The Management Committee is constitutionally composed of five, including the Chairman, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. Dr Matt Booker fills the fifth chair. (At least three of the management committee must be medical practitioners). The Medical Committee is effectively a sub-committee of the Management Committee and comprises those members of the Management Committee, who are also active Medical Responders – marked above*. Andy Newland also attends management committee meetings as a Trustee. Other individuals may be invited to Management Committee meetings regarding specific projects.
The current trustees are: James Hickman Andy Newland Richard Speke Ed Ford James Seddon
The officers and trustees are responsible for the proper running of the charity. According to the membership database, at the end of March 2023, SAVES membership comprised:
- 3 honorary life members
- 5 active medical members (although one currently dormant)
- 1 co-opted (ambulance service) members
- 1 lay volunteer & trustee
- 3 other medical members; 2 not actively responding, 1 responding for BASICS Dorset
- 1 other member & fundraiser
Between April 2022 and March 2023 our four, currently active, responders in Somerset responded on 117 occasions. The range of number of calls per responder was between 12 and 45, with an average of 29 calls per responder: `o` Q1: 23 calls `o` Q2: 26 calls `o` Q3: 40 calls `o` Q4: 28 calls
This is a further fall from our 143 calls in 2021-22 and 178 calls in 2020-21 and compares with our average annual activity over the previous seven years of 154 calls per year.
Calls were categorised as follows:

We remain indebted to Mr Calby for continuing to support our fundraising and PR including Social Media in addition to his work in correlating data via the

BASICS SW Toolkit. Our Facebook and Twitter feeds have 371 and 811 followers respectively
Bimonthly CPD meetings have been co-ordinated by Dr Seddon. Themes included:
- Trauma Moulages
- Thoracostomy, Traction Splinting and Case Reviews
- First On-Scene Assessments including BLS and ALS skills
- Prehospital management of acute behavioural disturbance
The meetings have become increasingly popular with colleagues from the ambulance service who have benefited from the training. In May we were honoured to be visited by the High Sheriff of Somerset who presented Diamond Jubilee Medals to SAVES Responders.
SAVES continues to hold a contract with the Somerset ICB that provides additional funding to support us to support our responders.
The charity continues to provide a valuable contribution to the Somerset Community and in support of The South Western Ambulance Service. However, we face various challenges that need consideration for the future. Last year I reported that we were awaiting further information on training requirements for blue light driving. This is still the case but it is clear that the new requirements will add a significant time financial for new responders and significant supportive funding for the charity. We currently only have a small pool of active responders and need to actively look at recruitment, resilience and “workforce planning”. At the time of writing we have two potential medical responders amongst the membership, with another serious expression of interest. In addition to the voluntary hours spent responding, all of our currently active members are also actively involved in running the charity. This is likely to be increasingly difficult to sustain and the management committee will be actively exploring potential strategies for the charity’s development.
During the year the charity purchased two Zoll Monitors with the help of a significant funding from BASICS HELP Appeal Money and donations from Tesco.
We are grateful for the continued use of Taunton Ambulance Station for meetings (when permitted) and the support of colleagues within the Ambulance Service.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the PERIOD ended 31/03/2023.
