2023 saw Zurich Community Trust celebrale ils 501h anniversary. It was ￿ 31 December 1973 that
Hambro Life Charitable Trust. what is now known as Zurich Community Trust. was incepted - the idea
of Lord Jog1 Joffe. a remarkable man who dedicated hts life to the cause of justice and helping others.
Since ils inceplKJn ZCT has provtded £1(M) million of supwrt lo charities Ihe length and lyeadth of the
UK and oversea5. The need for the serv*ces of the UK charitable sector is as great now as it has ever
been throughout the past SO years and within ZCT. we are incredibly proud to sland ak)ngside the
charities WÈ partner wth to supp￿1 those in need of th&r seNces.
Zurich Cornmunity Trust provided in excess of £2.5 millNJn of suP￿rt to charities across the UK in 2023,
th the majority of ihe spentj twl not exclusively so. lo the three natK)nal p8rtners and 55 local partners
that were 5eleclei3 in 2022 as well as the partnership Teath First.
In addition to the planneé second year paymeni as part of in￿"al tsvo-year partnerships wlh the three
national partners and 55 local partners. Ihe Truslees decKJed lo disinvest £250.000 from reserves to
fijrther support our partners in 2023 as they helped those they support against a backdrop of the cost
of living crisis affecling Ihe UK.
As such, the expenditure of Zurich Comrtxjnity Trusl consci￿SlY exceeded its income in 2023 as it
continued to 'spend down. £1.5 million that had been accrued by the end of 2019 for a polential new
'Strategi¢ Funding Programme, that the Tnjstees deckled in February 2020 not to proceed with.
In addition to the cash donations made. ZCT continued lo develop its "More Than Monel, package ol
support that is available to its aforementioned charity partnets_ A% part of this 'hA￿e Than Mr)ney°
offering ZCT was able to make a range of apprenb"ceships available to our charty pat1ners, (xjurtesy of
the 'apprenticeship levy. p8id by Zurich UK. Feedback fvom our charity partners to the overall package
of suprx)rt made available to them has been very positive and throughout 2024 ZCT wll locA( lo develop
and promote this even further.
2023 was also the year when we saw volunteering bounce bath very strongly. The response from
Zurich UK employees lo our bi-annual 'Challenge' programme launch %WdS very well received with in
excess of 360 projects completed acmss the UK. The response to educat￿￿n-baSed volunteering
opportunities was also very ￿11 receiv8d by Zurich UK empksyees. principalty IhrcAuh ZCT's
partnership with Teach First.

Al the beginning of 2023. the Zurich Community Trusl team wrjrked with colleagues from Zurich UK and
Zurich's global foundal"on. Z Zurich Foundation, to make available to all Zurich UK employees ihe
'Benevity' platforrn. By the end of 2023. alrr¥)st40% of Zurich UK empkjyees had registered an account
ilh Benevity. from where Zurich employees are able to set up fundraising pages and also searGh for
and record volunteering hours. Due to the matching and in￿ntiveS made available by Z Zurich
Foundabon through the Benevity pL4tfom). ZCT was ab￿ to benefft from in excess of £80,000 from this
new pl3rf0rn1 in 2023. It is anti¢ipaled that this new in(une stream for ZCT ￿11 grow further in 2024
and beyond.
In May 2023. Steve Grimmett informed Truslees that he woukl be stepping down as Head of Zurich
Community Trust on 30 Awrl 2024 after 24 years worf(ing for ZCT. wth whal will by then be five years
leading the leam. The Trustees are thankfvl to Stevè for pmvhfjing 11 months, notice of his intenlion to
leave which enabled the Board of Tfustees to undertake a thorough recruitrnenl search leading to the
appointment of Laurie Deans as Head of Zurich Community Trust with effect from 1 March 2024. The
Board of Trustees would like to thank Steve Grimmett for his long Servi￿ and for restruduring and
refocusing ZCT since he took over leading the leam.
Our purposes and activities
Zurich Community Trust is a public benefft entity therefore the Trustees of ZCT C￿nSider all Charity
Commission guidance on public benefft_
ZCT has been a contribulor to the Fundrdising Regulator wa its voluntary levy since the Regulatorfs
inception and continues to do so. Fundraising from both Zurich UK eMp￿yeeS ar￿ the wder community
is undertaken by ZCT to part fund its grant making programmes. Zurich Community TI￿st ensures that
il is aware of the latest Code of Fundrai￿ng Practice and adheres to its suggested behaviours and
standards in all its lundraising.
Zurich Community Trust also has a Comp18ints Polry that cèn be found the fr￿1 page of the
ZCT'S website Whe￿ the complainant is also 8ble to download a complaints fom).
The Board is re¥k)nsible for setting the Strateg￿ direction of the charity. It delegates cÈrtain
responsibilities to Ihe Zurich Community Tnjst Trust ExerJJlive'. A significant focus of the Yrust
ExecutNe" throughout 2023 has been on three workstreams - "Employee Engagemenf.. "Data" and
"Diversily. Equity & Inclusion" wknere memtsers of the YnJstExecutNe° have worked alongs*Je members
of the ZCT team on various initialives.
Zurich UK employees are also invow in the decison making of Zurich Community Trust's charity
partners both locally and nationally. Thr(wghout 2022. the board prowded a framework for de¢iding on
the new Charity partners, whi¢* saw Zurich UK empk)yees making the decision on the three new
national charity partners ar￿ the 55 new local Charity partner5 inhlrally incepted lor two years with year-

operates independently. ZCT'S major donor is the Zurich UK business and as such has a very dose

memberships.

