BRITISH SOCIEfY FOR POPULATION STUDIES TRUSTEES, REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024 We present our report and financlal ststements for the year ended 31 December 2024, Report for 2024 l. Objectives The Britlsh Society for Population Studles Ss a society of persons who have demonstrated by thelr writings or otherwise a scientific Interest in the study of human populations, The Society's objectives are to benefit the publlc by furthering the scientific study of biologlcal, economic, hlstorical, medical, social and other problems connected with human populatlons, and to contribute to public awareness of these problems. BSPS members work In academia, loca5 and ￿ntral government, and industry and include P05tgraduate students of demography and populatlon studies. Benefits of membership include flrst-call invitatlons to BSPS and other meetlngs, a Newsletter and clrculations of time-dated materlal, a redU￿d reglstratlon fee to the annual BSPS confe￿nce (when held physically), and a redu￿d-rate personal 5ubscriptlon to the Journal, Population Studies. Members are invlted to participate In BSP5 consultations and nettNorks with academic and government research. The Society maintsin5 a website at htt www.bs .or s. It Is anticipated that BSPS, pursuit of its objertives and aim5, wlll continue its programme of occasional day meetings and annual conferences and continue to provide travel and meetlng grants to enable members to attend its events as well as relevant meetlngs organized by others. 2. Grant making policy The Society alms to use Surplus Income from the prevlous year to fund meetings, travel grants to members, bursarles to the annual conference for student members, and to fund the annual Low- and Middle-Income countrie5 inltlative. Surplus income derives principally from the previous year's annual conference, where avallable. 3. InvestmenL reserves and rlsk management policy The Society maintalns reserves to meet any future deflclts on its actlvltles, any outstanding commltments should the sC￿lety be wound up, the liablllty ensuing if the usual annual conference were to be cancelled at short notice, and the likely costs of the Secretariat Should the PIC withdraw Its support, Therefore, the trustees consider that an appropriate level of reseNe5 should cover appropriate charitable expendlture for one year. Free reseryes Stand at £138,854 at 31 December 2024, although it should be noted that £19,144 (£18,721 at 31 December 2023), Is held in COIF shares, whose value can be expected to fluctuate (original cost £io,0001. It 15 anticipated that the excess over the requlred amount wlll be expended In future years, in furtheran￿ of the Society's charitsble artlvlties. A substantial part of the Society's reserves, £59, 183 (£55,787 at 31 December 2023), are held In a COIF deposit account, which is not protected by any flnancial compensation scheme, However, the trustees believe it unlikely that the UK Government would let charities suffer the consequences of the fallure of a Charity Commisslon-approved dety)slt scheme such as COIF. It ha5 also been noted that common deposlt funds spread thelr Investments between a number of banks, so it is unllkely that all deposits would be lost In the event of a slngle bank failure, The trustees closely monitor both the COIF shares and the COIF deposlt account to protect the finances of the Society. 4. Revlew of finandal transactions The flnanclal ststements summarlse the Socletys transactlons durlng 2024. Stsff of the Populatlon Investigation CommSttee (PIC) carried out the general admSnistrative work, accounting and bookkeeping functlons, maintenance of the website, and admlnistration of the conference at cost.
