The British Swety for POpUlath￿ StudEs is a 9)iety of pErs(￿lS who have demonstrated by their wrrtiNJs

It is antits'pated that BSPS, in pursuit of its
objectives and aims, will continue Its Fycgramme of ￿ca$K)nal day meetings and annual cOnferen￿S and
contlnue to provide travd and meetityj grants to enable memtvs to attetKI Its eV￿ts as well as ￿levant
meetlrKJs organlzed by Ot￿S.
2. Grant maklng pollcy
The *ciety alm5 to use surFAus Inc(Yne frryn the year to fuTrJ meetlng5, travel grants to
memtrm, bursar*s to the annual confe￿n￿ for SttKlent memLvs. and to fvnd the annual Low- and
Middle-lncome countries inltsative, which ￿Surned In 2023. Surplus Income derives principally from the
YeVI￿S yearfs annual cOnferer￿, avaiLable, th(xyh a small defidt Is reFQrt&J In 2023 owing to
the popularity of this yearfs student bjrsary sd)tsne. As 2023 Is the Sc(ieVs Anniversary, expendltu
wa5 made on three CommemoratNe events dunrq the year, in addit￿ to ConfererKe5.
3. Investmrt relen￿$ and rl*k management pollcy
The gxiety mairtains reseNes to meet any future deficits ￿ its actiwties, any OLtstsnding commitments
should the Sc(iety be WCMJnd up, the10￿.1￿ ensuing rf the usual ann￿71 conference were to k cancelled
at sh¢)rt noti￿, and tr* likely costs of the Smtsriat should the PIC withdraw its supwrt. Therefore,
the trustees consider that an appropnate knl of resefNES shoukl cover appryriate charitable
exwditure for one year. However, as 2023 is Soc*Vs Soth Anniversary and events a￿ ptanned to
mark this, indudirrfJ an anniversary c(￿feren￿, it was ttwht prudent to maintain higher than usual
reseNes for 2023. This is to cover the eventualib.es of income not meeting the costs of the
commemoratNe events for whth h￿her than usual Wets have been alloweAJ. Reserves requir&1 are.
therefore, set at £95,OCQ for 2023.
Free reseffts stand at £118.910 at 31 tknnber 2023. it shoukl be I*￿ed that £18,ni (£17,121
at 31 Ctcember 2022), is ￿ld in COIF shares. whose value can te expected to fluctuate (original cost
£10,0(￿)). It is antiapated that the excess cNer the required am￿nt will t* eX￿ded in future years. in
furtheran￿ of the &xieVs charitsble actNities.
A stsbstsntial part of the Soo'etvs reserves, £55.787 (£52,943 at 31 D￿ernber 2022), are held In a COIF
deposit account, which is not protectal ty ary financial cthntknsation scheme. HOy￿er, the trust
believe it unlikely that the UK Govunment would let charities suffeA the Consequen￿ of the failure of a
Charity CommissK)n.approved deFOSit S(￿ such as COIF. It has also teen noted that common deposit
funds spread their investments l*tween a numtw of banks. $0 rt is unlikely that all deposits would be
lost in the event of a singse bank failure. Tr trustees ckhefy monrtor Lxjth the COIF share5 and the
COIF depwt account to protect the finan￿ of the ￿lety.