The local and natifMal tharity partners of Zuri¢h Community Trust abo benefrtted from additional
10°A one off payment, made to all of them in the first quarter of 2023, to support them in the face of
rising costs due to high levels of infiats.on and the UK cOst￿f-11V1n9 crisis.
In addition to ihis payment. the Trustees also agreed an addibonal, one-off fvnd of £100.000 of which
£85.000 was granted to help chanty parkners that were experienang particularty high demands on their
services or facing other signfficani challenges due to the cost*of-IMng crisis.
In all. 11 charity partners benefitted from this fund. The average grant was arca £7.727 with the majority
of the funding going to charitses dealing wilh food wverty. [￿ty, and homelessness. Three examples
were..
Cheltenham Open Door, suppjrting homeless people. re￿iVed £7.727 to help support the growing
number of visitors io their charity. The nurnber of people needing their support grew from around
30 10 80 each day.
Flourishing Families in Leeds received £10,(Th) lthbch SUPF#yled an addibonal 200-300 families in
f￿d poverty in one of Ihe most disadvantaged areas in Leeds.
Breakfast Plus, who suppcrt those experiencing food poverty in Swindon. received £5.000. This
helped support an inuease in demand due to growing number of people using Iheir service.
2023 also saw the L4unch ofzurich Community Trusvs first'sustainability Fund. for use by ZCT'S charity
partners. In addition to the suc￿Ssful launth of the new £I00.000 fund. ZCT also launched the
'Diversity. EqLJity, Inclusion, Belonging IDE181 & Sustainability. Ne￿orf( (wth 38 chanty partners signed
up by the end of 20231, the DEIB Toolkit and DEIB Audits. The DEIB Audits offer an opportunity for ZCT
partners lo ijiscuss Iheir DEIB strategy with the ZCT team and establish whether they would benefit
from some additional support. in the forni of a 'Skill-share' or aoditional training. to help further their
strategy.
Within six months of the offiL?al laun0* the £1(￿1.000 from the Sustainabilty Fund had been spent with
further funding available in eaTty 2024.
Zurich Conwnunity Trust continued lo listen to the needs of its tharity partner5 throughoLrt 2023 through
what is known as the ZCT 'Advisory Group., comprising 26 charriy partners. These 'Advisory Group.

the increasing cost of U"Mng during the year.

Zurich Community Trust's funding of £150.oc￿ per year for two years will suppcKI the continuatson and
development of the Bamardo's Education Community {BECI.
The Barnardo's Education Community IBECI leam continued to expand lis existing portfolio of
resovrces to support children and youno people's mental health needs. Additional resources included
Racial Trauma articles. Representation Matters in PositNe Mentsl Heath. Workshops, Podcasts, a
Wakelet digital CuratIL￿ platfomi, Training. Spaces for Welll)eing sessions. Refiective spaces for
Therapeulic PractilKJners, Invisibk Backpack. Some materials have also been translated into Welsh.
Ne￿rkIng to raise awareness of the BEC has become nmxe of a focus and Ihe team have presente
at several educator's events.
Since the launch of the BEC. there has been 85.634 visits to Ihe site. During 2023. the BEC provided
1531 training opportunittes for educators, through live training. pre-recorded trainiThJ. CPD accredited
courses and KKMJcasts.
The BEC team has delivered 25 INe training sessions to 448 particapants and the BEC podcast series
has been accessed by 173 listeners during this period.

