. both East and West Sussex Record Office5, principal public libraries and other interested parties. Publish eight quartety newsletters, four relating to industrial archaeobgy and four encompassing wndMill$ and watermills Organise talks and visits principally for members bul which are advertised on our Website .sussexias.co.uk for any members of the public who may wish to attend. Represent SIAS on the Brighton and chheSter Conservation Advisory Groups Making repsetIOnS on planning applications affecting siles of historical industrial interest and campaigning for stslulory li8tings of histOTIC 1ndustrial buildings and structures. Our Mills Group had a successful year with meetings at Sussex Windmills and a tour of windmills and walermills. Followng a substantial legacy from the estate of a founder member, il was decided that some of this money should be made available in the form of grants lo support industrial heritage and archaeology projects in, or related lo, Sussex. This is in line wrth one of four key objeclNes lisled in the SIAS Conslilution - 'to promote the preservation and restoration of industrial buildings and plant of historical or technical importance.. THE SUSSEX INDUSTRIAL ARCHAELOGY SOCIETY REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30Tr1 SEPTEMBER 2025 ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activitie5 Organisation and revwal of an annual conference known as SERIAC South E85t Region Industrial Archaeology Conference. Thi8 had been in abeyance since 2019. This was hosted al Chichester by SIAS which was responsible for sourcing speakers from participating IA SoCtieS from London, Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire and Sussex. Allendance was over 100 and raised a small profil which was passed on lo the next society lo host the event. Many members volunteered lo help with the event's organisalion and necessary duties on the day. The Society initiated the idea of commemorating the balloon ascents of the Wright brothers in Sl Ann's Well Gardens. Hove by the erection of a Blue Plaque at the Garden's entrance. Brothers Oswald and Euslace Short had a balloon factory in Hov& and made several ascent5 in coal gas filled balloons in the earty twentieth century before founding Short Brothers Aircraft Co and manufacturing inter alia Sunderland flying boats and Slirling bombers. SIAS negotiated with Brighton and Hove City Council and funded the cost ol the Plaque which was Unvei by the Lady Mayor of Brhton at 8 Ctjnmunty event held in the Gardens. Eight quarterly newsletters were pr¢)duced, four rdaling lo industrial archaeology and four encompassing wind and water mills. Our award winning journal Sussex Industrial History No 55 was produced to ils usual high standard The winter lectures were well attend9d wth three presentations on the Brighton Locomotive Works, Lewes Industrial History and Newhaven Port and Town. Vists were made in May lo the railway Tunnel House at claOn and Jill Windmill. June saw another of our walks in Brighton's North Laine and Old Town areas led by one of our members who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of The Citvs buiwings and their history. In July a visit was made lo the Tangmere Aviation Museum with a special guided tour. Our 2025 representations on planning applications for Lewes Bus Station and Singklon lclosedl Railway Station and our attempts lo save the Lewe5 Phoenix Ironworks travelling crane. FINANCIAL REVIEW Flnanclal posltlon The funding of the Society's activrties wmes from memberfs annual subscriptions lil had a membership of 280 al year endl and a few historic 0¢les. This year however we have received a subslanlial legacy of £403,793.32 from a founder member and long time edfcor of our journal. This wll be used lo support and improve the SoCs activities and promdg grants to 'lo promote the preservation and restoration ol industrial buildings and plant of historical or technical importan¢e in both East and Wesl Sussex.. which rt is hoped will also help lo raise the profile.