In June 2022. Zurich Communty Trust was pleased to announce the continuats.on of our partnership
with Oemenlia UK.
Dementia UK have wntinued lo grow their Virlual Clirllcs Service. which ZCT has part funded. ZCT
have funded two full time equivalent nurses r15 hours perweekl for this service as well as costs towards
the management of their booking system. Virtual clinic appoinlments have increased from 60 to 90 per
week and Dementia UK look the decision lo merge their Helpline and Virtual Clini¢ Teams in the
summer to reduce vulnerabilty and share workloads more equally.
In 2023 there were 3.240 appointments made through the wrtual clinics which were covered by the two
Admiral Nurses that ZCT have funded {75 hours per weekl. One of Dementia UK'S Admiral Nurses
delivered an employee wets.nar for Zurith UK employees raising awareness of dementia and their
servu.
Following Dementia UK'S interest in Mental Heatth First Train1r￿. we arranged for a trained Mental
Health First Aider in Zurich lo deliver a N¥o4ay training Course to 16 Dementia UK employees whilst
ZCT covered the cost of rnaterials.
Magic Breakfast
Zurich Community Tnjst W8s also p￿ased to c￿ltinUe to suppon Magic Breakfast In 2023 after they
were added as a new Nati￿al Partnw in 2022.
Zurlch Communty Tnjsl's funding of £150.0(KJ w year for two years went towards the promsion of
breakfast in 15 primary and secondary schools across the UK. The funding also went towards running
costs and allvocacy work lo work towards long term thange regarding sthool breakfast provision.
In 2023. Magic B￿akfast provrded 469,057 b￿akfasts lo the 15 schools that ZCT supports. ￿th 2,381
children being directly reached.
M8gi¢ b￿akfast Saw their cA)sts go up by 19% thr(whout 2023 due to food and fvel prus increasing,
whilst at the same time demand for seNices also incwsed.
To manage this, Magic Breakfast transfomied Iheir serV￿eS by weasing school membership fees.
reviewing. and redwng the schix)& they support to ensure they aligned wrth SUPF(Jrting schools with
the greatest need and limited the order of some breakfast products.
Advocacy work towards the case for d)ange continued a￿1 ZCT was p￿aSed to brcA(er skills SLJPPOrt
from the Zurich Actuarial Team to support Magic Breakfast wth the creation of a dynamic spreadsheet
lo ¢alcu18te 8coJrate et>sb"ngs f(Y tendets in the luture.
ZCT have also been working Zurich UK Head of Workplace Services to launch a 'Donate a Magic
Breakts$l' inftiative in February 2023 to match donations by 50% made at Ihe cafe tills in Zurich's offices
in Whiteley, London, and Swndan_

of£200.000 perannum.
A new volunleeiing tsrget for this extension has been set at of employees engaged pèr year. ZCTS
partnership with Teach First wll n(M end in Marth 2026.
During the aCadern￿ year 202212023. a totsl of 50 edu￿rI0n rnitr8tNes (against a target of 201 have
taken Pla￿ in 10 locations 8en)ss the UK. These initialives have resulted in 1910 pupils d1￿ctlY re8¢hed
through these initiatives and 3500 pupils indirectly reathd where 28 Zurid) employees have been
matched with teachers to FKowde coaching during the year.
Overall. Year 10 was the most common year to part￿Ipate in the workshops wth interview skills being
the most popular. The financial literacy workshop had Ihe highesl satisfaclion S￿re with 83% saying
the session was good or very good. arKI the CV skilLs ￿hop saw 44.6°A of students bein9 more
interested in a career in insurance.
A further 50 teachers joined the Teach First training prcgramme, because of Zurich Community Trust's
funding in 2023.
Alzhelmerfs Society
As per the five-year strategy agrwj by the Board of Trustees in March 2020. Zurich Communty Trust
Continued to support Ihe"Insurance Day for Dementia- in November 2023. part of Ihe'lnsurance United
Against Dementia" movement frorn the Akheimerfs Society.
11 was agreed that Zurieh Community Tnjsfs £100.￿0 d￿alKIn in 2023 would be used as an ineentive
to match-fund donations to the Insurance Day for Dementia made by others across the insurance
iThJuslry.
The event on 30 November 2023 was the most successfvl fundraising day thus far raising in excess of
£200,000 with our funding leveraging engagement and donations from companies who have not taken
part before.

Folbwing the decision of Ihe Zurich Community Trust's Truslees in February 2023 to continue
supporting the "Superhero Series" for a further year, ZCT were delighted Ihat twelve charities agreed

relating to the impact of the progommes operaled by ZCT.

Zurich Communty Trust does not engage professional fundraisers. ZCT raises funds ffom the Zurich
UK business, its employees, key supplier emptyees and through Z Zurich Foundation matching
through the Benevity'hAy Impact. platfom) Fundraising from members of the public is limited and rnainly
occurs through sponsorship donations employees may seek when they are takw)9 part in fundraisng
events, most of which flows tt)rough online giving sites.
On occasion extemal friends and famity members of employees a￿ engaged in key fundraising events.
ILY exampSe the London Marathon rf places are not fulfilled from Zurith UK employees alone.

Pay and remuneration.
Zurich Community Trust's Remuneration Committee has delegated authority to assess and agree the
annual performance salary ranges forthose working in the ZCT team. This is reviewed every year using
a combination of an extemal volunlary sector salary survey coupled with data shared wth ZCT from the
Zurich UK'S Reward team for communty investment roles. Rdes are benchmartred to relevant dats aTh
lo each other.
The Remuneration Committee consists offour trustees, induding al lea51 one trustee independent from
Zurich. The Committee is delegated to assess arKJ agree Ihe annual performance of ZCT and lo review

ZZF Foundation.
Income from Ch8ritsbl8 Act6vths represents an￿1n1$ recervable as a result of a varrety of
fundraising events and inth"atNes induding events organisèd by Zurich group staff ancl
